I chose to leave my career and cash out my 401 k. I'm still working until a replacement comes here from another area to fill in my spot.
I bought a piece of un-incorporated land that I will be allowed to build on.
I bought an older 5th wheeler and am working on it to re-insulate it and get a solar hot water heater for it.
On the property, I'm installing a PV system, and Water Harvesting system as well as a Grey Water system.
Check out small houses or tiny houses on the internet. This is what I'm doing. They are small/tiny yet they have all the amenities of a big or medium sized house.
I'm having it shipped to my land and going to put it together myself.
It comes in pieces, pre-cut. Since the electrical system that would come with the package/pre-cut house was not sufficient to hold the amount of electricity I want, I am eliminating that system to install the bit more expensive $24,000 PV system. I will also add a small sized Gas Generator. The Grey water systems turn water, not black water, into usable furtilizer.
You can find tons on information on the web about pre-cut tiny small houses, kit houses, pre-fabs though I would not suggest those, stick with the pre-cut one's that are small or tiny. Get a piece of land, outside a small community, with water rights on it or water like a running stream or creek on it. Check to see if you will be able to put your tiny housing with the Zoning Ordinances and County Codes, like CC&R's. If it says NO CC&R's it means homes like Manufactured are NOT OK.. If it says, CC&R's OK, you can proceed. Also it means Cobb houses, that are made out of your own soil can be built. And check out Cobb houses, they can be very nice to very basic. Depends how far you want to go with a Cobb.
Figure where you will drill for a Well. Old lots where there used to be a house and is no-more probably still have a Well, check how many gallons it will hold. Consider a small older fixer-upper, take out the old electric system OR add a Solar panel every time you cash something out.
Check out Yurts. They don't cost much.
I don't trust a single Bank or Savings program. I think the government is not only going to Grab Guns, but they will grab money. If It's not buried in my earth, it's not going to be there much longer.
Get back, way way back to the basics. We will have to eventually anyways. The more independent you become for Utilities and Water, and ability to store root foods and canned goods, grown your own, bake your own bread in a Cobb oven the better chance at survival you will have.
There are certainly many people doing just this. I'm actually coming in late on this. I'm not on any commune either. I don't want neighbors, had enough of neighbors sitting on porches and collecting my tax dollars.
There won't be checks coming into them, they will go ape when that happens.
Expect squatters, home invasions. Robberies. I don't need to spell it all out. Get away from LARGE even Medium Cities as fast as possible.
Cash out. If you have to. Quit working, and take out all you have and sell off, or walk away, it won't matter much in awhile.
Get off the blip radar. I remember reading once about something called, the 'Back to the Land' movement. I'm not a hippie. More a farming type working class person. I can remember my great uncle and aunt that were farmers and builders so I learned a few things from them.
Draw on those things. Get back to the land, off the Grid.
You can make it. Just start writing out a plan of action to leave the system.
Many areas will be designated for Wind Turbines. Check out the companies that put them up and offer your land to have these Wind Turbines put on the land and you will get a check as long as there is any money to get. BUT, best part is you will get your electricity for free and can accomidate people around you too.
