Event: Money as Debt: Ashland Library Film Series

Date: Thursday Jan 27th at 7pm (& Drinks at Stones Public House Afterward!)

Location: Ashland Public Library 66 Front Street Ashland, MA 01721
About:

Produced before the bailouts of the past several months, which now approach $8 trillion dollars according to Bloomberg, Money as Debt wants us to think about our monetary system.
Where does money come from? Where does that $8 trillion come from? Money as Debt explains how banks create money through issuing credit.
Money as Debt poses several questions. Why does the government choose to borrow money at interest from banks when it could create all the interest-free money it needs? Why create money as debt? Why not create money that circulates permanently and doesn't have to be repaid with interest? How can a money system dependent on perpetual growth create a sustainable economy? What needs to change to allow the creation of a sustainable economy?
Money as Debt suggests banking should be a nonprofit service to society. Government would lend at no interest for projects that create value not debt, such as public infrastructure projects.
Money as Debt makes it points clearly supported by well-done animations. It quotes Goethe, Woodrow Wilson, John Adams, James Garfield and many others. Money as Debt is an interesting introductory critique of the current monetary system which, like all human institutions, exists because of past and present conscious decisions and choices. It can be changed by the same means.
