To all you liberty-loving, original-thinking dailypaulers - I salute you!

The Killers latest song "Human" was inspired by the Hunter S. Thompson quote that 'America was raising a generation of dancers.' But what exactly did he mean??! Was he saying literally that people were dancing and avoiding bigger problems in life? Is 'dancer' a euphemism for something else?

Hunter S. Thompson meant that the US (and the world at large) was making people afraid of stepping out of place and following their own beat. He was saying that people were only following the steps they were taught, and were also taught not to change them. In the song "Human" one of the lines is "Some times I get nervous when I see an open door". By this he meant that he is afraid to take different opportunities when they are presented to him, because living in the US has made us all afraid to go against what we've thought for all our lives.

By ''Dancer'' he means ''puppets''. Because thats how the world has become. We are all just puppets, like dancers. Thats why he says in the song ''cut the cord'' this vision comes from Hunter S. Thompson who once said that America was raising a generation of dancers.

Lyrics below:

I did my best to notice
when the call came down the line
up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind
and sometimes I get nervous
when I see an open door

close your eyes, clear your heart

cut the cord
are we human or are we dancer
my sign is vital, my hands are cold
and I'm on my knees looking for the answer
are we human or are we dancer

pay my respects to grace and virtue
send my condolences to good
give my regards to soul and romance
they always did the best they could
and so long to devotion,
you taught me everything I know
wave good bye, wish me well

you gotta let me go
are we human or are we dancer
my sign is vital, my hands are cold
and I'm on my knees looking for the answer
are we human or are we dancer

will your system be all right
when you dream of home tonight
there is no message we're receiving
let me know is your heart still beating

are we human or are we dancer
my sign is vital, my hands are cold
and I'm on my knees looking for the answer

you've gotta let me know
are we human or are we dancer
my sign is vital, my hands are cold
and I'm on my knees looking for the answer
are we human
or are we dancer

are we human or are we dancer

are we human or are we dancer.

Nice Lyrics... but

Too bad the musical composition and musicianship are mediocre, at best. Basically it's just typical run-of-the-mill Wimp-Rock.
But I applaud their efforts to make a statement.

Beware of false flags.

Here is a clip from the movie "Southland Tales" featuring another Killers song.

I was disappointed with the movie itself, though it was a noble attempt. The guy who made it, who also made Donnie Darko, tried to tell the story of the Apocalypse through pop culture. The cast was great for the topic (big pop culture names, Justin Timberlake is in the clip) and some of the ideas were very good (false flag attacks, soldiers running drugs, evil people playing both sides, surveillance grids and snipers returning from Iraq over the streets) but poor interpretations of scripture brought it down. Ultimately it was too much for the film maker to handle and the film spun out of control. That said, still worth renting if only to see it.

The symbolic implications of

The symbolic implications of this song are perfectly relevant for our present scenario and state of mind in America as a whole. We are faced with the largest problems our country has seen since the beginning of the last century or later and we sit at home wining about the problems and waiting for a politician to save us.

The reality of the situation is that we can only save ourselves. We need to unplug from our world of consumerism, reality television and waging a glamour war against the Jones' and start working hard to bring america back to what it was. It use to be the greatest nation on earth, built from hard work, sweat and blood. Today the population thinks it can sit around and be lazy to the same end result.

I guess they were proven wrong. Welcome to America the crumbling. Are you human or dancers?

I have always loved David Byrne and saw that clip, but not the movie, once before.

It's amazing.

amazing song

great interpretation

great post

& analysis

i was actually curious to what the songwriter meant

Great post but song not so great.

the Killers have fantastic hooks, but this song is a little annoying. This is going to sound stupid, but the chorus has a jarring grammatical effect to it, and it makes the song disappointing.

"are we human or are we dancer"

It could be a fun song to sing, but that "dancer" should be plural. Am I a dick for thinking this?

#$#We need to build political strength and political wil^&^&.

We need to build political strength and political will.

Human/Dancer not Humans/Dancers

It's an Adjective in this context, not a noun.... but a dancer person wouldn't notice that ;-)

Well ... That's The 'Popular' Opinion

Think about it .......

Ohhhhh The Humanity ......

***

We each can develop personal courage and individual, free, indomitable Will.

maybe it's gramatically incorrect on purpose?

to draw attention to the line?
It made me curious and I looked up the supposed meaning (if any) of the song - whereas as if it had been gramatically correct - i would have just said "nice enough song (maybe not one of their better ones)" and left it at that.

Thanks for this. I love the killers and must admit that I didn't "get it" when I first heard this. Now I understand what the "dancer" ref means. Good song!

Great post...I've been a huge fan for awhile because they are the most original band in a copycat industry...

Here’s A Telling Endorsement

Those keeping an eye on pop culture don’t ‘get it’ …

http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/09/killers-human-s.html

…it must be an anthem for us. ;-)

Some fools can’t get past the sing song refrain of the Beach Boys classic: “Help Me Rhonda…”

I loved the Killer’s new toe tapper. Thanks, Rhonda for the heads up and for your independent mind capable of discerning and appreciating.

How ironic.. the ones who "don't get it"

Think the lyrics say "denser" instead of dancer and then most don't get what the meaning of dancer is in the lyrics! ( as puppet, automatons etc..)

Nice song!

"I think we are living in a world of lies: lies that don't even know they are lies, because they are the children and grandchildren of lies." ~ Chris Floyd

thanks for that intersting link

i especially like this posters response:

"up to the platform of surrender, i was brought but i was kind"
-platform of surrender = stage wher dancers give up their individuality to look alike
- he was taken to the stage but showed kindness, an emotion rarely seen today.

"sometimes i get nervous when i see an open door."
-fear of stepping out of the box, being unique
-fear of disagreeing with society and/or views that they have been previously told to be true.

"cut the cord"
- let go of taught perspectives, and be free to discover your own.
- if we are like puppets then cut the strings controlling us and become free.

"on my knees looking for the answer"
-praying on knees to a higher being.
-asking what is our purpose.
- we have cut the cord and are now limp puppets wondering what to do now.

"Entire 2nd verse"
-Let go of devotion to other and one country just because your frightened of going against them.
( also little side note here: Tranquilize "with the Bushes and the bombs" political power)
-Grace, Virtue, Good, Soul, Romance are not enough to define our existance. Society constantly portrays the idealistic images ruining our nation.
- You cannot take societies "word for it" about the world you have to view it for yourself.
- Giving up personal individuality and emotion to become accepted by society.

"Bridge"
- Will you be able to live with yourself knowing that you have killed/;destroyed the main part of yourself?
Knowing that you have given up on your "home" ( dream of home, home is where you can be yourself and not be criticized and hcanged {usually}) WE no longer have any message (free will, drive, ambition, motivation) we conform to others views of us. And finally "is your heart still beating" means are you even still human still alive when you know you have abandoned the most important part of yourself?
