Mother Jailed on Terrorism Charges for Spanking Kids on Plane
*I have no "hope" for Obama, but I'm glad Bush is gone. Anyone that thinks Obama will be different than Bush is wrong. If he was he would get rid of laws like this on day one*
Article:
At least 200 passengers have been convicted of felonies under the Patriot Act, often for behavior involving raised voices and profanity. Some experts say airlines are misusing the law.

Reporting from Los Angeles and Oklahoma City -- Tamera Jo Freeman was on a Frontier Airlines flight to Denver in 2007 when her two children began to quarrel over the window shade and then spilled a Bloody Mary into her lap.
She spanked each of them on the thigh with three swats. It was a small incident, but one that in the heightened anxiety after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks would eventually have enormous ramifications for Freeman and her children.

Sounds to me
Like she was just a drunk idiot that someone should have sat on well before the flight.

Seats too close together is my gripe and no food (like before)
Besides, I've been on two planes that could of crashed. My first plane ride was on a DC-3 in 1960 and over Arizona lightning hit us and tore part of the tail off, we had to make an emergency landing.
!n 1976 I was fling out of Osaka, Japan to Okinawa on a All Nippon Airlines (Lockheed Tri-Star). Our engine burst into flames on take off, the pilot was able to abort the take off. The newspaper said we would of crashed if we did.
I buy flight insurance every-time I fly now, I'm sure to win the bet one of these days with my luck.
AMEX has cheap fight insurance rates. I just paid less than $50 for the wife and I... 1.5 million @
I gave up flying a couple years ago
believe me, I have been everywhere. All over Europe, Caribbean, Egypt, Israel, West Coast. If after having gone through security, carrying luggage, the taking off of the shoes ritual, and then getting to my less than adequately comfortable chair and less than clean air, yes I would be having a bloody mary. And if my son was being a nuisance to me and my surrounding pissed off passengers, he'd get a swat on the bottom too. Just a reminder to be polite, not a taking behind the woodshed. We don't do that.
I would like to know more of this story, but as it seems, totally parental.

Incident Orlando Airport Dec 10th '08
I was boarding a flight back to Chicago, I didn't notice, but the airlines gave different boarding passes to me and my wife (same row of seats next to each other) and I tried to board with her number (3) I had (4). They told me to step to the side. There was a teenager about 16 he and his mother who had been trying to board with (4) when they were calling (2). They boarded right after me, and I guess the kid gave the airline attendant who made him wait earlier some lip. The next thing I know the male airline attendant is following this kid on the boarding ramp into the plane, boisterously pissed off asking him, hey you ! Are you okay to fly with that attitude ? Needless to say the kid put his tail between his legs and sheepishly denied any wrong doing.
I have this bad luck when flying - when I recline my seat the person behind me (always a young women) begins kicking the back of my seat. I finally came up with this solution. I politely tell the young lady, "I'm reclining my seat because I have a bad stomach, and if you keep kicking the back of my seat and it comes up, I'm going to put it right in your lap and you won't have time to get out of the way." Sure enough, on a flight out of Honolulu one time I got to try it. It worked ! I can just see me now before a Federal judge telling this story if I try that again. Better yet, I just puke on her and say I'm sorry :)
boycott all you want
there were 2 million retards today in one place to greet their tyrannical messiah. Not even that many voted for our president (1.2 million or so...?) in the primaries (let's not get into the vote fraud for now).
You think that few of us boycotting airlines or starbucks will have an effect?
Only spreading our message and insulting their intelligence cna maybe slowly pave the way into something.
Other than that we are doomed.
Thanks, I will.
I will boycott airlines and I will boycott voting Republican, if Ron Paul isn't running.

-MY OPS ARE BLACKER THAN YOUR OPS-
Let me get this straight...!
Let's see... all fights or battles should be between equals and no one should have the upper hand... sounds like a sure fire way to have total and chaotic world wide conflict, and if these children were faced with that attitude, I am sure that by the time they reach the age of 'maturity' they will fit right into that scenario... as a matter of fact they have just witnessed their type of president (fraud) sworn in, and will be glad to know that they will be called up just as soon as they reach the age.
The worst thing you can do to a child is teach them that actions have no consequences, and warfare, even childish, must have consequences, lest it multiply and grow with the age of the believer, till the only thing left controlling the actions is their human nature... and that has been oh so reliable over the centuries hasn't it!
When 'spanking' safely stopped, and was replaced with either brutality or acquiescence, then the world began it's rapid decline into chaos!
Not having been on the plane or read an accurate relation of the facts, I would not venture a guess on the outcome and it's justice, except to state that if all they could charge her with was under the Patriot Act, then she was most likely a Patriot in my book!
"Suspicion is a Virtue, if in the interests of the good of the people." Patrick Henry
"We are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of Nature has placed in our power... the battle, sir, is not to the strong alone - it is to the brave..."
The very best thng that could happen
is for everyone to boycott the airline industry until they all go bankrupt.
Then point the finger and the blowback straight at the gov't.
I boycotted all airlines since they passed the stinking terrorism laws, and don't ever plan to fly again, as long as those laws exist.
I will NEVER fly on these
I will NEVER fly on these airlines as they are. Giving them money to continue abusing the people who pay their way is rather unintelligent. Let them fail. If I abused my customers like they do I'd certainly be out of business PDQ.
I gathered the following facts from the article:
"when her two children began to quarrel over the window shade and then spilled a Bloody Mary into her lap.
She spanked each of them on the thigh with three swats."
"A flight attendant confronted Freeman, who responded by hurling a few profanities and throwing what remained of a can of tomato juice on the floor"
"The incident aboard the Frontier flight ultimately led to Freeman's arrest and conviction for a federal felony defined as an act of terrorism under the Patriot Act"
1. Her misbehaving kids spilled a bloody mary onto her lap.
2. She swatted them both.
3. She talked back to a confrontational flight attendant and threw
the remains of a can of tomato juice on to the floor. (Since it
was served on an airplane, I think it's safe to assume that it was
a very small can. I'm not aware of explosive or flammable
properties being attached to tomato juice.)
Charge: She comitted an act of terrorism.
Verdict: Guilty plea entered after 3 months in jail.
Gee, I sure feel safe now. Don't fly anymore. Won't fly anymore. If this happened in a restaurant, I can't imagine she'd be charged with anything. Since it took place aboard an airplane, she becomes a terrorist in the eyes of this "law". Perhaps it would have been better to let her kids continue their activities? I wonder how close the kids were sitting to one of the emergency exits.

"If this happened in a restaurant..."
Years ago, my child and I were in a restaurant with some friends. My child was sitting next to me and was acting up.
After many, many warnings, I scooted my chair back, pulled my child across my lap and gave a few swats. Nothing harsh.
Someone came up to me shortly after that and I thought, "oh great, here we go.."
This person said, "I saw what you did to your child, and I just wanted to say...right on."
Oh, how much different that could've turned out...
Kind of misleading
she was put in jail because she yelled back at the flight attendant. She shouldn't be in jail for that. The article never says if she threatened the flight attendant or was just angry.
What I'd like to know is the flight attendent training to distinguish between "terrorism" and just a disagreement.

Sorry, couldn't resist!
The solution is simple. Don't fly. Write to the airlines and inform them that due to the high number of these sorts of incidents, you will not be flying anywhere in the foreseeable future. Travel by car. Travel by train.
When a monetary value is placed upon their stupid behavior, things change. Until then, they won't.

Hitting children is wrong.
Hitting children is wrong. It doesn't matter if you use a different word like, "spanking." Hitting is hitting. I think it should be considered child abuse and parents should be jailed for it. I don't care if two adults hit each other but a child can't fight back. That aside, arresting this woman for terrorism is wrong and the ends don't justify the means.

That's your opinion.
Spanking a child makes them think about their actions. I said spanking NOT beating. It's better to teach your child consequences of his/her actions now than let them think there are no consequences to what they do in the future. You have to be more than just a friend to your children. If I did something wrong as a child I got spanked. I expected it. Therefor, I was a pretty good kid.
i kinda agree
obviously spanking these children has not worked. they were going crazy and must have known they would get spanked for acting up but they did it anyway.
drinking alcohol and spanking children is not a good idea.
sounds like a drunk/drinking women was throwing a fit and threw some tomato juice on the floor. if she pulled this stunt at my house she would be the one getting the spanking.
terrorist no, dumb yes.

Are you serious? Child
Are you serious? Child abuser for spanking children? Yes there is a difference between spanking and hitting and from what I've seen kids who get spanked end up not doing what they were doing again, at least not in front of their parents.
Since that attitude became
Since that attitude became prevalent, children have been growing up with no discipline or respect for themselves, their parents, their teachers or anyone else. Before people learn self discipline they must first learn discipline. Before they learn self respect, they must first learn respect.
I do not advocating beating or abusing children, but a properly delivered swat on the fanny, which usually hurts the feelings more than the butt, is a solid tool to developing discipline and respect.
Pat
BOHICA!!
Pat
BOHICA!!
You are absolutely right
A tiny swat does nothing but hurt their feelings enough so that they stop the behavior and spend a moment to listen. When they can calm down and listen, they can understand their wrong actions.
I certainly do not beat or abuse. A very infrequent swat on the behind as a last resort stops them in their tracks, like WHOA, I guess I crossed the line far this time.
Look at the animal kingdom, we are far from it, but look how the animals discipline their young. It is not always a case of being polite and following rules. It is most often a case of safety. Don't cross this line, don't go that far. My son knows if he crosses the line in the driveway (where the cars are going by at 50mph) he will get a swat. So he does not cross that line.
PS Raised 3 kids, 2 in college and one in homeschool

That is one way to look at it...
Another way to look at it is that when a parent resorts to spanking for discipline, he is teaching the child that violence is OK as long you're bigger and stronger than your victim. Maybe you don't see it like that but perhaps the child does?
Or maybe you're teaching the child that "might makes right". Or it is OK to resort to violence if you have a good reason. Or maybe you're teaching the child that the world is violent, get used to it.
Want more?
Yes, I've raised one child and never resorted to spanking...
I raised 1 also.
Throughout his childhood he was spanked 3 times. We never did time out. Kids that grow up thinking that if they misbehave they will get a time out or in school get a little detention don't understand reality. Then they get out in the work place and find out that if they "misbehave" at work there is no timeout. Instead they get fired. What a shock!!! Reality is kids and adults alike need to know that they do have to be respectful and they can not do as they like all the time.
i respect your right to discipline the way you see fit.

Overzealous use of terror laws
Its very popular to enact laws to target criminals, and those criminals dont get any sympathy when their rights are violated. Its as if their rights just dont count. Thats the first step. The next step is when these laws are so open to interpretation and abuse that they trap innocents and become the new norm.
Once youve been grabbed by one of these laws you are labeled a criminal and the trust most people have with authority is such that their word is unquestionable, you must be a criminal!
The spread of the use of terror laws in domestic cases where no terrorism has taken place needs to stop. Prosecutors use these laws to obtain unreasonably harsh punishments which do not fit the crime.
This whole system has gone rampant and must be made to conform to the constitution.
The irony of naming this act 'patriot' is not lost on anyone here, but most of america swallows this garbage hook line and sinker because they blindly trust their leaders to not misuse this power.
Eventually when enough people's rights are abused by this government there will be an accounting made.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants
