A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State
It seems to be well accepted among freedom loving people that the right of the people to keep and bear Arms is a valuable right, and even the Supreme Court last year agreed that it is an individual right.
So why is the admonition in the first part of the 2nd amendment so widely ignored by the States? Here in Missouri, the State Militia was disbanded in 1887. With the huge growth in the federal government, maybe it is time for each State to institute a militia for their own protection against the federal government. If each capable person within each state became a member of a well regulated (trained) militia, swore to uphold the State and US Constitution, and was armed, perhaps the States would be more secure, both from foreign and domestic enemies, and the balance of power might shift away from the federal government back to the states where it should rightly be.
Of course there are some groups around the country that call themselves state militias, but from what I understand they are not sanctioned by the states, nor are they funded or controlled by the states, and they are small in a crisis would probably be not very effective.
The National Guard is not the State Militia. It is rather a reserve for the federal army, and would be used against the States in any dispute between the States and the federal government.

I agree
And I would join such a militia if there was one in my state =(

Well our main hope is for
Well our main hope is for enough people to rise up at some point. 2 years ago I would have scoffed and I am still skeptical that enough people will rise up and do something ( not necessarily violence either).
However with conversations I am hearing and hearing of across the country hope is rekindled. The good part is if enough people did rise up and were willing to do something meaningful there would most likely not be a need for a hot revolution.

You are very correct
This is one thing that needs to be done. State legislators and governors, are you listening? It could start as voluntary at first in order to save money since state budgets are so tight.
Didn't the Military
Commissions Act change who controlled the militias?
