Whistleblower: NSA spied on everyone.

Former National Security Agency analyst Russell Tice, who helped expose the NSA's warrantless wiretapping in December 2005, has now come forward with even more startling allegations. Tice told MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on Wednesday that the programs that spied on Americans were not only much broader than previously acknowledged but specifically targeted journalists.

"The National Security Agency had access to all Americans' communications -- faxes, phone calls, and their computer communications," Tice claimed. "It didn't matter whether you were in Kansas, in the middle of the country, and you never made foreign communications at all. They monitored all communications."

Tice further explained that "even for the NSA it's impossible to literally collect all communications. ... What was done was sort of an ability to look at the metadata ... and ferret that information to determine what communications would ultimately be collected."

According to Tice, in addition to this "low-tech, dragnet" approach, the NSA also had the ability to hone in on specific groups, and that was the aspect he himself was involved with. However, even within the NSA there was a cover story meant to prevent people like Tice from realizing what they were doing.

"In one of the operations that I was in, we looked at organizations, just supposedly so that we would not target them," Tice told Olbermann. "What I was finding out, though, is that the collection on those organizations was 24/7 and 365 days a year -- and it made no sense. ... I started to investigate that. That's about the time when they came after me to fire me."

When Olbermann pressed him for specifics, Tice offered, "An organization that was collected on were US news organizations and reporters and journalists."

"To what purpose?" Olbermann asked. "I mean, is there a file somewhere full of every email sent by all the reporters at the New York Times? Is there a recording somewhere of every conversation I had with my little nephew in upstate New York?"

Tice did not answer directly, but simply stated, "If it was involved in this specific avenue of collection, it would be everything." He added, however, that he had no idea what was ultimately done with the information, except that he was sure it "was digitized and put on databases somewhere."

You should quit your job and help us.

Well we all new this to be the case. Our own countrymen spying on it's own people. Most likely everyone in this room at least once. It is a sad day when you really know the truth about the country we once knew as America is a pure scam. What did the NSA do with all those tapes of the people critical of the way this nation is going?. On a database perhaps?. A secret list maybe?. Did anyone keep tabs on what our own elected officials were up too?. Well guess what NSA a lot of Americans are unhappy with the way things are going and Im sure everyone has said something in anger at our elected officials. So What?. You should be so happy to have people that care so much. We live in America O.K. NSA. Not China. If you guy's want to spy on innocent people Im sure you can find a job with them . You guy's took an oath remember?. There I said it Man I feel better!!.

If journalists were having all their communications monitored, it gets me wondering how many journalists had secrets (eg affairs) that got back to Karl Rove. It might explain a lot.

Thanks

Did not pop up when I submitted...ooops Because I linked right to the video....that is why.

Rod Blagojevich & Eliot Spitzer

I've suspected that they have been recording all calls and communications of high profile people for a long time. If these people get out of line all that needs to be done is a search of their communications till you find some dirt and then crucify them with it. ie. Rod Blagojevich & Eliot Spitzer

The "whistle blowing" had the effect that was desired. What good are the communications if you can't use them in court? Once the whistle was blown on the spying it was made an issue that needed to be confronted and legitimized.

Presto, order out of chaos in action.

Spitzer was investigating Larry Silverstein

Blogovich was fighting the Bank of America.

Whistleblower: Bush's NSA spied on EVERYONE

With video: Rampant spying, especially targeting of journalists. The NSA had access to ALL YOUR COMMUNICATIONS, regardless of who you were or whether or not you were communicating internationally.

I sent the article to a few on my list

and purposely sent it to my neocon neighbor. We get into shouting matches all the time. Anyway, check out his response below. Luckily he's the only person I know who thinks on such a shallow level.

Your comment sounds very troll like...

"Human beings with love and compassion are some of the most beautiful creatures in the universe... Those without are a plague on us all."

I have a friend...

who works for the NSA. He told me that they keep a record of every phone call that originates or terminates in the US. That is, they know the place of origin and the terminal location. They are not keeping a transcript/recording of all calls, simply because they do not have the storage capability to do so. But my friend feels that it will only be a matter of time, and then every phone communication will be recorded.

Technically

The raw volume of data this represents would be mind boggling. It is a lot easier to look through the data communications than voice but even the best computer professionals in the world would have trouble handling this amount of information and I'm not sure why they would work for government when much bigger profits are to be had in the private sector, at least for now. Archiving it is a whole other story. Just a snapshot of the data for a single day might take several years to go through. Unless they're not holding the data and simply looking for red flags which would mean they are really just looking at 1% of what's out there. The scary part is they are funding and researching the ability to actually look at all of it in detail, and one day soon processor power and storage will allow for it.

Thanks for posting since this is good for everyone to see.

This should be old news to "conspiracy theorists". The NSA have been monitoring U.S. citizens for decades. This did not start on 9/11, as many people have asserted here on the DP. Look into Echelon. I will post a couple links below. This has rarely, if ever been mentioned by "conspiracy theorists" on DP. I posted the information in a thread a long time ago. This ignorance of NSA surveillance leads me to believe the vast majority of "conspiracy theorists" on DP became one after 9/11. Otherwise, if you were a "conspiracy theorist" back in the 90's, like myself, you would know this information. I would like to add that they are not only specifically targeting journalists like they talked about in the article above, they are even targeting people right here at DP. You will end up on the list if you are a outspoken critic of the government and their policies. I am just letting you know for your own good.

http://www.fas.org/irp/program/process/echelon.htm

"ECHELON is a term associated with a global network of computers that automatically search through millions of intercepted messages for pre-programmed keywords or fax, telex and e-mail addresses. Every word of every message in the frequencies and channels selected at a station is automatically searched. The processors in the network are known as the ECHELON Dictionaries. ECHELON connects all these computers and allows the individual stations to function as distributed elements an integrated system. An ECHELON station's Dictionary contains not only its parent agency's chosen keywords, but also lists for each of the other four agencies in the UKUSA system [NSA, GCHQ, DSD, GCSB and CSE]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECHELON

"ECHELON is a name used in global media and in popular culture to describe a signals intelligence (SIGINT) collection and analysis network operated on behalf of the five signatory states to the UK-USA Security Agreement (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, known as AUSCANZUKUS).[1] It has also been described only as the software system which controls the download and dissemination of the intercept of commercial satellite trunk communications.[2]
The system has been reported in a number of public sources.[3] Its capabilities and political implications were investigated by a committee of the European Parliament during 2000 and 2001 with a report published in 2001,[4] and by author James Bamford in his books on the National Security Agency of the United States.[2]
In its report, the European Parliament states that the term ECHELON is used in a number of contexts, but that the evidence presented indicates that it was the name for a signals intelligence collection system. The report concludes that, on the basis of information presented, ECHELON was capable of interception and content inspection of telephone calls, fax, e-mail and other data traffic globally through the interception of communication bearers including satellite transmission, public switched telephone networks and microwave links. The committee further concluded that "the technical capabilities of the system are probably not nearly as extensive as some sections of the media had assumed".[4]
Bamford describes the system as the software controlling the collection and distribution of civilian telecommunications traffic conveyed using communication satellites, with the collection being undertaken by groundstations located in the footprint of the downlink leg."
