Fascinating article from the latest issue of Wired magazine on "seasteading." It even has a (very) brief mention of Dr. Paul towards the end.

Snip:

Anyone can build a game-changing social-network platform or a virtual community or a set of open APIs. But the people here want to start a nonmetaphorical revolution by creating their own independent nations. In the middle of the ocean. On prefab floating platforms...

Friedman and his followers are not the first band of wide-eyed dreamers to want to build floating utopias. For decades, an assortment of romantics and whack jobs have fantasized about fleeing the oppressive strictures of modern government and creating a laissez-faire society on the high seas. Over the decades, they've tried everything from fortified sandbars to mammoth cruise ships. Nearly all have been disasters. But the would-be nation builders assembled here are not intimidated by that record of failure. After all, their plans are inspired by the ethos of the modern tech industry, where grand quixotic visions are as common as BlackBerrys, and they see their task not as a holy mission but as something like a startup. A couple of software engineers came up with an innovative concept, then outsourced it to a community and let the wisdom of the crowd improve on it. They scored financing from a top-tier venture capitalist and assembled a board of directors. They will be transparent, blogging their progress. If they fail—which, let's face it, is the most likely outcome—they will do so quickly, in time-honored Valley fashion. But if they succeed, they have one hell of an exit strategy.

Can't be beat for creative innovation towards freedom.

At least Patri knows what he's up against; I hope they succeed wildly and inspire even more new ideas outside the existing box.

Something sounds a little fishy here ;)

I say good luck and god-speed with that.

without real industry it is doomed to failure.

Why did people colonize america? Some of it was because of persicution, but mostly it was because they thought they could make a better life for themselves here, financially.
Australia did not take off as a colony till they found gold then they didnt have enough ships to bring people there.
take alaska or the california gold rush, or what ever else.

For this to take off they have to prove that you can make it financially before they prove anything else. Honestly people will take insane risk if they think they can get rich. And prostitution, cloning, and drugs is not the way to get rich.

The project brings an expert on-board.

In their effort to create a floating city with all of it's complex plans and alternate way of life. To do it right the first time without wasting allot of precious resources they are going to bring on-board an expert. Someone who knows the water and the details of such a futuristic world...56 year old Kevin Costner.

Kevin Costner was in the movie Water World!! right? I liked it :o)

Do you know who Patri Friedman is?

He's the son of David D. Friedman, and grandson of Milton Friedman. Kinda cool.

Gotta like those Friedman's...

Brian Doherty (from his book Radicals for Capitalism):

"Patri Friedman, grandson of Milton and son of anarcho-theorist David, is even today actively planning to launch artificial sea platform communities, which he's calling seasteds, currently hoping to start small with one in San Francisco Bay. That's the spirit of America, as John Adams never quite said: may I advocate classical-liberal limited government, so that my son may advocate anarcho-capitalism, and that my grandson may plan to build new artificial countries in the ocean." p.688

hmm... interesting, but...

I'm not sure this would be very successful.... They might be able to get the actual structure to work, but without significant natural resources/industry, I can't imagine they'd be very profitable economically.... They'd have to rely on tourism and business that was otherwise illegal in other places, in which case they're sort of limited in their possibilities....

I don't think I'd personally want to live on a floating platform at sea... for one, I can't imagine it'd be very large... plus you'd be floating in a watery desert, completely isolated.... not to mention, even with specialized technology, there's bound to be some undulating, and I'm not one for sea legs.

But perhaps most importantly, while I accept the philosophy of liberty and believe that things like drug use, prostitution, gambling, etc. should be a choice, they're also things that I think are morally wrong, and would not participate in myself...

It's one thing to live in a large country where the option is available, it's quite another to live in a community where drugs, sex, abortion, etc. are the primary sources of income/livelihood, etc. I don't care what other people do... that's their business, and as long as it's kept relatively private, or is in a society large enough that you wouldn't notice, I'm fine with it... but I don't think I'd enjoy living on a small platform lost at sea, with my neighbors the drug bar, abortion clinic, brothel, and casino....

More power to them! Why not? At the very least it will be a

fun adventure for those who are willing to give it a go.

The next reality - virtual reality. The only way to escape.

The floating nation concept?

I think it has merit--if you like "city life".
