Austin, TX

I'm Considering buying some real estate in or around Austin. I've never been there, never even been to Texas. Is this a good move?
I was looking at listings and it seemed pretty reasonable. I need a place to run to if it gets bad here. I feel Texas would be safer it's not as crowded and people are armed. I live in New York, I'm not ready to leave just yet, but I'd like to cover some bases, and get out of some dollars. Maybe I'll use it this summer.
Any advice is appreciated.

Lockhart, Texas. Small town, great bar-b-cue and reasonable..
...prices on real estate. The Californians came in and caused housing prices to go way up, but they are still reasonable compared to the rest of the country. Lockhart is about 20 miles southeast of Austin, and is about the only little town that has not tripled in size in the last 10 years. If money is not a concern (lucky you) check out Wimberly, real cool little town about 20 miles southwest of Austin, very wealthy and socially conscious group of people. Stay in central Texas, it is pretty weird but more liberal. Growing very fast and we have not been hit hard by the economic downturn (YET, knock on wood).
That whole central Texas corridor is nice.
From Hillsboro all the way down I-35 to New Braunfels and San Antonio, and all the towns on either side of the freeway.
Great living; lots of agriculture and cattle ranching. Generally near Austin, the hippies live west of I-35 and the redneck ranchers live on the east side.
The far end of the 35 corridor is full of German-Americans; the north end (where I live) is full of grain and cotton farms.

Texas is great
I grew in TX but now living in NY. Austin is a cool town, very "progressive" (whatever that means) and they have good music, I also love San Antonio and that whole are between them. You might fall in love with Texas winters. Also, if you're looking to get to a more uncrowded area, look at the Hill Country in Texas. I hear land there is cheap. It's near San Antonio/Garner State Park/Frio River (though right near them or on the river would be pricey). But it's beautiful. It will be a big change (in good and bad ways) from the northeast, though, so be prepared. South Texas, south of Corpus Christi, closer to Mexico, is very cheap with small towns and mostly flat farmland. Some folks might advise against since it's so close to Mexico if relations ever went downhill but I have lots of family there and I think it'll be fine. All in all, you don't really feel the government in TX like you do in the northeast, which is something I miss. It's just not a part of life like it is up here. Now I want to move. Thanks a lot! :)
The Lake Travis Area is the best
The Lake Travis Area is the best. You are close enough to the city in case you need to come into town and just far enough away to be away.
Also, Lake Travis is a nice place to have a boat. 270 Miles of shoreline. It is the best to live around the Lakeway area but not necessarily in Lakeway.
It also seems Texans would rather succeed from the United States over giving up their guns. Austin has a large population of Ron Paul supporters, providing for a lot of like minded individuals
We have a place on North Lake Travis. It is truly heaven.

Austin
The Hill Country in and around Austin is some beautiful country.I'm in the Northeast section of Texas, but my Grandparents used to live in Austin. A little farther south is Yorktown and New Braunfels German town settlements, as also my Grandparents were of German descent.Very nice people down that way very down to earth, good food too.
The shooting range we go to is in New Braunfels
The rangemaster is a Bavarian guy and one of the nicest you'd ever meet. The way he yells "CEASE FIRE", it feels like your in an old WWII movie.
Good people.
He talks about when WWII was going on that the Germans in New Braunfels weren't allowed to speak their native language.

Where in New Braunfels?
They are trying to get one approved for San Marcos, but it will be a while. Have been going to Seguin.
I couldn't be happier in Austin.
Even though it has quadrupled in size. I'll do my best to answer your questions.

well
I liked Austin and thought it was a beautiful city, but.....
I wouldnt consider Austin a safe place..
If things did collapse there may well be a Reconquista.

I'd shoot for Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Pacific Northwest.....
just my opinion
Good luck!!!!!!!!
I should say that I meant
I should say that I meant Austin may be a trouble spot after SHTF!!!!
I did not mean to imply that right now it is on par with Cleveland!
The police chief was on Alex Jones show today.
Alex jokingly called him Mr. FEMA camp....lol
I have to say that I was impressed by the chief and how he was willing to go on Alex's show. Alex asked him outright if he would stand up to the feds if he were ordered to put Austin under martial law. The chief answered that his main priority is the people of Austin, and the Constitution. I'm not 100% sure that I believe him but, judge for yourself. It is a good interview IMO.
I feel much better here than I think I would anywhere else. We had the largest RP meetup. We have a large amount of patriots. We ARE armed. We have lots of lakes, deer, nukes, oil, beef, and pretty women (not necessarily in that order)
