Soft Tax-Revolt - Good/Bad Idea? Max your W-4 dependents

0 votes

Hello folks,

Hey, had this idea the other day. Is it a good one or not? The govt. is wasting our dollars and I hear talk of tax revolts. So, the gears turned and I wondered what would happen if the word got out to max out your W-4 dependents declaration? I read that 9 was the max that you could take without being questioned on it. You could do more if you want, but the IRS could challenge you from what I read.

Use the following W-4 calculator to see what sort of an impact you might make and invest for yourself.

http://www.irs.gov/individuals/page/0,,id=14806,00.html

What do you think? Can you imaging the masses doing this?

Anyone else want to chime in...

If you had a large enough group of people doing it, then I

think that you could have a significant impact over a relatively short period of time. This has been done in the past. The IRS simply cracked down on employers and the effect was relatively short-lived. I'm not against the idea. The whole withholding system was supposed to be a temporary condition when it was established, but took on a life of its own. I would like to do away with the whole concept of withholding monies, to pay for a legally-dubious tax that isn't even due until April of the following year, and let people undertake the process themselves. Then, when the tax bill comes due, we'll see how many people there are who want to lower taxes when they discover that they don't have anything like the monies necessary to pay over some foolish income tax......a tax that they never should have owed in the first place. I encourage people to stop working for the man, so to speak, whenever they can and stop working for themselves.

It's a good idea, becoming

It's a good idea, becoming even more important now that states have taken to not refund excessive withholdings. Just stay within the legal limit, and remember to put the money aside, so you don't get in trouble when you eventually do have to pay.

W4 revolution

Dear sirs,

I was thrilled to see the Dr Ron Paul site for the max out W4 dependents.

Since passage of the bailout (give away) and the so-called stimulus package, I have been thinking very hard how individual taxpayers could somehow get back at the Congress. Those folks have only two things on their minds; how can I get reelected, and how can I get my salary increased.

Too many taxpayers us Federal Income Tax and State Income Tax as a savings account, letting the government use billions of dollars interest free. Somehow we who are fed up need to get the message out that folks must begin to manage their own money.

So anyway, I am 100% in favor of using the W4 to send a message, but not necessarily the max out of dependents. Do the calculation so that you own a reasonable amount of federal and state taxes. Then a second step in the W4 revolt would be to apply for a tax extension. I believe that the penalty on an individual would be rather small as compared to the effect on the government coffers. I can't imagine

Thank you Ron

I claim 5 because it is the most the state allows ....

and im a grumpy anal bastard who likes symmetry :)

9 is the max?

I've been taking 12 for the past year due to a very large mortgage interest deduction. Should wash out when I do my 2008 taxes, that's the idea. I don't owe them and they don't owe me, at least not a lot, we got royally screwed last year on capital gains.

I claim 9 most of the year

every year, and have to pay every year.

We all shoud keep our money now!

We All Pay

Most of us have to "pay" income taxes, every year, regardless of the number of exemptions. Think about it. If you make enough to live on....you probably pay income taxes. Period.
If you choose to start paying 15 months before they are due, or finish paying 6 months after the Apr "due" date (legally) is totally up to you.

"..shall not be infringed."

"..shall not be infringed."

Great Idea

Have had zero withheld from my monthly pay for two decades. Perfectly legal. I stll pay taxes, just don't pay before they are due. Paying more than is needed every month is giving the gov't an interest-free loan, starting 15 months before taxes are due. That's dumb. Bragging about a big refund is like bragging about ignorance of how the tax system works.
Here's the drill. Monthly witholding was set up in WWII as a convenience to people working on gov't projects. It's the forerunner of "monthly installment" payments. Exemptions based on the number of dependents was a ball-park estimate of taxes due next April 15th. I know the W-4 instructions used to say, "if your refund is excessive, raise the number of exemptions" in order to lower the amount taken from your monthly paycheck. I started with 25 and later lowered it to 10. My goal, zero with-held.
The ideal for most is break even or owe a small amount. If you have zero withheld, most folks will still owe taxes. The IRS rule is taxes are due Jan 1 and if you haven't already paid 90%, they begin charging penalty and interest. So be aware of that. You will have to write one "big" check at some point.
So, why do it:
-Principle: It's my money...till I send them a check
-I can spend, invest, play with all "my" money till it's actually due.
-Sends a message.....I'll pay when I'm good and ready
-Allows time to evaluate the gov't actions thru the year. What if they do something I just can't support with "my" money.
-What if they go belly up? Gonna pay a defunct entity?
-Wouldn't it be sweet to kick, owing no one but them?

Again, If you owe taxes, you will have to pay them, plus interest and penalty. So, it's not for everyone. I always pay all my taxes....just not starting Jan 1 of the previous tax year. Give it a try and see if it works for you. And remember you can send in a partial payment by Apr 15, along with the automatic extension form, that gives you till 15 Oct to finish paying up. Of course, in Nov, they'll send you a bill for the penalty and interest, but hey, you've taken almost two years to pay off the tax, while most others are giving the gov't a 15 month advance, no interest loan. hehehe
If you gotta pay em, might as well make em wait and have to nearly beat it outta ya?
I am NOT a tax advisor and you must do your own research and make your own decisions. And, again, I pay all my taxes, always.
To answer the question: It may have some effect on the gov't, though not much. The gov't is not dependent on individual tax receipts to function. It more of a poke in the eye...principle thing for some.
But it is still a protest and it's completely legal.

What is this?

What does this have to do with the topic?

a list of

dependents.

That's funny...

Now I understand... my list of dependents. Sweet! Actually, not so sweet... It's time they get kicked out of the house.

Hmm

Interesting... and it's NOT a lie!

i claimed 7 exemptions

and pay $0.00 in income taxes. of course, i first did it so i would be able to afford to live!! upon further thought, if i give a criminal money to break the law with, i go to jail for aiding and abbeting. so how can i legally pay taxes?! think about it.

put federal exempt on ur w2

they will take no money out for federal.put the money on the side.put it in a checking account with interest or buy gold and silver.at the end of the year ur gonna owe but at least u had your salary when you needed it .u can invest it or save it but its better to have control. hey if you grow a pair dont send any thing in. just like obamas man geither. tax revolt soon.this year i hope

Beware

Not paying taxes that are due, can be risky.
"..shall not be infringed."

"..shall not be infringed."

You'd be lying.

It's one thing for the system to lie to us....it's another to lie to the govt. If they challenge you on it.....and you know darn well they will.....then be prepared to pay the penalty for a fraudulent tax return.

It's not lying...

It's playing within the rules.

Correct

Says so right on the form. Adjust with-holdings as needed to "not" get a big "refund." Of course, if you get money back from the irs, it's not really a "refund" it's your money being paid back to you because you overpaid the tax. The gov't gets to use your money, for over a year, and pay zero interest for it. What a deal. And they never even say thanks for the loan...chump.

"..shall not be infringed."

"..shall not be infringed."

Another thought to add to this ...

One of the solutions CA has to use to overcome it's budget woes is to not pay residents the income tax refunds they have coming back to them. If we claim 9 dependents, it will ensure that we won't be screwed out of tax refunds ... since we'll most likely have to be paying taxes, not receiving refunds after our taxes are figured.

California is screwed ...
