'Green' bulbs must replace incandescent by 2012 but look what the alternative is!!!!
Submitted by Anisha on Sat, 01/24/2009 - 13:34Everyone, please be aware of these bulbs. Do not use these. Write your state Attorney general to complain and demand investigation into this.

And I've read about them exploding on occasion...
And spraying their contents all over - mercury and all.
Very rare I believe.
But very bad when it happens.
Apparently with cheap brands and near the end of their life.

I'm tempted to start a small operation manufacturing
incandescent light bulbs in my home in 2012 and selling them, just to mount a challenge. Would they have the gall to arrest a private person doing this? This would get in the news and cause the regulators a lot of negative publicity.

I don't see anything wrong with these
Don't you guys want to support doctors and pharmaceutical companies? Let's all get sick and get this economy going. Do your patriotic duty and light up your house with these cuties.
These bulbs give me eye fatigue
I've noticed incandescent bulbs give me eye fatigue. My eyes get red rimmed and painful if I spend too much time around them.
I don't know if my and others experiences are real or imagined, but that's not really the point. The point is that we should all have the freedom to decide what we want to use, not some government idiot.

Did you mean fluorescent
bulbs give you eye fatigue? Incandescent are the traditional bulbs. I too believe it's beside the point. I am a free agent under the Constitution, to buy and use any any light bulb I choose. Gov't makes these mandates illegally.
yep
Brain fart. I meant fluorescent.

These bulbs
don't exactly have a lot of power to them anyway. They have no real commercial use. My company sells LED lights and they seem to be much better than them and more heavily favored. I'm sure that green bulbs will become law it certain cities though. It's inevitable.
What's the name of the company
and do they sell replacement LED bulbs for home use?

My company is a distributor of eco-story.com LED lights to New York. Give them a call and find out if there is a distributor in your area. Or you can order replacements from http://www.ledlighting1.com/index.php?gclid=CJ3Jv72xrZgCFQET...
It's important that we all remember:
I think we all get wrapped up in the idea of some major conspiracy and miss where the government is actually abusing power - by making efficiency standards mandatory for producers.
"Green" bulbs aren't only these CFL's that everyone is up in arms about. There is no 'ban' on incandescents per se - rather a raising of the bar on efficiency. THIS type of government intervention is what we should all be pissed about. The government isn't forcing anyone to buy these mercury filled, alleged headache causing CFLs. Plenty of other alternatives will be possible. Halogens, diodes, etc...GE is already working on a much more efficient incandescent.
Just sent an e-mail message, with a link to this video…

All the technological wonders still amaze me!

LED!
I'm sure glad they gave credit to LED lights--those have always been the way to go anyway.

THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for posting this. I've been telling everyone about these bulbs from the beginning. Just the mercury content is enough not to use them in case they break. Who wants a lightbulb that if it breaks you have to have environmental cleanup? WTF?
environmental cleanup?
nah...you just have to follow some simple steps and have some items like plastic ziplock bags handy.
Go ahead at your own peril. Do you understand
symptoms of mercury poisoning and what it does to you???? Do some research and find out for yourself.
Having such a cavalier attitude for the public good gets you exactly what we have now.
Here's some links for starters:

considering i've spent...
around three years working with environmental specialists and often within waste management facilities, yes, I am well aware of the risks involved.
The point of my reply was that no - you won't need to call in HAZMAT to clean up your broken bulb, you will just need to follow the proper directions of the product you purchase.
who will take these steps of disposal ?
20%,10% ? nah...my guess is that about 98% of the population will toss em' in the round file.
Thank you Metal for having the patience to answer
such cavalier thoughtlessness. Some people......
...
Ok, so let's assume only 2% of people do actually dispose of them properly...
...What's your point? Should we ban the sale of CFL's because only 2% of those who consume the product care to read it's warning label and proper disposal methods? Give me a break.
You sure seem ready and willing to restrict the freedoms of individuals (in this case, one's freedom to buy a product and use it safely and as intended) because some might abuse that freedom with ignorance.
So who, pray tell, is actually the one exibiting 'cavalier thoughtlessness' here?
no kidding, eh?!! lol!
no kidding, eh?!! lol!
Compact Fluorescent bulbs
are already on their way out.
They are not all that great, don't last as long as they claim, most people don't prefer the light that they give, and they have mercury in them.
LED bulbs are already making big strides in brightness and can have much longer lifetimes than CFL, if they are made decently. Some are crap, but there are good ones.
Cost will be coming down, as they see more penetration into the market.
LEDs have already pretty much killed the incandescent flashlight market, and they will soon be in car headlights, and they WILL take over the general lighting industry.
The advancement curve speed for LEDs is almost as fast as computers. They make better ones every year, brighter and longer lasting, and with less power usage.
By 2012, LEDs will rule the lighting industry, and there won't even be a mention of compact fluorescents. They will be ancient history.
Irrelevant
The point is not which is better, the point is that the free markets (i.e. us consumers) should be able to decide what is best for us. I rankle at some government bozo telling me what I can and can not use in my own home.

Government
Government should not be mandating what lightbulbs we use, I could care less about the side effects. That is a personal decision. What's next requiring a gas stove? Requiring appliances newer than 3 years old? Wake up.
