Fooled by globalization
http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/542.html
A sobering discussion on the nature of the current economic crisis and why this one may be very different from ones in the past.
The problem: globalization adds exponentially to the complexity of potential outcomes, but the banking system is not designed to absorb the kind of rapid and massive changes globalization makes possible.
These aren't two hippies railing against the system. This is one of most insightful mathematicians and one of the most accomplished options traders of our time.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”
Now that is an interesting comment!
How many years from planting to production for an orchard? And how long could one live off of fruit alone?

In all seriousness !
I don't see doom and gloom here in Chicago !
Not to rain on this "the sky is falling parade " but I went to Costco yesterday in Oakbrook, IL around 3 PM and the parking lot was filled to capacity. People could not spend enough money.
A young Hispanic couple with two Jeep vehicles just bought the house across the street from me that the previous owner abandoned who was underwater big-time. The latter, Hispanics also, both with good jobs and working, let it go in to foreclosure because they just paid too much.
My son started calling plumbers in Roselle, IL for a water heater repair this past Saturday morning and all the plumbers told him that they were busy until Monday morning. The truth is, these plumbers have so much work, they don't have to work weekends.
I'm getting the impression that everyone posting here lives in depressed areas. Get out of Detroit, Ohio, the rock you live under or parallel universe you are in, and come to Chicago. If you are willing to work and can't find a job in Chicago, then I'll agree things are bad.
Not to name names, but I have noticed from my previous RP meet-up, Arlington Heights, IL and here, a lot of Paulites don't have anything and the way they talk, will never have anything. This scenario the country is going to hell in a Mack truck mimics them, not reality.
My two cents.
God speed what ever you think is right for you -
Maybe all those people at Costco are....
AWAKE!!! Maybe they have been listening to Alex Jones and Peter Schiff! They are buying their years worth of food and supplies. I am putting a diiferent spin of exactly the same thing that you saw. Plumbers are always busy, so what your son experienced is typical all over. I believe that you would certainly agree that there is no harm in: "preparing for the worst while still hoping for the best."

everyone buys at cosco
everyone buys at cosco because you get more for your $...
My wife and I do the same! plumbing is a good profession to be in right now.. but my brothers hots water heater went out and he replaced it himself becuase he wasn't going to pay the high cost. he saved about 500.00!

Actually
In Chicago there is so much competition prices are high at Costco. I can buy staples a hell of a lot cheaper a lot closer than Costco. In fact I drive right past a close Sam's Club (member) to Costco for specialty items on sale (coupon).
I've changed all the water heaters in the last 38 years myself in this house, they are not that hard to do.
My son says there isn't anything I can't do. Take that with a grain of salt, I cannot, not die.
BTW, I was walking my son though fixing his own hot water heater on the phone, until we found out we can't get a left-hand threaded thermocouple. The water tank is only one and a half years old and Whirlpool is Fed-X the part to him tomorrow, so said, the guy from India (Whirlpools toll-free number).
check the ECO,
before replacing the thermocouple, [external cut-off] it is a bimetal disc positioned to sense roll out.
I am not a plumber or an electrician. niether of those will go near my machines. [more than once anyhow] I am a very popular, self-employed, commercial refrigeration service technician.
I hope everyone here weathers this storm. I hope all the socialists get what they deserve. me? I will be just fine. I am NOT a socialist.
" the important thing is to never stop questioning, curiousity, has it's own reason for existing..

The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the fabricator and impossible for the serviceman.
HVACTech You are right -
My son got the hot water tank thermocouple kit from Whirlpool today and unlike the old thermocouple - it has the external cut-off (ECO) like you said.
Thanks.
Unless things have changed (I doubt)
Standard domestic hot water tanks heaters do not have a roll out thermal cut-off. Just the old plain-Jane thermocouple.
I tried commercial refrigeration and heating and air conditioning. I found domestic refrigerators far more easy to collect ($), fast and easier. I had an associate in the early '80's that did only washer-driers and stoves that was doing 90K.
I was an industrial control maintenance electrician, Coyne Electrical and Devry graduate. When I went to junior college for HVAC they tried recruiting me to teach HVAC electricity.
Actually
I doubt the people at the Costco Oakbrook store ever heard of Ron Paul, much less Alex Jones and Peter Schiff. If you seen what they were buying, you would think they were living for today and not fretting about tomorrow.
I know everyone can't be a plumber. I was an electrician for fifteen years and when I was thinking about starting my own business, my smart-ass sewer plumber brother-in-law teased me saying, "when a customer can't flush his toilet, he needs me [plumber] right now, not an electrician because the light doesn't work, he will use a flashlight before he pays you a couple hundred dollars to come out." He use to tell everybody with a big grin on his face when asked how his business was, "Shitty!" He died at 45 rodding a toilet out. I became a appliance repair entrepreneur, people need their refrigerators, stoves, washer and driers just as bad as their toilet need to flush.
One of my customers in Schiller Park, IL, a union electrician, had to go to Colorado to find work during a recession.
Side note: True story, a very successful plumber in the area wanted to charge a customer $300 for a simple hook up of his dishwasher. The customer told him, "you must of misunderstood me, I just wanted you to hook it up, not buy a new one." The customer refused to pay his $75 service call charge and told all his neighbors up and down the street never to call this plumber. You know what, that plumber could care less, because his business was very shitty [sic].
What I'm trying to say, for those who are capable, try to work for yourself in a field where you are always needed. Most successful entrepreneurs even take it one step further, they have their children become professionals, e.g. doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants, etc. (recession proof).
Again, if it was easy, everyone would be off their computers and doing it.
I know.. Costco people generally are into themselves. I was
hoping for change, but knew what your reply would be. Bring on those deluxe pool tables, expensive pieces of furniture, and custom carved coffins all made in China.
FYI
I do not own a deluxe pool table, expensive pieces of furniture, and plan on getting custom carved coffin made in China, I'm having the wife cremate me and flush me down the toilet. When you are dead you are dead, nobody after fifty-years will even know who we were. Why the fuss of a coffin ?
Here is what I bought at Costco yesterday: Kirkland TP, Canadian ocean perch, flank steak, chocolate truffles, bananas, AAA batteries, and English cucumbers. As you see I'm really into myself. I went for the truffles basically, for the wifes chocolate craving. Turns out she likes the light ones from Sam's not the healthy 60% cocoa from Costco and wants me to bring them back. I try to time it so I can eat as much free food samples as I can get away with. Getting ready for the coming food shortages everyone here is worried about...
ahh Richard you are right..
ahh Richard you are right.. appliance repair is good! I know a guy in a small town who does that and does very well!

You wouldn't believe
how well you can do in a big town.
When I was in business, one of my competitors was spending $27,000 a month on Yellow pages. I was a little more than a 10th of that. He lives in Deerfield, IL. Built in swimming pool in his home. I worked for him a week in the beginning. When you look into his eyes they look like this $$, yes, he is a Jew. Something mystical about chosen people compared to poor gentiles. Hmmm ?
You're incredibly arrogant
Just because you happen to be in an area that isn't suffering as much as the next, doesn't mean we all live in wastelands. Just because the parking lot is full at Costco doesn't mean the economy isn't bad...newsflash, people are spending less, MUCH less. Plumbers are busy because people are repairing their homes instead of buying new ones. Call me back when you're out of a job and looking for a new one...report back and tell me how easy it was for you to find another.

I expected a response like yours -
from a Democrat waiting for Washington to come help them, not a Ron Paul can doer.
Come to Chicago, the repair business is booming (recession).
FYI, I have been out of work since I was 53 (retired). I started a repair business in the recession of 1980 and worked 12/7/50 and retired 13 years later.
What's your excuse now ?
I never said anything about
I never said anything about expecting Washington to do anything about it, and I commend you for starting a business. I'm simply saying, don't deny what is happening widespread across the country just because you don't see it in Chicago. That is incredibly naive.
You should see what's happening to my family right now, merely 300 miles away from Chicago. Maybe then you can get on your high horse and tell me that "things aren't that bad."
You should be ashamed.

Rethink your position.

2- Mission
3- Execution
My family hails from Southern IL, no jobs, just cornfields.
Need I have to say anymore ?
Please don't
Your tripe tidbits have become tiresome.

I agree with Bonhomme and the triple tidbits seem to be fairly to the point wouldn't you say?
