House Passes 'Stimulus' 244-188

WASHINGTON (AP) - In a swift victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House approved a historically huge $819 billion stimulus bill Wednesday night, filled with new spending and tax cuts at the core of the young adminstration's revival plan for the desperately ailing economy.

The vote was 244-188.

"We don't have a moment to spare," Obama declared at the White House as congressional allies hastened to do his bidding in the face of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

The vote sent the bill to the Senate, where debate is expected to begin as early as this week on a companion measure already taking shape. Democratic leaders have pledged to have legislation ready for Obama's signature by mid-February.

Question: Why sir did you go bankrupt?

Answer: I was over-stimulated. :)

We're all saved. SAVED, I tell you!

Happy days are just around the corner.

BUT every Republican in the House voted against it.

And that's a good thing that the Republicans stuck together. And now that Dr. Paul was on CSPAN this morning and answered call-in questions brilliantly, and had time to elaborate on his views, maybe it will make a difference in the Senate vote today. At least, I'll bet the Republican senators stick together and vote "no" like they did in the House. That's important, because it means we are seeing the Republicans come together more. Dr. Paul was GREAT on CSPAN today. Surely the video will come up shortly.

Republicans not to be trusted

The Republicans voted against it and offered up something more meaningful (and which would have put more money in the pockets of taxpayers) because they knew their votes wouldn't matter and they're now concerned with repairing their image for the next set of elections. Do not be fooled by them. They know in advance where people stand and what the vote counts roughly will be. It wasn't long ago that the majority of them voted for Bush's last stimulus/bailout bill that wasn't much better than this one. I didn't see them pushing for a 5% tax cut as part of that stimulus, yet here they were introducing just such a populist proposal as part of an alternative proposal they *knew* would not be adopted.

Once again...do not be fooled by them. Vote as many of them out as possible the next go around, and support a Paulian candidate instead.

I can pretty much guarentee Alabamastan's 2 will vote no

Sessions and Shelby were very vocal in leading the charge against the last bailout.

Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.

Roll Call and the Text of HR 1

Vote is pretty much according to party line, except 11 Dems. Need to encourage all of them who voted NO.

I may have underestimated the Democrats' ability to shoot themselves in the foot. This is so bad, I'm even hearing mainstream media criticism of it.

China government runs 20% of GDP and personal saving rate is 40%, which is common in other asian economies
Most western countries run 40 to 60% of GDP and personal saving rate is below 10 or 5% (2% in USA)
Is amazing how a communist dictatorship runs a smaller government than the alledgedly champions of small government and "wild capitalism"

188 against it?

That's better than I expected. I was afraid that Ron Paul would be the sole "no" vote once again.

Nope, Bush isn't President anymore.

If the GOP was in the White House, the same bill would have passed with one dissenting vote. And they probably would have spent even more.

So they are going to...

tax us so they can give us a tax cut. Brilliant! I think the gov't just loves to see all the money flow under their noses before they chose what to do with it. They might have money sniffing syndrome, for which the treatment is to be excommunicated from the gov't!

They still think that the

They still think that the deficit is not a tax

Nice touch

"We don't have a moment to spare," said Obama. Aww, that's real considerate. You see this pork is going to be divied up so fast, so fast we're all going to bask in the glory of the rapid mercy of our benevolent bestowers of prosperity. This money must immediately be spent replacing perfecting functioning existing light bulbs with new expensive, mercury filled, foreign manufactured bulbs thus creating thousands of new jobs screwing in light bulbs. If this tonic were to be delayed for even a moment the warm glow of benefit for all would be unmercifully tardy. Only the speed and quick boldness of this daring plan will ensure its inevitable success. If some doubters spread malicious misinformation about this wonderful spending on our behalf they must be branded as fools. If they say this freshly decreed prosperity puts every man, woman, and child $7,000 further in debt it's because they're crazy. They don't understand the wisdom of time and so they're dangerous underminers of a rapid plan. A plan which must have its de facto success accurately described or the coveted wonderousness of its promises won't have their intended effect. It's the harbingers of doom whom undermine the gallant descriptions of success which have been so meticulously pre-crafted. Whooosh... that's the sound of this money helping us all. Too bad now my back hurts from screwing in light bulbs all day.

Sounds like another bad Polock (sp?) joke or ...

another Brezezinski via his messiah joke. And it's not funny! "How many Polocks does it take to screw in a light bulb??" 244 to 188!

Thanks for

rekindling the old Polish joke tradition! I thought it had become politically incorrect, and I was starting to get depressed. To draw a parallel, maybe the dems and repubs will be like the Russians and Germans of the 1940s to our Polish citizens. Ha! -signed, a Polish-American

The Rangel Rule

Watching the (r's) mopping up on the house floor on c-span right now. A rep from Texas 31st district, I believe his name is Carter, just introduced a bill to remove all threat of interest and penalty to the IRS. Named appropriately after Charlie Rangel who avoided taxes for 10 years but has since paid the tax and also was never asked or odered to pay any interest or penalty. These lawmakers feel the law should afford equal protection.

He shares the same bed with idiots like Pelosi, Fwank, Schumer, and Reid.
Rangel should be in JAIL.

this is where the oversight will be.

That's silly

Why don't they start with a proper accounting of the money they've already spent? It's a blank landing page that leads to nowhere. Hmmmm. How about a video explanation of why a proper accounting isn't need for the money already spent? Unless this is all just depravity.

Where can we read

the finalized bill in its entirety? I've seen variations of where the $ is being appropriated. I just want to have my facts down when I send my fist down my rep's throat.

did any of you really think

did any of you really think that it was not going to be passed ... retarded republicans ... they destroy the economy and then after a democrat is in office they vote no lol ...

they should be voting no .. but they arent doing it for the right reason ... they need some smacks

I heard that over $100 billion will go to education

it it goes through.

I don't care how much money you throw at government education, money ain't going to fix it. The only thing that will fix it is to kick the governement out of public education.

Dr. Paul....

spoke to that during the primaries. He advocates closing the Dept. of Education and I agree 100%.
