I never understand people with your argument. You sidestep the very core of the issue. If ending someone else's life is a "personal moral decision that one will have to live with forever..." then there can be no basis for laws against murder. Because the life of the child belongs to the child and to say otherwise is simply not logical. For those who say that the child has no life of his own until he is born, there are still questions. There is partial birth abortion, where the child is partially born, and then killed or abortions sanctioned by Obama, where the aborted child is killed after birth. Such macabre choices are the result of this dissection of when life begins. Any Dr. will tell you when life begins. It begins at conception, just ask Dr. Paul.

This is a moral decision that should be dealt by education and compassion not by rule of law. You know as well as I do that anything government touches turns to absolute $hit. We have to get away from employing the government on all moral issues like one and start exercising compassion in our community.

What's important is whether it is a conscious life. For example, should someone born without a brain, or a brain so dysfunctional that isn't capable of awareness of anything, be protected from having its life support removed? If the being is not even aware that it's alive, it's no loss to the being. Lots of thing are alive, including plants, but because they don't have consciousness we don't think of them as having rights. At the moment of conception, it's very hard to argue that the zygote has a consciousness - that it has the ability to be aware of anything. At some point consciousness does begin, but it's hard to say when. I think only when consciousness begins does it make sense to say something has a "right" to live.

With that line of reasoning anyone struck unconscious with a blow to the head is removed of his or her right to live. As as society we protect the life of the unconscious because of its potential. We know that a boxer knocked unconscious is very likely to regain consciousness. We know that life in the early stages of development is very likely to gain consciousness through brain activity (usually in the 2nd trimester).

How can we espouse a foreign policy that respects life if we cant even respect the lives of our children?

Being "struck unconscious" is not the same thing

as not having consciousness. I'm not talking about being awake or being asleep, or being knocked out versus not knocked out. "Conscious" has two meanings. If someone is asleep he's unconscious, right? That's not the meaning that I'm using. I'm using it in philosophical-psychological sense. If a person has consciousness it simply means he's aware of something. Someone knocked out, or even in a coma, may be aware of something ..aware of his own thoughts in his mind. He's has consciousness. A being that lacks consciousness is not aware of ANYTHING. And yes, if someone 's brain is so damaged that he no longer has consciousness, I don't think it makes sense to say he has a right to life. There is no "he" to have a right to life. There is just an inert body, with no concepts, no desires, no awareness of anything - a vegetable so to speak. What makes a being a person is not the mere fact of having a a body and brain but that he has consciousness.

You are speaking of the mind and in either case its potential is very relevant. I'm not so pretentious as to believe that my life has more value than a life with a greater than 99.99% chance of developing a mind. There is a much finer line with those in vegetative states who have a very small chance of recovery. Its reasonable to protect the fundamental human dignity of an individual in that state with ordinary care.
