Should we MAKE our friends take the "Red Pill"?Submitted by spacehabitats on Wed, 02/04/2009 - 16:59
"You should never try to teach calculus to a pig, it wastes your time and annoys the pig."
But even if we could, SHOULD we?
There was a rather bizarre Sci-Fi movie made in 1988 called "They Live!" in which a homeless construction worker accidentally discovered a box containing sunglasses that would let him see the aliens that had taken over the world. Without the glasses the aliens would appear to be ordinary human beings. They WERE the upper class of society. They held almost all of the positions of power and wealth; judges, mayors, CEO's. Most of the human beings were no better or worse off than they are today. They worked hard (for the aliens), payed too much in taxes, and didn't have a clue why things didn't get any better.
The protagonist became somewhat obsessed with making people put on the glasses. He even became violent at times and definitely got a lot of people angry at him before they would put them on. And once they did, most were scared and confused by what they saw.
Seeing the aliens in their true form actually put people at increased risk because it was hard for them to hide their horror and revulsion at the aliens' grotesque appearance.
Now lets talk about a movie that you probably DID see.
In "The Matrix", Neo is presented with a choice. He can take the blue pill and things will basically stay the same for him.
Or he can take the red pill and see the world as it really is.
The blue pill allows him to continue to live in his relatively safe and comfortable world.
After taking the red pill he will have his plug pulled and he will drop into the dingy world of the resistance. The food will be lousy. All of the people that he loved and respected he will now see as ignorant slaves. And what's worse, he will now be compelled to enter into a life or death struggle with sinister forces against terrible odds.
There is none so blind as he who will not see.
Maybe before we try to enlighten our friends and family, maybe we should find out if they even want to know the truth.
Maybe it would save us a lot of time, energy and hurt feelings?
What do you think?
