Why was I taught in school that FDR was one of the best President's ever?

My high school teacher absolutely adored Franklin D. Roosevelt and he taught us that his New Deal is what got us out of the Great Depression. Now I am being told that this is simply not true. I'm having a hard time believing that my high school teacher could have been wrong. Does anyone have any evidence that FDR's New Deal actually made the Great Depression last longer and deeper?
Is Obama and our Congress following the same path that FDR took?

Because when you read the history books
You are getting the Masonic version of history (not what REALLY happened). Typically, you won't even get to be in the history books unless you are part of their network of secret societies. They will always glorify their own, and suppress any infomation that might threaten the false image of virtue that they must maintain at all costs.

same thing was taught in Political Science 101 while in college. The New Deal is best thing since slice bead.
I wish I was back in high
I wish I was back in high school sometimes, just so I could challenge my history and civics teachers.... so many false facts/ideas....
Their entire critique of FDR (and this seems to go for most people) is that he saw us through WW2 and the Depression, and just because we came out of both of them alive he's been turned into a hero....
Sadly, his economic policies created the depression, and it was also thanks to him that the U.S. was even involved in WW2. Yes, Japan attacked us, but all of that, U.S. involvement, and the war itself could have been prevented....
Additionally, people don't tend to consider facts, really study an issue, or consider the unintended consequences of well-intended actions. Not to mention that he's probably been glorified even more today since most people didn't witness/remember his presidency/actions.... All they see is this figure who "protected" us in war and "led us to victory," and who helped out the common man when things got tough.... Well, when you summarize his leadership into just that of course he looks great.
Because the education
Because the education system, institutions, and foundations were hijacked or implimented in America by a group of people with a plan. And the plan didn't include producing teachers and students who are knowledgeable intellectuals but rather to produce trained monkeys.
FDR WAS a Great President
for the Communist...
"Gold in the hands of the public is an enemy of the state." Adolph Hitler
Certainly FDR felt the same way. Our Social Security system that FDR gave us? It is a carbon copy of Hitler's own. Hitler, Chruchhill, FDR, all three were well loved in the 30's. Hitler was even nominated for a Nobel Peace prize, not until he started invading the world would the very people that had worshipped him begin to spread propaganda against him. The reason that Hitler rolled right through France was not because they were such cowards and surrendered so much as it was that many of the French people welcomed Hitler and his Socialism into their country, many soldiers layed down their arms with smiles upon their faces...

People's Awareness Coalition: Deprogramming Sequence
In writing a rebuttal to Keynesian economics
I listed how the writer lacked an understanding of the New Deal. This was part of a longer Bailout article on Motley Fool:
3. Richard does not understand The New Deal.
At least in this regard, Richard is not alone. In fact, Nobel Prize winning charlatan.. er, Economist Paul Krugman has stated on several occasions that Hoover did nothing and only FDR saved us. Hooey! There is a mountain of evidence that FDR only continued Hoover's pre-New Deal. There is a mountain of evidence that FDR prolonged the depression. There is a mountain of evidence that not only did FDR worsen America economically, but he also greatly reduced American liberty, crushed the ability of the owners of wealth to protect themselves, engaged in Fascism, and provoked Japan in order to mobilize the citizenry.
If any one of these assertions can be proven true, then FDR should be regarded as a horrible President. If all of them are true, he should have been put in jail.

If you look
at our history books, they glorify all those presidents that expanded government.
Why?
Because the American Educational System was corrupted by the ideas of Dewey and every one else on up to and including William Ayers, the UN, the NGOs, etc. to promote socialism and prepare the students to be world citizens under one-world government. Period.

Say that you were drowning
I pulled you out the pond, squirted water up your nose, and poured water into your lungs with a bucket. Would that help you? Of course not.
The problem was/is debt, money that didn't really exist. So what FDR did,(in addition to introducing Kudzu to the South), was to create more debt and more money that didn't exist.
Just as I couldn't save you from drowning with more water, adding debt and more fake money can't solve the problem of debt and fake money. FDR delayed it and made it worse, just as each subsequent administration did.
Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.

FDR's New Deal created Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac
Imagine where we would be now if it wasn't for them.
Your teacher is just like 99% of teachers in public school/college -- they're nothing more than brainwashed buffoons whose jobs is to indoctrinate the youth.
There's probably a 90% chance your teach also supported Obama.
Compare US education with the world and you will see that the teacher's and the school system have worked together to FAIL America.

jzneff/zrih1: Freddie Mac is a GSE like Fannie Mae
If FDR's New Deal was stopped and there was no Fannie Mae, then the government would not have grown like it did (thus no Freddie Mac).
Government programs create more government programs -- the opponents of the New Deal knew this and tried to gut the New Deal for many, many years. Proponents have tried to restart/expand the New Deal and that's where we are today.
There are a slew of reports of teachers/teacher unions and schools supporting Obama all over the internet. Try using google.

provided some reliable evidence to back your claims.
Your answers
First, i'll answer your second question. Yes, Obama is following the spend our way out of the problem.
The reason why schools worship FDR is just a matter of who populates the front of the classroom. (I'm going to speak in generalities here, don't be offended). In general, those who can - do...and those who can't - teach.
Those who can't survive in the real world often end up teaching our children. More often than not, those people are socialist leaners. Socialists need to propegandize to survive, because it justifies their place in the world. Those who are freedom minded are often too busy producing something with their lives to propegandize.
Our schools are littered with the people who couldn't make it as engineers, as chemists, so they become math and science teachers. I'm sure there are many counterexamples of this, but in my memory not too many.
Did FDR's spending, or Obama's spending really push the depression further and longer? Probably not to a huge extent. Redistribution programs like these are akin to pulling buckets from the deep end of the swimming pool and pouring them into the shallow end. You can do this all day, but you really aren't making much of a difference.
The truth is somewhere in the middle. The overindulgence in the 1920's is what caused the depression...this much is certainly true. What made it worse were 2 foolish decisions.
1) After the 1929 crash, the federal reserve drastically tightened up the money supply. This was poor timing, should have done it in 1926. This caused a severe deflation which drove many banks under.
2) Smoot Hawley act. Faced with a deepening recession/depression...these 2 damn fools decided that it was time to protect American industry...so they pushed tarriffs on everything so high that it made every incoming good as costly as an American made one. It seemed like a good idea...but it was very short sighted because it spread our depression around the world. Now we were not importing anything, and also we weren't exporting anything.
Thus far...we have repeated the mistakes of the 1920's in 1995-2005. This is done...we are paying the price.
I have not seen a repeat of the tightening money supply in the face of a major deflation. In fact, they're probably erring on the side of printing too much in response. Trust me...inflation will seem like tinker toys compared to a massive deflation.
I'm beginning to be worried that we're going to repeat the Smoot Hawley mistake. I sincerely hope this pro-American redneck "they took our jobs" mentallity does not cause us to do something truly foolish like protectionism.
The truth of it is...the depression, like all economics, was largely psychological. People thought there was a depression, so there was. The only thing that really finally pulled us from the depression was people thought it was over after WW2 (it arguably lasted another 5 years).
That's where we are today. People are scared, so they aren't consuming. Consumption is lower, so production is lower. People then begin to get laid off in the face of decreasing demand...so more people start saving every penny they can because they're scared for their jobs. It's a psychological spiral which only really ends when people think it's over.
There are cerain aspects of the new deal that probably dragged the great depression on longer...but the real culprits are the Federal Reserve of the early 1930's and the Smoot Hawley act.
One thing is for sure though...the new deal did NOT save us from ruin.

Longtime lurker, first time
Longtime lurker, first time poster. I'm a High School Social Studies teacher and I teach US history from a Jeffersonian perspective. I've been teaching for 3 years and I'm only 24 and there are plenty of other things I could have done.
I just enjoy the fact that I get to read about history, teach, and discuss for a living! Also, other history teachers teach with the socialist perspective, so I catch some crap for the way I look at things, even though I teach the principles that this country was founded on!
I agree that most History teachers do have a Socialist bias, because that is what is taught to them in college. After college, many teachers teach with that bias, read from the same authors they read in college, etc. In fact, our standards even encourage a Socialist bias. Check this out...
"Our government was founded on the principles of fairness, equality, and respect for diversity"
and
"The Constitution is a living document that helps in defining the roles and responsibilities of government and of citizens"
These are "Enduring Understandings" that should be taught during my US1 course. Obviously, I do not follow this crap and teach my students what the founders really intended through their own words, not revisionist socialist historians words.
I'm not offended by your view, I agree with it. Many people could probably do what I do, and I accept that. However, I really enjoy my job because I would be reading and discussing history anyway, so I may as well get paid for it!
I'll correct you once
A lof of people could do what you do.
Very few people could do what you do well.
It takes a real person of courage to teach what's truly right in the face of everything that runs against this grain...and I'll forever respect someone who has the ability to gain tremendous wealth but forgoes it for something that's truly more important.
Keep up that fight...and don't be such a lurker. Don't be afraid to be wrong, that's how we learn.

Hi Slush
welcome to dailypaul. I wish I had a teacher like you in high school. Maybe I would have "woken up" 20 years earlier. Thankyou.
I guess I am a little offended..
because I have a B.S. in physics and am working on my Master's Degree just to teach high school physics and physical science....so, yes there are counterexamples.
I have to make some generalities sometimes
I'm pretty sure that just the fact that you've found your way to this forum means that you aren't a collectivist.
Be honest though...don't you find that the majority of fellow teachers are those who could not make it in the real world?
Hats off to those who truly could make a lot of money and decide to do something truly worthwhile like teaching...unfortunately, it may send you home with a better feeling of accomplishment, but also a lighter wallet.

You may be right.
Thanks for the rest of your reply in your earlier post it gives me something to look at.
There is a great little video and movie to see
The video is a of a lecture by Robert Wuhl. The topic is "History is pop culture" Very fun to watch.
The movie "Kit Kitteredge" is a kids/family movie about a family going through the great depression. Really hits home as to what may be coming.
Can you say
propaganda...?

A collectivist who achieved the goals of his masters
This man was knee deep in commies.
Just as many commie masters as Stalin.
The goal is one government and FDR'S masters used him as well as anyone to gut our system and begin the the sequence. I love the Lincoln haters screaming who he started the "large federal government."
WTF?
1910 the government was about 8% GDP...it is now almost 40%
Mission accomplished.
Tell the truth.
Unify
FDR.
It was a Republican-vs- Democrat thing.
My parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc. etc. were all Republicans and didn't like FDR or his policies at all.
They blamed him for prolonging the great depression.
Can you imagine how Americans felt when by Presidential decree only, all bank safe deposit boxes were emptied of personal Gold used as money?
They said this made already suffering poor Americans poorer, because after the confiscation act it was a federal crime to use constitutional money.
They said he became President simply because he had the last name of a very popular past President Teddy Roosevelt, and the sympathy vote { he was crippled } but my family called him a crook because of his Gold heist.
beesting
and he was! one of the
and he was! one of the biggest crooks.. the idiot tella everyone to turn their gold in and gave them 20.00 per ounce then turns around and raises the price to 35! he was a crook! and most of the rest of the idiots who have served in the house and senate learned well from him!

so you would think that
so you would think that socialism and the 'state' are wonderful! FDR was one of the worst presidents ever. He and Stalin were big buddies.. Actually one of the reasons FDR wanted to get us into WWll was to save the soviets.. Stalin could not fight a war against the Germans and quell the uprising in his homeland at the same time so FDR got the US into the war to take pressure off Stalin. Bet you never read that anywhere did you!
you can read all about that from Richard Maybury in his book the 1000 year war. www.chaostan.com Maybury is endorsed by Ron Paul. FDR also knew the Japanese were going to bomb Pearl harbor.. they broke the Jap code about 2 or 3 weeks before the attack.. FDR basically murdered 3000 American service personell to get the American people so outraged they would go to war! FDR was the worst we have had.. then Clinton, then Bush, then whoever you want next!
