I plan to use a third to help my community, friends, neighbors etc. And the other third for Victory Baskets. I am going to set up on the side of the road with a sign that says FREE VEGETABLES and hand out abasaket of a whole weeks veggie supply and tons of literature on C4L, End the Fed etc. Ron paul feeds the people! Guess what's being planted in the west
Between the Emerald Triangle and it's legal medicinal marijuana, and the State of CA saying it's going to legalize for now leading to decriminalize medical marijuana, and says it's ok to grow 10 plants, Triangle counties laws say 6... and the feds say, no more DEA to medical marijuana legal states, of which there are 11... I'm going to drive by the cannabis co -op just to see if they have any plants left for sale, betting they do not.
Here in CA we're having a gold rush, and I'm thinking this may be a good oppportunity to ask Obama for a $12K grants to cover operational costs ;))
This week a Chinese real estate agent was busting for rnting out 22 homes to grow pot at a value of $16 million.

Don't get pissy anti-garden people...
Just wanted to say I have my potatoes in the ground, raddish, carrots, bunching onions, garlic chives, basil, cilantro and oregeno are already coming up and I only planted them on the 16th. I just started "sprouting" watermelon, cantelope, garden beans, lima beans, kentucky wonder green beans, tomatoes, several sweet and hot pepper today. My greenhouse feels like 100 degrees and the sunshine feels great. I hope you all are planting something....
Happy planting!

You say you lost this thread.
I found it.lol
Try this for growing potatoes
Put a foot of rich soil in a large plastic garbage can.Cut several seed potatoes in half, lay on soil
with the eyes up and cover with a little more soil.Water and place in a sunny location. When the leaves come up add a little more soil, just enough to cover the stalk, not the leaves.Keep adding soil as they grow till
you are to the top of the garbage can.By making the roots long,
where the potatoes grow, you will get a lot more potatoes.Don't
forget to punch drain holes in the garbage can.
Have you looked into square-foot gardening?
It's really a revision of French intensive gardening. Here's a link:
http://www.squarefootgardening.com/
It gets you out of thinking of rows and into thinking of blocks. I'm looking into building a couple of 4' x 4' plots for vegies and herbs this spring. I haven't grown them in years, but when I did, I really enjoyed it.
Cool weather plants to consider from seed:
Snow or snap peas--you'll need to provide some support--twine or webbing for the plants to crawl up.
Lettuce--fresh picked lettuce from the garden is unlike anything you get in the store.
Spinach--if it gets too hot, it will bolt and get bitter
Asparagus--if you're going to be living there in 3 years, get started on asparagus. It takes 3 years to get to maturity.
In Missouri, we plant nasturtiums on St. Patrick's Day.
Just follow the planting timing directions for your zone on the back of the package.
Hey Chonk! Carrots love Tomatoes
Haven't "seen" you since our late nite "revolution" thread! I am jealous you are able to have horses..I am a horseless horsewoman and miss them terribly!
It has been so beautiful here in NC the last few days in the 70's so I have been out cleaning up my gardens..I have 3 raised bed vegetable and herb gardens and also some flower beds! Feels great to get out in the gardens!I am not planting outdoors til after easter...because we usually get a late frost!
This is a great book to have and also this site has a wealth information ..see links at side!

Wow
You guys are awsome! have I told you that lately? Well I'm tellin ya again. You guys are awesome!!!!! keep it coming. I'm going to print it all out. I'm going to get real serious about my garden and end the fed. Hopefully I won't get the census job I want. I won't be an enumerator or anything that requires much driving so they may not hire me. But hey I have a small fam to work. Right? Being self sufficient is a job right?
I quit my job in Dec so I could grow food.
I won't deny there were other reasons, but one thing that made it so great was knowing that I would have time to grow a garden. I tinkered with it last year and knew it required more time than I had left over while working a full time job. I am so happy and tan :)

I as well
I quit "work" to start a VERY small farm(6500 sq ft). This year I'll have over an acre(at multiple patriots yards). I sell to restaurants and at a farmer's market. Cash only. Best decision I've ever made. This year I'll be growing my own tobacco as well. NewHopeSeeds.com has an excellent supply of heirloom tobaccos for those who puff. Good luck in the garden.
Snow
We've still got snow on the ground in Boston.
But I can feel it in the air: Spring is on the way!
Here in Alabamatan
It was 20 degrees Friday night, and by Saturday afternoon around 75 degrees. We may get snow in April or it may be 85 at Christmas, we have 2 seasons summer and winter, and from November till April it could be ether, from May till October it is definitely summer.
One cool thing, I rent the same tiller to folks 2-3 times because they plant to early each year. The crazy weather stimulates the economy for the feed store and for me.:)
Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.

Gardening in VA
Don't know where you are but in my area, it was 72 on Sunday and I got the gardening urge. You can plant lettuce, radishes, spinach. It might be a little early for peas - if it gets and stays wet and cold, they'll rot before sprouting. Potatoes should go in on St. Patrick's Day (depending on what the Farmer's Almanac says about the moon).
Are you in Va.?
Never seen anyone on DP say they were from here.
Is this a Martfuncher Memorial!!! (lol)
We tilled this weekend, will let it sit so everything dries out and will till a second time with added topsoil and mushroom compost. I am gonna get some seeds set in my new greenhouse this week/end. I can't wait!
good luck to all and especially us newbees!

Possibly
Peas, this time of year. Peas can be planted in the fall after cold weather has set in 'n they'll start poppin' up when there ready, through the snow, some types in February.
Onions, onion "seed", possibly. Onions can be planted like the peas, takes a long season for "onion seeds".
Onion "sets" I'm pretty sure could have been planted after the weather has gone cold. Now, at this time, possibly so.
Possibly, this time of year: cauliflower, broccoli.
... ... ...
Those are probably the safest this time of year. May be others.
note: some people use peas as a "green manure cover crop" during the winter.
... ... ...
update:
I'm in south-west Ohio (Cincinnati), and we have about the same stuff (weather) that you have there I'd say, close anyway. People have practiced these things also in east Indiana, at least, to Seymour, IN (hwy 50).
... ... ...
Oh, yeah, Northern Kentucky too.
for your garden
It is the right time of year to transplant fruit trees, grapes, and brambles as well as prune them while they are dormant. If you don't have a green house or a lot of row covers, then wait to start your seeds for transplant until about a month before your last average frost. For seeds that are direct sowed wait till your ground warms up and frost is gone.
Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.

What are row covers? I would like to get some bluebery bushes . Is now a good time? What about potatoes? Don't you start those early?
basically something to keep the frost off it
I found a picture here to give you the idea. If you don't have many plants, you can use gallon pots just get them off before the sun cooks it the next day.
Blue berries are dormant now also, so you can transplant them, make sure to get 2 or 3 varieties so they can pollinate one another.
I'm thinking of growing potatoes in a barrel this year, drill some holes a little gravel, dirt, and then fill it with straw as they grow, harvest time just dump the barrel over.

What about soil prep?
Anything good to do to get the ground ready? My garden plot is still just part of the yard, is now a good time to get the grass off and till it up?
