**What is the Greatest Place to Live in? Most Freedom, Best Land to Farm, etc..

New Hampshire has the Free State Project (www.freestateproject.org), Wyoming has the Free State Wyoming Project (freestatewyoming.org), and Canada has some very nice land (http://www.landwatch.com/Comox-Valley-Vancouver-Island-Canad...) -although that piece is out of my price range.

What state, city, town, village, county, territory, or country offers the most oppurtunity when it comes to liberty. Where can I raise a family and start a farm (a farm isn't absolutely necessary though). Good schools, clean air, low taxes, welcoming people, libertarians, conservatives? I'm starting to think about where I might want to live. Can you help me out!?

Obviously nothing will be perfect, but is anything close?

I don't see it as any one state.

With all due respect (and good luck) to the FSP, most people aren't going to move to another state 1200 miles away from home, or another country in the Caribbean or South America.

I think any place where you can settle at least 30 miles away from any intermediate-sized city, 50 miles away from any large city, or 70 miles away from a major metropolis, is good enough. Most population in the US, even with sprawling exurbia, is densely clustered around big cities. Look out the passenger window at the landscape the next time you fly on a plane and see how massively empty everything becomes after you are 30 to 50 miles out from the city.

I Like The Look Of That...

... Shire place where the Hobbits live. Lots of singing and dancing, drinking, smoking up all you want, with a wizard that looks like Dr. Paul to protect you. Not sure I could get over the lack of guns and shoes though :-)

Amsterdam and Holland as a

Amsterdam and Holland as a whole is the best place I've ever been..But I was only there for about 4 days so I can only speak of that short time..

Lot to learn on this subject

Some great reading on a lot of these issues.

Be the Miracle!

SWITZERLAND!!!

Switzerland has almost no crime due to their mandatory gun ownership. They still have a semblance of federalism, which means if you don't like something, change it! Cantons are very independent. One of their four national languages is English, they have excellent soil for farming, and their level of personal liberty is staggering.

How about

Belize. Small English speaking country look it up. Not sure if I spelled it right.

Here's an idea

How about we rally up 6315 liberty lovers and buy that place on Vancouver Island? It would cost about $3958 CAD each and everyone would get 2 acres to their name. We could divide up the usable acreage and build Galt's Gultch there. If only there weren't any property taxes this would be perfect. You could be completely self-sufficient off the land.

i'll be ecstatic if the west

i'll be ecstatic if the west coast makes it another 2 years.

we'll have a better idea after this summer. watch for news on the ice caps. the ice caps are important because when they melt -- it upsets our ocean currents. and the ocean currents control our weather.

when they go ... those of us on the coast lines are toast. and unless a miracle happens -- they'll be gone by 2012. and that's if we're lucky. there is growing evidence that too much of it may thaw next summer.

people haven't connected the dots. people are still debating whether global warming is real. we don't have a great grasp of our ecosystem and how it stays functioning in a manner that is friendly to humans.

our gov't isn't preparing for martial law just to handle the economic meltdown. they also know another little secret.

Just a quick comment on how

Just a quick comment on how fast all this stuff is happening...

Around 7 or so years ago it was deeply researched by scientists that the Artic shipping lanes would be melted/clear enough for use by around 2050. It ended up happening 4 or 5 years later in August of 2007. 40+ years earlier than expected.

Just some food for thought!

Switzerland

If you don't like that answer, consider Ireland. Or you can stay here and help try to fix this mess.

Ireland is too expensive

Been there many times. Look at the market value of your home and what you can compare it to in Ireland. Our house is appraised at 420k, in Ireland we'd be living in a small townhouse. I understand their market is dropping, of course, but the real estate is still quite high. Love Ireland anyway.

I thought Switzerland has

If I'm not mistaken, it is a short period of training followed by a few weeks every few years and also re-certifications (to show that people can still maintain and properly use their equipment).

I do not believe their mandatory service is for years. The training is only for a few months as far as I recall. After that, you are part of the national defense basically for life.

Switzerland is probably one of the best defended nations in the world. Even Hitler did not dare invade them, even though he tried to talk tough in regards to them.

Pick your poison

I suggest there is less chance of required forced combat for a 17 year old male living in Switzerland than for a 57 year old male in the United States.
