Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act - Co-sponsored By Ron Paul

This would be a good step in mending our relationship with Cuba.

Leave it to the Cuban American National Foundation to oppose the bill. After 50 years, do they not realize the ineffectiveness of the current policy and who it hurts? Not the Castros... but the people. Look how Vietnam is doing, look at North Korea, look at Iran. Sanctions and embargoes don't appear to have the desired affect.

MEnd the relationship

I strongly believe, this is a real good time to mend the relationship of the US with Cuba. There should not be any problem with the country.

Sanctions and embargoes can’t do anything. We need the good things like wine, food, Cuban cigars etc. flowing from one place to other.
Cuban cigars

I think the hang up is -

Too much American property was nationalized by Cuba under Castro and the influential Corporations and Banks that lost are the stumbling block in resuming friendly relations with Cuba until they get their property back.

Good idea

Good idea, but I've got a better idea. How about the Freedom to Travel Anywhere You Danged Well Please Act of 2009? What business does the government have telling us where we can go and where we cannot?

Best time of my life; almost the end too

Cuban Missile Crisis October 1962.

My artillery battery was walking distance to a unspoiled Cuban Beach Cove. When hostilities died down, I was skinny dipping (snorkeling) with one hundred of my fellow Marines 24/7. Never occurred to me that we were almost nuked October 27th (American Attack Canceled). Fabulous snorkeling, and spear fishing.

I would love to go back. Since I was only in the bush (cactus), I hope it isn't like the Bahamas in town (ugh). What's funny me the wife walked right into a gunfight in the Bahamas, and she thought they were making a movie.

I believe that the Freedom

I believe that the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act (H.R. 874 in the House and S.428 in the Senate) have a better chance of passing this year and not being vetoed by our new President.

The idea of "we mean you no harm" has universal appeal.

I honestly believe that Ron Paul would receive a very warm welcome in ANY country that he visits.

Ironically, the countries that have the least economic and personal freedom may welcome him the most.

Drudge is painting this bill in a bad light

inserting the word "stealth" to the beginning of the article's headline entitled "Bill would drop travel restrictions to Cuba." The article is one-sided, definitely biased against the bill, and contains quotes such as:

"The bill has gone too far," said Francisco "Pepe" Hernandez, president of the Cuban American National Foundation.

"'It's a betrayal and it's not going to resolve anything,' said Lopez, who left Cuba in 1961.

Gee, I wonder how he really feels about the bill?

Conservatives obsess over 'national defense greatness'.

They've given ground to the globalists-socialists on every other issue that marks conservatism: free market capitalism (95% dead)...ending abortion (dead)....smaller government (very dead)...fiscal responsibility (extremely dead)---all they have left is military jingoism and hating other countries---and of course, gun rights--an issue they aren't sincere about at all, but have to give lip service toward to soothe their base.

It will be almost sadly ironic if the Republicans regain power they do not deserve because the Democrats are stupid enough to attack on the gun issue. I say 'almost'...because the Democrats retaining Congress would be even worse.

Of course. Their somehow

Of course. Their somehow the notion that our sanctions and embargoes are going to pressure the Castros out of power. I must admit that it just might work if they keep it up for another 20 years.

This just reinforces that

This just reinforces that politicians do not do things that work, they do things to get re-elected.

When SAC went to DEFCON 3 in November '62 I was on a all expense paid Caribbean vacation. Other than my FDC radio watch I was snorkeling and spear fishing in an unspoiled paradise 24/7. I had one of the best times of my life.

I've considered going back to Cuba via Mexico. I was in Beijing last year, WTF is the difference ?

I was there in 88

I was there in 88, this place is awesome if you like beaches & crystal clear water. Iguana's & Banana rats, there were big red crabs that would follow us down the street at night. we would hear click, click, click, coming from behind us when we turned around the Crab would scurry into the Ditch along the side of the Road, start walking again & click, click, click. Loved it

Yeah, I remember the Iguana's

As soon as we started digging our 105 mm Howitzers in, we heard this loud bang, our Msgt (gunny) shot one dead with his .45. He was holding the iguana's tail with one hand above his head and the beasts tongue was touching the ground. Iguanas were like neighborhood dogs all around us.

Don't remember any bananas, rats or crabs, but our scout sergeant was taking a dump and a deer nearby stepped on a land mine and scared this sergeant and he fell backward into his own.

The cactus has wasps in them, I found out the hard way. Oh, there is sharks and barracuda's too, but they don't bother you.

You're right. Not much of a difference.

Raoul Castro is undertaking similar economic reforms to those the Chinese took in the late 1980s.

Europeans can vacation in Cuba without restriction. Why not US citizens?

Cuba is beautiful. I would like to go again.

When I was there during the Missile Crisis my artillery battery was nestled between two small mountains on the windward side of GTMO and about a 100 yards from an unspoiled Caribbean cove and beach. When they decided WW III wasn't such a good idea after all, my whole outfit was down at the beach swimming, snorkeling and spear-fishing.

Most of us 19 y/o kids had no clue how close we came to dieing.

A lot of mosquitoes ! Bring quinine.

Cigars

And hopefully it can include the right to bring back Cuban Cigars. The travel agency industry is supporting this effort.

I'm ready to schedule my flight

and infect some Cuban with the liberty virus..

The dirty little secret is:

The dirty little secret is: the last thing Castro wants is Americans visiting Cuba and showing the Cuban society how great freedom is.

Castro is quite happy for European tourists to visit.

He'd like US visitors to join them. However, I don't think he'd be so keen for Cubans to vacation abroad!

You're right about that!

You're right about that! There are beautiful resorts that cater to Europeans and some Americans in certain parts of Cuba, but Cubans are forbidden from seeing them. The Cuban people don't even know about them.

As for the Cuban exiles, some of the big shots over here are just blinded by hatred but others have way too much money and influence to lose if Cuba became free. Cubans would lose their special status (in terms of immigration) and a ton of money would move from Miami to Havana.

It amazes me when I come in

It amazes me when I come in contact with a recent "immigrant" from Cuba. My father-in-law is Cuban, his family came over when he was 6. He just hired a recent cuban immigrant and they were driving through a gate that has an automatic opener. The guy was first of all amazed at the technology and amazed that there wasn't a Governement official at the gate watching them, not yet anyhow.

Thank you for posting this
