If you're growing things that typically transplant (tomatoes, peppers, perhaps lettuce, eggplant, cucumbers, beans) starting from plants is easier (and more expensive) if you haven't grown much from seeds before. If you do go with seeds, you'll want to get some planting mix that that is sterilized, and probably some styrofoam flats. You can get this kind of thing from

Gardener's Supply

If you want to plant Round-Up ready corn which is genetically modified with the use of antibiotics, then you can pay attention to the advice below.

It doesn't really matter if

It doesn't really matter if the seeds are organic, what does matter is how you raise them and feed them as they grow. Sometimes the genetically modified seeds produce much more than heirloom. As long as you treat the plants organically there should be no problem. Keep in mind, all corn is genetically modified. Corn, being a member of the grass family, started out producing an ear about an inch long. Over thousands of years humans have genetically modified into today's norm. Be careful because some genetically modified plants, if not from seed, may be sterile so repeated cultivation through seed would be impossible (you'd have to buy moe plants).

Live plants have become

horribly expensive. Go with seeds.

Granny Warrior Freedom Seed for Planting in your Garden!

We all remember freedom activist Linda "Granny" from her very successful April 15th freedom rally in front of the Capitol on a day when the Congressmen were actually there to see how many people care about America and liberty.

She has a supply of heirloom seeds for sale (very inexpensive) at her online store. She deserves our support in all endeavors.

Hey McCain-----┌П┐(◣_◢)┌П┐

I love this country (so far)

Went to the local super-market (Chicago-'burb) yesterday and bought 10 cans of normally $3 soup for a buck @ on sale. I used the self checkout scanner machine and it keeps giving me a $10 off coupon my next purchase. I've been back to the well five-times now (3 today) and have another $10 off coupon.

We have an all you can eat major-chain buffet close by. And us seniors can eat between 1-3 weekdays for $5.99. Food is definitely outstanding for the price ! We have more stores and restaurants than you can shake a stick at all giving special pricing. Milk $1.88, eggs .88 cents.

The Economy is so good here in Chicago 'burbs my daughters health club in Bloomingdale, IL is unbelievably humongous with two huge-huge swimming pools (one outdoor) and she tells me last night 5-6 PM that people were waiting in the huge parking lot and fighting for empty parking spaces. She said when she got in every exercise machine in the place was busy. I have been to that health club and makes mine look like a pretender and we have two pools too.

The house across the street that the previous owner was under-water with at $249K and abandoned, was just sold for $140K.

We have all of Lake Michigan, not a well or river.

Besides a pear, apple and four different kinds of cherry trees I have a big garden too :)

Starting garden

But only from Heirloom seeds..thet are not geneticlly modified
and they are on-line...arrived within 3 weeks time...now I don't
know what part of the US you live (you mayl live outside the US
like Washington D.C. which is a district of the Columbia and not
part of the US) but in either case, the packets will tell you if you
should start them indoors or you can plant them directly in the
soil....where I live, I have to start some in March indoors because
they only have a certain amount of time to grow before the fall
starts its frost...so, do some on-line learning..you will do well
in either case because you know what's coming!

thank you. i forgot my '

we're

I think the

Granny Warriors still have some seeds and a survival book for sale. On the right side under Blogroll click on Granny Warriors, I was thinking of getting some too.

Join a scion and seed exchange

Be on the lookout for Garden Club, Food Forests, colleges with agriculture programs, and nurserys offering a scion and seed exchange in your area. We just had one that offered free grafting classes, free scions and two tables of free organic GMF seeds, heirlooms... and the opportunity to meet farmers and gardeners who LOVE to share tips and graphs.

Hardly Socialism

The one from yesterday that Chonk123 started is gone now and there was alot of good info on it! Perhaps it could go under a "survival" or preparedness type tab instead of them being deleted!!

Check

Check your local garden center. Mine sells organic and heirloom seeds. Also, if your going to go with seeds you better start soon. I personally go with plants, I can get a six pack of tomato and most other plants for .99 to 1.99 for a six pack, so it's just easier and cheaper for me. Though I have stocked up on seeds just in case.

how do you find out which seeds are non-GMO?

I've been using American Seed and Ferry-Morse seeds. I thought all seeds were "organic" up until they are fullgrown or whenever they start to receive pesticides, etc.? How do I find out which are GMO and non-GMO or who sells the non-GMO ones? Afterall, I do want to buy the cheapest ones. :P

bluto20

I like

Fedco seeds (of maine). they are competitively priced, have a great selection, and they do not knowingly sell GMO seeds. they encourage the open-polinated varieties (although they do sell some hybrids). With the OP varieties, you can save seeds for next year.

you'll have to order soon, if you want them to send the seeds this year.

I must admit that GMO-garden seeds shouldn't be your biggest worry. basically:
if a (store-bought) food product contains corn or soybeans (or Canola?-I'm not sure on this) it will have used Genetically Modified product.
otherwise, it is probably GMO free.

there are very few GMO seeds available for gardeners, even though a huge % of the (subsidized) corn and soybeans are GMO.

Don't forget about potatoes

Don't forget about potatoes and, especially Jerusalem Artichokes. If things get really bad, you are going to want to be able to grow a staple food. Potatoes can be grown in relatively small spaces if you keep piling up the dirt. Jerusalem Artichokes are a kind of sunflower that produces a frost hardy tuber. The "artichokes" are extremely easy to maintain, can be worked into an attractive landscape (they are sunflowers) and will provide food during the winter months.

Tons of internet info about gardens!

Plants, cool weather crops: are most generally started with plants cause it shortens the time to harvest. And, for an extended garden in the fall, once again, cool weather crops come to the rescue. And, seeds may rot from the spring rains. But, you can try seeds!

Exceptions to this, like peas.

The general thought is: if the crop takes a long time to mature, it's helpful to get 'em off to a quick start by growing them weeks ahead in a warm place.

Lettuce, Chard, Spinach, Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Peas, Onions, Carrots, Radish, Beets, Potato's etc."

My bonus info: : - )

potatoes: There are actual seeds for potatoes but most generally no one wants to mess with 'em (always good for an argument as well with people who say there is no such thing as a potato seed). They go with the seed potatoes, tubers, as there called.

"True Potato Seed

'TPS-true potato seed-is harvested from the berries that grow among the foliage of potato plants"

Usual potato, so-called seeds

onions, by seed, optional: they require a long growing season if you're going to harvest the 'large' onions. My father sows 'em in late fall, they'll pop-up when there ready. May want a raised bed for 'em, a "special spot". They'll grow all season long.

I'm pretty sure that if you're after the large onions, that they are not started with the "onion sets" but by the onion seed only.

Good Point: "jmf866 says:"

Seeds take longer, but are much cheaper, and you have a wider selection.

I found that it is very hard

to get onions to sprout from seeds.

I grew

tomatoes in the house this winter in 1 foot diameter pots using a four tube florescent light fixture with 4 grow lite bulbs.

It is still winter and the tomatoes are large and ready to ripen. I will do this again but start earlier in August to get tomatoes for December. Two corner windows and one light fixture that I propped on a shelf aimed horizontally at the plants worked really well. It is nice to work among the plants in winter.

I have a summer garden too. For people with not much yard or who live in apartments the grow lite florescent bulbs work really well. In addition to tomatoes you can grow lettuce, onions, radishes, and even bean vines and cucumbers.
