Retailers' loss of revenue hammers city and state budgets

0 votes

In the world of shopping centers, strip malls and the cities that house them, a closed Ann Taylor here or an out-of-business Circuit City there might not matter much.

But the timing and immensity of the current downturn in retail are dire, and not just for the employees who lose jobs, the company shareholders and the shoppers who no longer can buy from their favorite stores. Cities — entire regions, even — that boomed as Americans shopped till they almost dropped for more than a decade are struggling mightily because spending has almost slammed to a stop.

This is what has also killed

our principle business (before now that is) of asphalt maintenance.

We run on businesses spending their capital money. Places like strip malls run by property managers that spend their capital money...now they don't want to spend their capital money. Churches are another big customer for us. But every church that we were supposed to be taking care of last year said, "We don't have the money. No one is giving..."

If things continue like this, you can expect to see parking lots begin to crumble, pot holes forming, alligator spots, and cracks so wide that you could put your foot off in them. There won't be any lines on the parking lot to mark parking spaces which imo makes a business look like it is in a shady part of town because the property managers don't want to spend the money on upkeep...or they don't have it.

Not only will you see empty stores if this continues, but lack of maintenance will cause other things to crumble as well. Watch your cars ...and your ankles if you go shopping.
