Department of Education

So I'm writing a paper on the role of government in education for an English class, and I was hoping that some of you could point me to some articles or websites where I could expand my knowledge of the topic. The teacher has painted herself as a Marxist, and I'm attempting to change that. She did not know much about Libertarianism, but was pretty receptive when I spoke to her and told her about C4L. I want to make this paper as conscise and well articulated as possible, so any help would be very well received.

Thanks

how about this?

Note how little the Fed contributes (9%) and yet they mandate everything about how our education system is run. That is in the first paragraph. Deconstruct this whole page - use the Department's own words to show how far wrong they have gone. I just love this one:
"History
The original Department of Education was created in 1867 to collect information on schools and teaching that would help the States establish effective school systems."

"HELP THE STATES" seems to have become "force compliance from the states."

Good luck!

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

Listen to chapter 7 of

Listen to chapter 7 of Murray Rothbard's: For a New Liberty on education. Best argument I've ever heard for the government to get out of education. http://mises.org/media.aspx?action=category&ID=87

She doesn't know much about Marxism, either.

Have her read The Gulag Archipelago. If she's still a Marxist after that, write her off as either an idiot or someone who is truly depraved.

Unfortunately, I cannot

Unfortunately, I cannot point to any websites, but from my experience in college, only "academic" and "credible" resources can be used for credit. Good luck with that. Most of these that qualify are toothless propoganda socialist pieces. You might get lucky if you use some .edu resources aimed at Soviet Union propoganda in schools and the results thereof. Then draw some parallells.

i would say

mises.com or org, i cant remember, if you dont know that site already. ithas tons of audio and video seminars, and digital books for free. it is a great site for learning.

"Socialism needs two legs on which to stand; a right and a left. While appearing to be in complete opposition to one another, they both march in the same direction." - Paul Proctor

I hope you're prepared for the academic result, but I applaud

your objective. Thomas Sowell wrote a book in 1993 called: Inside American Education - The Decline, The Deception, The Dogmas. It's a good starting place to discover what has become of the education (indoctrination) system in this country, as well as the "contibutions" made by the U.S. Dept. of mis-Education.

I don't want to discourage your efforts but a logical presentation of facts is not the stuff that is normally likely to change the mind of a Marxist. To them, logic is the real enemy and truth no more than an everyday nuisance. At the risk of making a collectivist observation, I think most Marxists make excellent mainstream historians; they normally have a profound contempt for fact.
