Obama approves Afghanistan troop increase
Busy day for Obama. He signed the stimulus package that no one read and he approved a troop increase in Afghanistan. I don't think I've seen this posted yet:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama has approved a significant troop increase for Afghanistan, Pentagon officials said Tuesday.
The new troop deployment is expected to include 8,000 Marines from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as well as 4,000 additional Army troops from Fort Lewis, Washington.
"This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires," Obama said in a written statement.
"The Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan, and al Qaeda supports the insurgency and threatens America from its safe haven along the Pakistani border." See what CNN's Barbara Starr says about the increase on the AC360 blog
Another 5,000 troops will be deployed at a later date to support combat troops, bringing the total to 17,000 the Defense Department said. A senior administration official confirmed the total.
The Obama administration has been conducting several reviews of U.S. policy in Afghanistan, including a review by Gen. David Petraeus, the commander in the region. The president and the Pentagon have been considering a request from the top commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David McKiernan, to send as many as 30,000 additional troops.
Obama said the troop increase in Afghanistan would be made possible in part by the impending troop drawdown in Iraq.

...to Pakistan. The government forces just caved to the Islamist forces in the Swat Valley...they have agreed to let the militants implement sharia law there. I'm concerned that this is going to snowball out of control and lead to even more direct intervention in the northwestern tribal areas of Pakistan.

This reported concession to allow tribal law in the
tribal areas could be to appease their own people and allow US Forces to do the job there.
The Pakistani government does not have the ability to fight this battle. The Pakistani intelligence service, ISI, is too tightly connected to the militants in the tribal areas. This is strategic as the militants in this area are expert guerilla fighters and are a vaulable military asset to the Pakistanis. They could not and will not go in to rout these fighters. They will, however, allow us to operate from their bases for money.
We now are flying drones from Pakistani bases to attack militant targets in the Swat valley and tribal areas.
The territory controlled by US forces is ever increasing.

His supporters are still right there with him, making excuses. It wasn't ok when Bush did this kind of thing but Obama supporters seem to think it's ok for Obama.
