Massachusetts may consider a mileage charge

BOSTON - A tentative plan to overhaul Massachusetts' transportation system by using GPS chips to charge motorists a quarter-cent for every mile behind the wheel has angered some drivers.
"It's outrageous, it's kind of Orwellian, Big Brotherish," said Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, who drafted legislation last week to prohibit the practice. "You'd need a whole new department of cronies just to keep track of it."
But a "Vehicle Miles Traveled" program like the one the governor may unveil this week has already been tested , with positive results , in Oregon.
Governors in Idaho and Rhode Island, as well as the federal government, also are talking about such programs. And in North Carolina, a panel suggested in December the state start charging motorists a quarter-cent for every mile as a substitute for the gas tax.
"The Big Brother issue was identified during the first meeting of the task force that developed our program," said Jim Whitty, who oversees innovation projects for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

if somehow this happens I hope that
the first chips are installed in every politician's car. And all the info be placed on the net. Let's track all govt vehicles next - we are taxpayer and they are supposed to be working for us. It will be amusing to see if those vehicles are at food stores or shopping malls or used for vacations. If they are used for that - that should be reportable income tax benefits to the depts of revenue. I remember the outrage when a former governor used the state police helicopter for a trip for a sick child.
The state just voted to keep the state tax. Within a few weeks we were all informed the state highway dept was in dire need of more money. Odds are gas tax is going up. Oh its not determined but latest projections are 20-30 cents per gallon. There is also a proposal to double tolls. My question is... what has been happening to the gas taxes we pay to the fed and state for all of these years? Has it been swallowed into the general budget?
The highest rising costs are benefits to current employees and retirees. No one wants to tell us that. The solution in the liberal mind for every problem is to spend more money and increase taxes (or create deficits for future generations to deal with).
This RFID thing is big brother watching everyone.
It was a small group of people pissed off in the 1700's that tossed that tea into the ocean. If our forefathers saw what is happening today - man, would they be wild. Maybe the way to beat this proposal down is to force them to do what I wrote in the first paragraph. Let's see where every govt employee is.
Lastly - how many more govt jobs would this proposal create? This is also about more govt employees and more Dem votes to keep the same system. FWIW - I have heard that govt retirees do not pay income taxes on their retirements. If this is true - how can that happen at a time when the state is in need of additional funds? Its counter productive for the liberals.
Hmmm...Massachusetts and Bwany Fwank...
what do the two have in common? Insanity.
Jumping the gun
Talk about idiotic half-baked proposals.
First off, there just aren't enough electric cars to justify this method tax. Secondly, they certainly wouldn't be providing any incentive, or would be negating other incentives, for people to switch to alternate fuels.
In addition, who's to say these douchebags wouldn't go the next step and embed a tracking circuit in the same chip?
No. Never. This idea is unacceptable. There must be a better, less intrusive way to fund road maintenance that doesn't smack of Orwell's 1984.

dont forget
he { the governor of Mass} and Obama are best of buddies. and I bet there is more behind this plan
People would just figure out
People would just figure out how to remove said chips. It is a stupid idea.
Resident in Boston
Blah blah blah yeah the taxes here are awful and yes I hate this governor more then life itself but to call all of Massachusetts (HOME OF THE REVOLUTION) brain-dead idiots?
Please.
Ya know I voted for Ron Paul in the primaries and never regretted it. But I am continue to be displeased with his intolerant supporters.
P.S. Idaho? Go back to picking your potatoes.
And you call yourself a Ron Paul supporter...
My friend you are the only brain dead idiot here, and probably a red sox fan too...
Did you just diss Idaho?
My oh my, how intolerant of you.
Obviously I was not claiming "all of Massachusetts...brain dead idiots," I knew most regular DPers would understand I was talking about the "brain dead" liberal politicians.
But, considering your post, perhaps it would be apropos to include some of the voters who keep them in power. However, I would give some of the voters a pass as simple ignorance or naivete does not a brain dead idiot make. Now pay attention, that still does not include ALL of Massachusetts.
BTW, even the lone Democratic member of the House of Representatives in Idaho voted against the "stimulus" plan.

Taxachusetts
.
No surprise. Taxation is growing everywhere. Massachusetts and pretty close to socialist as it is, and New York is trying to add over 100 new taxes.
Man, I am glad I moved off the mainland. The islands are poor, but thank God the government is so inept they couldn't pass a tax if they wanted to.
This garbage does not surprise me...
...in liberal "brain dead" areas like (don't pump your own gas) Oregon or Massachusetts.
But, being considered in Idaho? Oh, hell no!

“A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement” - Thomas Jefferson
“We have allowed our nation to be over taxed and over regulated and overrun by bureaucrats, the founders would be ashamed of us for what we're putting up with.” Ron Paul
heh, so the big brother aspect of this was 'addressed' ?
addressed like the concerns of people about the cameras on toll plazas that were used to provide evidence in at least one criminal trial that I know of. We were assured any data would be confidential, etc, etc.
These people need to take a long walk off a short pier.

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants
And I'm sure our ever so
And I'm sure our ever so good at anything but building decent cars countrymen in Detroit, and their Taxachusetts union cronies have had nothing to do with a rule charging the same 'road wear' tax per mile on a Honda Fit as on a Cadillac Escalade....
I'm generally for replacing arbitrary taxes with usage based fees, but to work without distortion, such schemes have to track usage properly.
I'm just looking forward to a time when all these usage taxes, in combination with smaller budgets for police officers, leads to the establishment of more well oiled smuggling networks. Heck, sooner or later everyone will be a crook here too, like in some of the former Soviet republics. At least then, people will have a more proper assessment of what the government really is; nothing but a bunch of worthless crooks and thieves.
A person would have to buy a GPS device for each vehicle
The state would have to set up buy monitoring equipment, pay someone to run the equipment. as the economy enters a depression does the people or the state have the money to set this up? Besides being under the watchful eye of big brother.
Auction the roads
Remove all taxes, auction off all public assets and charge a use fee at the risk free interest rate on the in place liquidation value of artificial property rights. Artificial property rights are those beyond natural property rights. Natural property rights are self-ownership AND homestead (shelter and survival territory).
Land is a natural right.
If you read nothing else, read this: A Contract Between Americans
The Hummer
The thieves who propose that bill probably drive Hummers and own stock in the GPS companies. People who drive 35 horse power Kias are not going to be amused.
Not only are our freedoms diminishing so is the use of our brain
Maybe we need to have a minimum brain useage tax. If our brain isnt being used so much then you are taxed for it. WAIT A MINUTE ! That would mean that we would have to over tax ninty nine percent of our government. All three branches.
So, we have chips installed in cars as well as our bodies because our government is here to help. Is that right?
People, I think the elitist are trying to pick a fight. Well, they allready passed the picking line. We need to give them a upper cut and a kick in the nadsters.
Unconstitutional. Since those in this article are for cheaper, quicker and simpler. Let's get rid of his position. That would be cheaper, simpler and quicker. Throw him out and get some one who knows and understands what the job of a public servant is.
Let 'em try
The more they overreach, the more people wake up and start to resist. And I think that's our best shot, in the end: mass civil disobedience.

There the problem of farmers & ranchers
who drive miles on farmland checking cattle, fences and crops. So that farmer will be charged for driving out in his field? Then the idea of knowing big brother knows where you have been, even if you have nothing to hide it an intrusion of privacy.
I particularly like the part...
... where it says in London, they actually charge more for milage during peak commuter hours. So they actually charge those who go to work more for going to work. Pure awesomeness.
terrific points
perhaps I should charge the city for walking on its streets using my meals as fuel?

What was the first thing CFR member Deval Patrick did after being 'elected' Governor?
Buy a Cadillac.
He ain't old or poor, just sleazy.
Maybe the reason he spent so much time in China was to find an outsource for implementing this system?
His masters would be most upset if he gave this task to an American.
This beer is to you patriot*)
When I was reading your great comment I had a pleasant vision of Dennis Kucinich and Naomi Wolf reading it with me and waking the hell up to the bleeping reality.
cheers*)
