**DPER'S--What did all of you do after high school or college? Regrets or Advice?!

I went to high school and am currently attending the University of San Francisco. I have gone on a few adventurous trips around the world. My college experience is fun but I feel like I can do more. There is an entire world out there. I want to do so much, but there is so little time. Sometimes I become really depressed about the future. I hear so much doom and gloom that I don't know how to take it. I don't know if I am on the right path. Obviously, I am going to do my own thing; however, I am looking to all of you for guidance because you are my internet family. I want to hear your story, what you have done, what you regret not doing or doing, and what you plan to do?

My advice

Turn to God. Although we here can give you a thousand different ideas and many of them are great they ultimately won't matter. Turn to God, read the bible, follow Him and your paths will be straight. I am not saying it will be easy but you will be on the right path and going in the right direction. Here is my story in a nutshell which may help you.

1. Graduated High School.
2. Went to college (UNLV and then ITT).
3. Moved around out west looking for something (wasn't sure what).
4. Got depressed.
5. Got more depressed after 9/11.
6. Moved back home to Indiana.
7. Started a job.
8. Joined a rock band and began drinking heavily and being very promiscuous.
9. Did this for several years and finally hit rock bottom.
10. Came back to God after meeting my wife.
11. Depression gone.
12. Drinking gone.
13. Love abounding.
14. Extremely successful businesses, I have two of them.
15. A wonderful loving family and children and a wonderful church family.
16. An absolute sense of direction in my life.
17. Salvation.

So, maybe that will help you.

You had to ask this, didn't you?

Let me 1st tell you that I believe college is a means of indoctrination -- I firmly believe in the existence of an educational industrial complex, just as you've heard of the medical industrial complex, military industrial complex and so on, others exist. Teenagers, before they have whiskers are slipped away from their mother's arms & their parents homes to go off far away to college & fend for themselves, against Professors who teach against their morality & pressure them into doing things they don't know how to defend themselves against, not to mention their peers. The list goes on. There are plenty of abortion centers located next to college campuses, so mommy & daddy never have to know. I never heard a thing about the Industrial Complexes that exist, about the Federal Reserve Bank ownership, or about the non-requirement to file income taxes in college. Just think about it, when you get a Master's or Doctoral degree, unless it's in medicine, the school must approve your topic, you're working for them! You're getting a degree in exchange for research you do for them that you pay for! And, if you think you're not partially paying for the brand name when you go to college, you're wrong! If you don't think that high tuition costs come partially from going to a prestigious university instead of a state school whose name you don't have to pay for, you're wrong. The most important thing to remember when selecting an occupation is tolerance. I don't care what you like to do, your hobby, if you can't get a job in it, forget it. I don't care what you're passionate about, if you can't tolerate it for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year, forget about it. It's not a sin or a bad thing, maybe a stigma not to have a college degree, humanity has survived this long without them. And, just for your information, the Department of Labor has no Constitutional authority to exist, so you shouldn't receive overtime, EEO accommodation, be eligible to participate in a labor union, or have any kind of job security other than what the free market naturally provides. If your state wants to supply these things, that's another story.
Stay out of the military, unless you are in agreement w/ the US occupying 130 countries, we haven't declared war & if you want to be under the UCMJ which has definition-less rules. Uniform Code of Military Justice.

For some reason, we're expected to know every law that exists in America & in our state so we don't break it. We're supposed to know this when we're 18. There's no litmus test for them, as in the 10 commandments or rhyme or reason. C.U.R.E.

I finished H.S. in the Marines

The Marines was my college of hard knocks what I should have done. Stay in school.

I wound up at ground zero with 10,000 other Marines for WW III, October 1962, Guantanamo Bay Cuba. The Russians had 47,000 fully battle dressed troops and 230,000 enemy Cuban troops. When my artillery battery was flown in by jet from California, we were the first 1,000 to arrive. To make things worse, the Russian General had Moscow's permission to use his 14 tactical nuclear missiles on attacking troops. His missiles were 1 1/2 megaton FROG, Luna's, each 1/2 megaton bigger than Hiroshima. The American attack was canceled 1/2 hour prior to "H" hour on October 27, 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis.

August 1964 I was with the first Marines sent to Vietnam, the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, seven thousand Marines.

I missed the Dominican Republic Invasion of 1965 by a technicality, less than sixty days of active service left on five years. I and another Marine had individual orders from my outfit to go. The other Marine was killed in action there.

I was stationed (home base) in Okinawa, Japan for two years with the 12th Marine Artillery Regiment on Camp Zukeran. I met and married my Japanese wife of 45 years there (the smartest thing I ever did). She waits on me hand and foot. Highly recommended ;)

I was in all 3 active Marine Corps Divisions, and on more Navy ships that I can count or remember. I've been all over Asia, Canada, Mexico, South America, all the Hawaiian Islands and swam in the lake in the middle of the Panama Canal while aboard the USS Iwo Jima (Helicopter Carrier). I'd love a trip to Europe, but the wife has family in Japan and got to keep her happy, so we go there.

I became a maintenance electrician after the Marines and after 15 years of that I became an entrepreneur for 13 years and retired at 53. Now 66.

My hobbies/sports are/were marksmanship, weightlifting, gymnastics, judo, karate, surfing, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, and gardening.

I go to the gym everyday now, weightlifting, cardio and swimming.

Favorite food, sushi and sashimi (raw fish).

I hardy used any of my 5 years of Federal G.I. Bill for college and the same for my Illinois G.I. Bill. Never used my VA Loan either (it ain't worth the paper it is written on).

2006 I spent a month in the PRC, Beijing and Japan and Okinawa. Going back to Japan and Okinawa later this year. I love deep sea fishing in the South China Sea.

I have two children (boy 40 and girl 44) and five beautiful grandchildren. Also a new all white toy poodle puppy, "Nitro" (he's eccentric and can go off at any time).

Thank you note.

Everyone,
Thank you so much for all the advice. I appreciate it so much and have taken each and every word to heart.

After High School,

I went into the military. Don't do that.
Then I went to University which is a good idea if you can get someone to pay for it. Study engineering or computer science or maybe something in healthcare.

After university

I got married and I stayed married, and we're coming up on our 29th anniversary. I raised a family. I home schooled our offspring, who also graduated from a university.

I would do it again. Highly recommended! No regrets.

Well

after going to public and private schools growing up, finally getting my HS Diploma in 2005 from a private school in Virginia, I left Virginia (Which is growing too much) for Davie/Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to go to community college and party my ass off! I Did that for 2 years and got a girlfriend, and eventually got mono and was sick for 4 months! Then I moved to a country area of east Bradenton, Florida on the west coast. Still going to college, and I will get my AA Degree this summer. Then transfering to a 4 year college for a business degree, maybe Auburn University or Clemson Univ. I got accepted to Auburn already. I want to learn a lot about economics and finance. I'm taking accounting and business calculus right now, hard stuff. Ron Paul has led me to have an interest in economics and finance. After college, I plan to travel europe, maybe go into the Marine Corps like my uncle and my dad.

If I were you I would travel

If I were you I would travel the country doing odd jobs to get by, get your education from people that have been there and done that. Everything that I have learned in this life that has done me any good came from old people rich and poor, they all have a story and it is free, you just have to take the time to listen.

learn to drill water wells

Up-front investment on a used rig isn't too bad.

I know well drillers and they are always making money. In slow times and in drought, they are always busy. Everyone needs water.

Many drillers make $1-$2k per day profit.

Water is becoming the new oil. Plus, only those permitted to drill wells have an absolute monopoly on the industry.

If you are a single man, leave the Country for Asia ASAP.

Think of it as getting your 5 year Asian Degree. Go to Singapore or Thailand or Seoul Korea or Kyoto Japan and LEARN an Asian language as fast as you can. Then do part time bookkeeping on the side, and teach English where ever you can, party all night long. Then in five years you will have mastered a foreign language, you will know the inside language of Asian business bookkeeping/accounting (don't sell this skill/knowledge short!!! It will pay HUGE for you later). You will be in an excellent position to be an Entrepreneur and start your own business in Inport/Export and also your resume will look like Gold with the foreign language skills & Accounting Skills. You will be able to JUDGE the value of companies, you will know how to talk the talk of Asian business, and you will be an American --- your arms will stretch the Pacific --- you will be Money. You will also be street smart and Cosmopolitan and you will be SOVEREIGN. You will be Internationally Sovereign which means, you will be truly free of Nations..which are just human zoos or Farmer (govt) fields anyway. So you will be an international bee flying over fences and bouncing from flower to flower collecting all the nectar that that world has to offer. You will not be bound to just one farmer's flower field. The biggest international corporate Giants will have their tongue out for you. You may take a ride for 2 years on their wings to add to your knowledge, to gain big corporation experience, to place that on your resume. You could be a real player, a real Tia Pan (Yes, buy the book). The sky's the limit. There is ZERO reason for YOU to be worried about YOUR future.

And if you are a single woman, send me an email with your picture. (wink)

That's hilarious!

But it sounds like a fun bit of advice for a young person.

Hey FreeJesseVentura... lets you and me get together and

spread that idea expressed in that Alan Moore quote around, as best we can, however we can, when we can, with all means possible. What do you say? Shall we conspire to get this done?

In Peace & Liberty,

PS.... Shhh! Please don't tell anyone what we are up too. If its a deal, give me that special handshake. If you don't agree, may I advise you to pretend you never ever heard of this idea.... and should you find groups of us spreading the idea around that there are no such things as conspiracies ... well then you'll have to ADMIT there is such a thing as a conspiracy afoot! So which is it?

I graduated in May

And here is my advice.

If you go on to college, make sure it's in a field that you know will be solid for a long time to come (i.e. healthcare). Truth be told, a college degree has about as much worth as an FRN. Why? The government has made it so everyone with 1/4th of a brain can get one. When everyone has a degree, the value goes down exponentially. Not only that, they've devised a way to load the average college student with a mountain of debt along the way.

Don't be pushed into going to college. One of the things that has destroyed our economy is the notion that blue collar workers are second-rate citizens. That is not true. We need people to work at factories right after high school, to make things, to learn trades. These skills are extremely valuable to our economy's overall health, as we're learning now. This country needs to go back to making things.

EXACTLY!

This works 100% of the time, with a sincere heart!

I went to college for a year after high school. I didn't have the money for next year's tuition, so I dropped out. I could have applied for a student loan, but the idea of being in debt after school was not appealing... I left with about 30 bucks in my pocket, and lived on someone's couch for a few months while I found a job. Then, I got an apartment with a friend, and over a 2 year period slowly saved some money. During that time I felt really down because I didn't know what to do, and I didn't know where my life was going. I recommitted myself to the LORD. He let me know that He was in control, and that I didn't have to worry about the future- this gave me sooo much peace. Then one day, God put it in my heart to hike the Appalachian Trail. I'm leaving in 7 days. Never would have thought I'd be doing this. Now I get to go into the woods for 6 months and spend some quality time with the G Man, his buddy JC, and the H-Unit! What I do after that I'm leaving up to Him. Sooo my point is, I agree with Kevin- PRAY!

Do SOMETHING

I'm 25 now, and will shortly be enrolling in law school, provided there are any stupid enough to let me in, and provided there remains an economy from which to draw some credit.

If you don't already know, learn now how to WORK toward something.

The only advice I can give you is to make sure you do something productive, add something to yourself, acquire some skills, make and attain some goals. You will have fun anyway, but you won't add to yourself without deliberate effort. And in the absence of a sense of purpose or attainment, fun and frivolity will begin to feel like leprosy eating away at you.

Do some small thing everyday to better yourself. I recently made a list to remind myself everyday to be mindful of and work toward:

1) God
2) Freedom
3) Beauty

Needless to say, there's some overlap, but not without, first, the work.

2 year degree as a radiologic technologist(xray tech)

best investment ever,2 years of school $6000. starting salary $65000 a year. after 5 years in up to $85,00 a year. best move I ever made.

I did the same. Live in

I did the same. Live in Illinois, not quit as good of pay but still a good start.

Real skills

The most valuble things to learn I feel are real skills basic carpentry, plumbing, welding etc... then apply those to becoming self sufficient, off the grid lifestyles, it being the need of the hour of sorts, may not be glitzy, but to get you and your family through tough times you will need it.

After graduating HS in 1979

After graduating HS in 1979 I joined the USAF and spent my next 20 years traveling the world and serving my country and getting my Bachelor Degree in Business. During those 20 years I took the oath to "Protect and Defend the Constitution" around 6 times. Those words meant something to me every time as they still do today. Since joining the soul-less corporate world since I got out 10 years ago, I continue to wish I had stayed in the AF. It was probably one of the best decisions I made in my life. I miss the lifestyle.
