My Prediction of the Future

This is how I see it playing out - First the job loss, then the welfare checks dry up, the states go bankrupt. The states cut back on services and raise taxes and other charges which will only compound the economic depression. At the same time you will have migration and protest. If protest/ riots are persistent, the government with initiate marshal law. The media will effectively isolate these stories and eventually would stop reporting on them all together - think Iraq war coverage. It will affect different areas differently. You'll see inflation for commodities with fast turn over like food, while seeing deflation or steady prices for slow turn over items and non essentials like clothing and television sets. If the government continues paying out welfare checks, you will see hyperinflation as the amount of money increases, chasing the same amount of commodities on the market. The government will try to help out - think FEMA during Katrina. But for the most part people will feel like they are on their own. The depression will last and last, and the government will say "if we just keep staying the course with our plans it will be over sooner" - think Iraq war propaganda. The government will call for a new "international agency of finance" and who will support this? For one, the retirees, the ones who depend on the government the most for their social security.
