My first egg yesterday
Figure it only cost us $175.00
hahaha
Sweet
OK how much per chicken and what part of the country are you in?
My local feed store just got Road Island Reds and rocks at $ 2.89 each and I'm waiting till next Tuesday to get my Americanas at $ 3.00 each. I had 32 chickens before now going to do it again.

You can buy 4-6 week old pullets here for around 3-8 dollars
depending on the breed. Saves you having to brood them up to that age. I am in the middle of alabamastan. Ask around and see if you have a livestock auction any where close by.
Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.

That's adorable!
But, if you like fried chicken, I don't recommend naming the hens.
Did you get my email?
With the picture of my chick brooder??

Looked strange on the 'recently posted' list when seen by itself.

Guinea are very good watch dogs I have a dozen and really like them but Don't mess with them whens they have chicks, hehe.

Raising Chickens is very smart
Congratz on building a nice home for a handful of hens. Last year in preparation for this period in time my wife and I put together a full, blown coop and run. We now have 16 laying hens with 7 more growing up fast. The eggs are a good supplemental income (selling them to friends and co-workers for $3/dozen) along with providing our family all the eggs we could possibly eat (and we eat a bunch).
We're working on expanding our operation to include a 2nd flock in a tractor built for 6-10 hens to do do our own crosses. While we have a ton of land we also have a ton of hawks in the area, so no free-ranging for us.
Anyone interested in raising chickens should visit www.backyardchickens.com. It's an outstanding resource for all things chickens, including coop/run designs, breed differences, a marketplace and tutorials on just about anything you can think of.

BTW
If any of you have extra pennies together and live near Virginia, you might want to pick up some of this for your chickens

(They have one nice collection of ingredients there; imagine trying to collect and blend all those things.)
What do you mean
when you refer to it as a chicken "tractor" ?
The term...
might have been coined by Andy Lee, who has a book with the title "Chicken Tractor."
From the book: A bottomless, portable shelter-pen that is sized to fit over your garden bed.
The idea is that the chickens cultivate and fertilize the bed, then you move it to another bed and plant in the cultivated bed.
Sounds good. Sad to say, it's a bit difficult to implement practically in the garden. At least it has been for us. Nevertheless, if you've got a really small flock (less than 8 chickens, say), such a rig might be a reasonable way to keep them.
Looks good but
how do you get the eggs out of that little hole?Ups,that came out wrong, how do you get the eggs out of that little door?Do you have to crawl in the pen
and stick your hand in there or
does the top lift off or something?
Egg door in the back

In my usual spirit of going a bit overboard, I have added CCTV
to the coop. Scroll all the way to the bottom for a funny picture of an office monitor being put to the wrong use (until we need it). You can also see my Ron Paul calender and monkey painting.

Dude...
You've got way too much time on your hands. ROFL
I watched mine when they were babies...now they are more like dogs. When they hear us in the house when we get up in the mornings, now they come sprinting across the yard and PECK at the back door to be fed their diet of all natural grains (no wheat or soy!) Otherwise...they peck around the yard all day. And SQUAWK loudly if they find that they are shut in their pen in the morning and cannot free range like they want.
They are truly hysterical to watch...but I don't want them on my TV. Happy viewing! lol
I am going to have to send you a picture of our brooder.

Thanks for the picture
That's just what I need! Just the right size. Guess I'm going to have to add carpentry skills to my list of things to learn. I really like that.

Soooo I just love that.
It is WAAAY CUTE. Red hens too. When I was young we had some chickens reds and whites. There was one red hen we were so attached to. She was such a good momma hen. Something attacked her and killed her chick, she survived but had one leg. She went a long time with that one leg, I loved that chicken. I would really like to have some chickens but it has been so long ago not sure if I could take care of them properly. I am so thrilled for you. They will be so much fun for you. That little tractor looks great. Let us know when you get some eggs nothing is better than fresh eggs.
