I'm running for office
Submitted by ladalang on Sun, 02/22/2009 - 01:37
I've taken Dr Paul's advice and I'm running for office in my community. My goal is to some day rub elbows with my hero and vote right along side him on issues and pass the Constitutional test. I'm running as a libertarian; an easy choice in this day. Stop by my site, post on my forum and help me spread the message of liberty!

Good Luck, Joyce.
You sound like a great candidate. :)

Good Luck! after reading your website...
and seeing how involved you have been in your community - I think you stand a great chance of winning - no matter which party you align yourself with.....

thank you!
You can win!!
Please don’t listen to Daryl. You absolutely can win. I am a former City Commissioner who ran as an Independent in a heavily Democratic city and had both parties candidates to contend with; I still won! So can you.

You will lose
If you run as a Libertarian. Yes, there is always a slim chance you could win, however, the numbers are stacked against you.
My best advice is to change parties, let's not forget. Parties have political resources that a candidate needs, and offer a huge advantage over an independent candidate with none of these resources.

Local politics like mayor or city councilors,
nobody really cares what party your with. I have lived in the same city all my life, and I only know of one such person's political affiliation. It doesn't really matter at this level, which party you are a member of.
People just what someone they can trust, and Joyce's resume speaks volumes.

Yes they do...
Yes they do, in cities and towns that have partisan politics.
However, in my city, they have non partisan elections. Don't be fooled!
Even then, you must play a good hand...

Daryl, go away. I don't need your help!
Joyce, I'm not on here for your benefit!
If you don't want to listen, then don't! skip over my post... but, please read this first...
I will continue to critique on campaigns, such as yours, in an effort to train the others, here on Daily Paul. That being, how to develop a winning campaign! by using proven and time tested campaign logic and techniques.
Sorry, if I ruffled your feathers in a bad way. The point being, that we have few to little resources here on this site to devote to campaigns that will not or have slim chance of winning.
I was one of the original campaign architects, that wrote the strategy for the take-over of the republican party, by we Ron Paul R3volutionaries.
The real hero's of that campaign were all those that sacrificed, read, studied and showed up on every game day. We mounted a winning
campaign strategy, and caught the party off guard! Winning strategies work!
If we keep rebuilding the republican party, we will gain control of a majority of all local city and town committees, we can only do that, if we present a united front.
One last comment, if you continue on your path as a Libertarian (I consider myself one as well) but in doing so, and you lose badly, you may forever damage your opportunity to run again, in effect, the other parties and the public will view you as a nice person, but of no political effect.
I hope you do prove me wrong, I truly wish you the very best of luck, because you are one of the Doctors followers and a fellow, Daily-Pauler, and for that, you deserve credit for trying!
My apologies for starting out on the wrong foot! :)

Hijack the GOP thread
Goes a lot into what you've been talking about here. I'd be curious if you had any thoughts on this.

Run Republican, but not GOP style republican.

The forum you link to is too dark,
too different from your sunny Web page. I would skip that link.
Your Web page content and format needs work. You need short position bullet points so people can see something they like about your stands in three seconds.
List your experience, but not together with your positions.
For how long have you been attending local government meetings? If not at all, why are you running? This may sound like a challenge but I am trying to help.
New Hampshire and Ecuador
thanks
I've been attending and out in the streets for the last 15 months. I've been on every issue they've presented including traffic cameras most recently. Thank you for your constructive criticism. I will revise in bullet style like you suggested and change my forum theme.
More suggestions
Switch to Helvetica or similar sanserif font (like you have on your tabs) for the body. It will be easier to read on the monitor, just opposite of the rule for newsprint and books.
Combine and distill related bullet points till you wind up with three. You can do this. There is a fair amount of redundancy now among them. I'm not kidding when I say they need to see what you're about in three seconds. One thing you can do to condense is delete "I will." That will be understood. This is almost like designing a roadside sign so someone can read it while they're whizzing past in their car.
See what you can do about using a color photo of yourself (unless you are naturally gray of course ;-) More people will decide if they like you from your photo than from your positions so you might as well maximize the impact with a very nice photo. (You look pleasant and likable by the way.)

good luck! We need more
good luck! We need more people to get active like this.... It's up to us to change things/enact our ideas... we can't wait around or rely on the politicians who are currently in office.
If I was old enough and not busy in college, and in a more permanent place of residence, I'd try and be more active and maybe run for something small/local.
Best of luck Joyce!

It makes way more sense to run in the Republican Party. If everyone was running in a third party it would ensure our defeat. There is nothing the establishment people would want more than for us to leave the Republican Party alone. I think it makes more sense to follow Ron Paul's lead. The CFL has a very definite plan and he's had a lot of success so far. I don't see any reason to abandon Paul's strategy at this point.
Register as Republican and Vote for Ron Paul
Paul ran as a Libertarian
There is a lot of strategy behind this. My city has a huge number of Independents. Most are as a result of the split of the Republican party. Nobody, and I mean nobody can give advice unless they first ask questions about the city in question to get a feel for what it's like. If you aren't asking questions but rather throwing angry remarks of my failure I'm not listening. Every city is unique. This isn't my first campaign, but it's my first personal campaign. Every race I have helped with got raving reviews for a clean fair campaign.
I hoped I would get moral support here. I expected more from DPer's. Instead of telling me I made a party choice mistake, how about asking why I did what I did. Questions not answers first. Then when you have intelligently assessed my strategy then offer advice. You come off as haters rather than true intellectuals. If you can't bring anything to the table, please keep it to yourself.
Joyce
We are not attacking you, we are trying to help you.
If you look at my previous remarks, you will see that I did ask questions.
But, you have not answered them. This group shakes out the blanket, no fuzzy flippers, just a training (boot) camp.
Please don't be angry. Your inexperience is telling, (it's not intended as an insult) (you are inexperienced, just a statement of fact). I do not have to know anything about your city. It's not as unique as you think, none are. Campaign Issues come into play later.
The battle is still the same. You must get 50% plus one vote in order to win. The other poster is right, when you run as a republican you already have a built in base to start building your 50%.
Your battling with your opponents to get the remaining (independent voters)
I do like you. If you want to be elected, you must stick with your base, Libertarians have none.
That means if you run against your opponent as a Libertarian, you may get 1% of the total base for libertarians, but your Democrat and Republican opponents will have a 30% to 40% base to start with.
Do the math. Your are already at a huge numerical disadvantage, you and your opponents are all trying to get the remaining independent voters!
If you run in a party, and are lucky enough to force a primary, you can very likely split the party vote and win enough independent voters, to win the primary, thus give you a bump in the poles...
I can't write a campaign plan on this forum, but I can give you much needed advice on how to win. If you are stubborn and proceed on your present course, you will loose. I will do everything to help you win, but, I will not waste my time helping you in a campaign that is doomed from the start.
Do you have a purged voting list, if so, from what year? do you have one for the primary, and the general? do you know what a purged voting list is?
