HI-JACKING the GOP
Hi Guys
I've seen some threads about this for a while, and many people seem to think our goal should be to hijack the GOP to a libertarian group. I think that is what Ron attempted the last election cycle.
I guess the question at this point is whether many of us believe the GOP is destroyed and even has a future if it was to be hi-jacked?
I've thought long and hard about this. Have any of you seen the Jefferson Republican party? It would need a lot of work but would create all-out confusion on the ballot. You'd have a candidate claiming to be a republical (GOP) and another candidate calling themselves a republican (Jefferson Republican Party).
I think from a marketing perspective this would be much easier than running as a libertarian, even though the JRP supports the majority of the libertarian party platform. It supports the original Jefferson democrat-republican party platform which Jefferson wrote.
I'm curious to see what you guys think. I've been asked to by Noah Cooke to head up a JRP here in California which is why I would like some input. It would seem this method in terms of marketing would make leaps and bounds over the traction the LP has had in the election cycles over the last 40 years.

the second page about ballot access for 3rd parties. The problem is that even though you DO see 3rd parties on the ballot at times, you also need to realize that they were made to jump through numerous hoops just to BE on the ballot by collecting thousands of signatures. Democrats and Republicans have such a monopoly that they get on the ballot AUTOMATICALLY! :-( Double standard as usual...

small town mayor idea
i need to put a little more research in but i live in a small town that w/ three weekends i could cover a door to door campaign and take this election cheap. my neighbors have always been receptive to my knowledge of the constitution and platform would be a strict adherence to it. not sending or receiving a payment of taxes to the federal or state level that has unconstitutional laws . using a direct democratic approach to vote on budget and subcontracting the town workloads to local citizens w/ the ability and lowest price. return to gold and silver based banking . no sales tax ,no property tax , no taxes. school aged children's parents pay school tax reduce all expenses to bare minimum no salary for town officials just to redefine "public service" . people are receptive now and more aware than ever before of the perils that will plague us if we continue down a corrupt path of self destruction. this could work and spread to other small towns casting off our self imposed shackles and declaring that small town america can take care of itself. any ideas.

It sounds like you have an opportunity to be mayor with a vote on the city council. Run run run!
First get elected (mayor or member of council).
2nd build support on the council.
3rd slowly phase in a few of your ideas over time.
I did 1, and am working on 2 and 3.
First step is to get elected. Don't alienate or spout too much. Get elected and start making the change. We can do this. You can do this. Make it happen!

does the mayor have such power? All these things are pretty complicated. The school board sets the school tax; the city council sets the property tax. The mayor is pretty much a figure head who can break a tie on council.
You could campaign to cut the budget for spending on contracts and employees, but that is done by a finance committee on council. I would run for that instead.

Is the only way to start that. I don't know how people will react to payments in gold, that might be taking it a bit too far.
Now, if you were to start paying in gold bullion they would welcome it. They would only pay taxes on the face value of the bullion, not the amount it contains in gold.
I remember reading something about this and the IRS was pissed to say the least.

Perot did astonishingly well...
Considering he had no political experience, no PLATFORM, no established third party base to mobilize-and he still nearly got 20% of the vote.
This despite the fact that he was a short man with a squeaky voice, very marginal charisma, not a whole heck of a lot of political education---and he quit his campaign in the middle of the race!
Perot had a lot of money and he used it. It worked remarkably well.
With a truly dynamic candidate, who knows what he (or she) believes in and forcefully articulates the Constitution, a third party could capture the White House. All it takes is money. With money, there's nothing a third party could not do.

You're forgetting something
Third party candidates do well in elections in which it's time to divide the vote of the party currently occupying the White House so the other party can take over. For example, John Anderson in 1980 was even allowed in the debates because it was known he would take votes from Carter, not Reagan, and so having Anderson around helped pave to way for Reagan and a party change. In 1992, Ross Perot was likely to draw away votes from the Elder Bush, not Bill Clinton, so he was allowed to do well, too.
At the national level, there's no two party system, there's only a single party, the outcome of the presidential election is determined beforehand and the elections are rigged if they need to be. Creating a third party won't force a multiple party system. The only solution is to educate people to see through these games so they don't blindly cooperate, and we can do that no matter which party we work within.

I am starting to wonder if we just need to do both. HiJack the GOP and start a new republican movement with something like the JRP.
Then find a dynamic candidate with money, or one who can raise money. I think the key here is getting money early on. This means an early run so that come primary time this candidate is well heard of. I am concerned that Dr. Paul isn't going to run in 2012.
I'm sure that in 2012 or even 2010 more people are going to start looking for alternatives.

I would like to point out that there are many good folks in the
Republican Party (and I am sure the Democratic Party) that are just as disgusted as we are at the games being played and we can work with them.

lots of mustard seeds on this thread. I'm hoping someone can take some of these ideas for hi-jacking the GOP and see how successful it can be. Has anyone already done this in 2008 successfully?
One thing I can tell you for sure is that we need to raise funds. Maybe we can raise funds under the JRP for these activities? We can easily raise more funds being 'Republicans' than Libertarians in most of the US. In fact, you could probably build a large base of Jefferson Republicans with some telemarketing from the registered GOP.

As I go merrily hacking away, I find I am amazed at how well oiled it all is. It is this well oil system that has let us slide RIGHT UP there.
Its so very ....EASY. Wear the "R" loudly and proudly. Yet, be a "L". Strangely they...THEY do not know the difference.
It reminds me of some Nova Nature program on ants. Ants "wear" a particular smell, and that is how they decide if you are "in" the colony (friend) or "out" of the colony (enemy). Some ant predators are so clever that they simply mimic the ant "in colony" smell and eat away as ants just mill about their merry business, even helping the ant-smelling invader. That's how it is at every local GOP State function. Ask a question, "Can have access to all the States Registered Republicans? I know a 'good R' who wants to run for office and I want to help this 'good R' out" Answer: "Oh sure, just contact Cindy and she will set you up on our computer data base" -- Swing!
Another way to look at it is Sports Team mentality. Once upon a time the Dastardly Shaq played basketball for the LA Lakers, and Phoenix fans hated him, boo, boo, Shaq. Today, the Shaq is playing basketball for Phoenix Suns and the locals love to scream, Shaq! Shaq!... (you see he is wearing the little Sun Logo on his shirt--- Team Mentality.
This TEAM MENTALITY is all what the "R" and the "D" is about.
Not so with the Libertarians. Like the good doctor, we are all about IDEAS, FREEDOM IDEAS. Liberty is our North Star and like a compass needle, we do not waver.
So my fellow DP'rs... YES!!! YES!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The GOP is totally hijack-able. Hell you know the NeoCons did it in 1980 and where busy setting new policies in place by the end of Reagan's second term. They even had the balls to rewrite Reagan's Foreign policy history -- you know He who controls the past, controls the future...
Anyway, for those of you not at HOME in the GOP, go try the DNC.

Because we do not have to "play politics"...We know where our North Star is, and so the fun (and amazing part) of it is, is how all the other little R's just treat you so swell, never ask any questions as long as you are "For the Party of R". What the party of R is, or what the Party of D is, is of little consequence, like Shaq playing for the LA Lakers one year, then playing for the Phoenix Suns. He is still SHAQ, yet the Fans are so full of that TEAM MENTALITY that for them, in the end, platform positions are just players, to be used, traded, and put back on the bench. Obama used the team player called MAKE PEACE NOT WAR, now he has benched him. Bush in 2000 running for election also used a team player called, A HUMBLE FOREIGN POLICY along with another team player, OUT OF BOSNIA NOW. Well as you know, as soon as Bush got the Presidents job, he benched both players immediately, he had other goals for TEAM R you see. For the D's and R's, that is called, "Playing Politics".
For you and me, we call that being a Sell Out and we belch.
But do not worry, the NEOCONS have shown us all the way. Just be yourself. That is right, just be yourself and yet, WEAR the R or D Team Jersey. Let the TEAM MENTALITY to do the rest. You saw that work with liberal voting McCain, certainly not a conservative at all, yet Team Mentality Kicked right in come election time.
Lets face it. We will NEVER have enough L's in this world. So few of us have supper large families! Most people if asked, why are you a Dallas Cowboy fan or why are you a Democrat, the real answer is, My Family was one so I was born into it. There you go, there will never EVER be enough Libertarians or L's to grow our base. Plain and simple. Even if every Libertarian female got married at the age of 16 and proceeded to have her humanly full capacity of children, we could never EVER catch up to the amount of Ds and Rs born out there every year after year. We are way too far behind.
So YES, hijacking the GOP is the ONLY way to go. No I take that back, It is one way to go. The other way is to hijack the DNC. Infact we really should do BOTH.
Hijack both! And why not? If you were running for State Governor on the DNC team and I running on the GOP team, who wins? Answer: LIBERTY wins!
Liberty wins when we play BOTH sides against each other.
WAKE UP DP'rs... that is what Big Govt does, it plays both teams D's and R's to Grow itself. Butter and Guns. Welfare and Warfare. The choices are stacked, the game is rigged.

It's NOT going to work
During the campaign, I traveled a 400 mile radius to attend Ron Paul Meetups. I turned down a well deserved job with Ralph Nader's campaign to help Ron Paul. In the Meetups I attended the GOP did one thing, in Mendocino, Sonoma, Humbolt, Trinity, Lake Counties, and I can go on with reports from others, who witnessed the same thing, NO ONE not one registered Republican who started a Meetup was ever asked to be a delegate, and anyone who tried was sabotaged by Ron's campaign!!!!
Where I live, we have legalized medical marijuana, we have 26 peace groups, we have fishing, lumber, mining corproations.. seems perfect for GOP... I don't know what's going on, but I do know that the GOP here works very hard to keep the Democrats in office and while I thought during the election, like many others from this area, supporting Ron Paul's campaign would help us turn this area from Red to Blue... there was no help... from the campaign.
And yet, in Reno NV, the Ron Paul campaign was very active passing out signs and being involved with Meetups. Those of us who were left out know who we are. We live in an area where Democrats and Republicans are married to each other and they use the parties to control the population. It's why we have so many Independents registered here. And I believe Independence is THE WAY for humans.. corporations need the GOP, I don't.

In my state we were strongly encouraged to take the seats and get to the state convention. For those willing to walk/phone, the tools were available.

Go to your State Party website and read the State By-Laws.
Each state is somewhat different, but they all do have to conform to the Republican National By-Laws. There are also election laws to be considered, but the State Party regulars really don't give a RIP if they follow the election laws, and they manage to bull their way to do what they want, as in Nevada!
Enough of us becoming involved and playing the game---holding them to ethical standards to follow the rules, and we can have success.
If each one of us has the intestinal fortitude to stand up to our state party as Ron Paul stands up in congress, and we can be successful.

Our Elephant Photo should have 3 STARS POINTED UP instead of pointed Down like the current GOP elephant.
Can you imagine sticking a Jefferson Republican sign with 3 upwards pointing stars outside the polling booth right next to the GOP elephant with downward stars.
Maybe people would take notice and vote for the Jefferson Republicans just because of the GOP's satanic looking inverted stars.

I'd have no problem having a party run in a certain district who is financially supported by the JRP and who is endorsed by the JRP.
Fundraising as a republican would be much easier than LP.
