is anyone else growing weary of the personal attacks?
Submitted by sunny on Mon, 02/23/2009 - 10:48
i find myself coming here less and less because of the childish
battles going on between posters.
who cares if you slide by and completely ignoring what michael has posted in the guidelines?
who cares if you show michael nystrom no respect?
right?
you know who you are and it's just getting old.
if you have a beef with someone please just e them personally.
this kid in a sandbox routine is pitiful!

What am I going to post then?
Geez--If I'm not putting somebody down--then I'm out of DP business...Darn.

Great point, Sunny
We will all at some time disagree with someone. The key is to not personalize the disagreement. Name-calling, profanity, etc. is no way to discuss/argue your point of view. Everyone here is no doubt a pleasant, easy to deal with person when they are not on the computer. ;)

I am one of the moderators
.
Sometimes I will delete a comment if it's way off base. I ususally check with Michael on this, and it's usually only for the more inflammatory stuff.
But you have a point. And yet, the forum allows all views, even stupid ones. But if they are mean, or name-calling or just pointless, then they get zapped.
So
Are you following the guidelines or basically just using your own judgment?
I'd like to hear you define "pointless."
"It's just one big club... and WE ain't in it!"
"Tyrants fear nothing more than insubordination"
"It's just one big club... and WE ain't in it!"
Guidelines
.
I follow the guidelines. Michael and I and, at one point, Jane Aitken, discussed this. If a post is 'iffy' then it stands. If it's abusive, or racist, or has a lot of profanity, then it goes. Again, none of the moderators do this very much. I think I zapped one comment in the past month, because it was quite over the top.
Pointless - if it coupled with mean-spiritedness - gets zapped. If there is a thread about Ron Paul being on a TV show, and someone posts "Oh look! It's snowing!" I will leave it even though it has nothing to do with the topic. But if someone posts an angry rant about, say, Muslims (which is not the topic) it will go.
But, again. I don't do it much. It has to be really bad to get deleted.
Well
about a week ago, RP was being interviewed on CNN by Kiran Chetney and I posted that "Kiran is hot, Ron Paul is great, and together they make a fantastic interview" which got dusted by a moderator. So did someone's post that replied likewise.
I was just wondering what guidelines someone used to remove that post.
"It's just one big club... and WE ain't in it!"
"Tyrants fear nothing more than insubordination"
"It's just one big club... and WE ain't in it!"
No reason for that.
.
I didn't see the post. But if it is as you describe I would have barely noticed it. It's the really bad stuff - name-calling, racial or ethnic slurs, profanity.
There was one poster last year... I forget his name now, but he was just a foul-mouthed sewer that got his kicks posting extremely incendiary stuff. The guy was nuts. His posts were so numerous and unrelenting that we couldn't keep up! As soon as we had deleted something, he was back again, calling us vile names and screaming censorship. This is Michael's site, and we basically help him out. Anyhow, Michael banned the guy from ever logging in again. We sighed with relief.
Anyhow it doesn't happen much anymore. I am happy about that. Yes, we have spirited discussions and there is some mild name calling ("You don't know anything, you stupid idiot!") but it's part of the process and needs to be left alone. Sometimes it's correct.
Tell you what really annoys me (but which I can't delete)... is when someone makes a sweeping generalization that is just wrong. Such as, "All liberals are communist pinko nut jobs!" It has to be left alone, since it's the poster's opinion and doesn't have any profanity. But it's just stupid. There's a lot of that, but not as much as before thank goodness.
.
Sorry, but sometimes I find it impossible...
to not respond or "attack" idiots. I hate the blanket lables, and suppositions that people place against us. They don't speak for me, and I try not to speak for others. Newbies come here I think sometimes to just stir up trouble. They make statements against DPers and our support of or against, to name a few, Dr. Paul, the Constitution, the Gold Standard, the FED, etc. Their claims are baseless, and most of the time ignorant. For these people a verbal attack should be the least of their worries. Other times I just feel the need to be a little sarcastic. Nothing personal, it's just my sense of humor. I think debate is good. I don't mind the name calling, as long as it is accompanied with a good response to the issue at hand. I have offered to continue conversations via email on more than one occasion, and have only had one taker. Thank you Hannah. Though we didn't agree on the issue, we agreed that our support of Dr. Paul, and liberty was more important than our disagreement. As a matter of fact, I don't even remember the specifics of the disagreement-had something to do with banking. Anyway,
just my two cents, for what it's worth.
Judging from the response to the
attack on Kevin, most of us agree with you Sunny. Thanks for your positive efforts.

Just Listen to Ron Paul
The people who are adrift here just need to listen harder to Ron Paul. If you are promoting something here that is divisive, chances are it's because Ron Paul himself doesn't support that position. If people would just stop promoting things that Ron Paul himself doesn't promote, we would be a lot more unified in our goals.
What does Ron Paul support?
- More freedom
- Free Markets
- Less government spending
- Less regulations
- Less taxes
- Banning the Fed
- Sound money
- Getting congressmen and senators elected (the ultimate goal of the CFL)
Register as Republican and Vote for Ron Paul
Good for you Sunny!
I have been feeling like DP is DEAD for sometime now. Haven't posted much lately for that and many other reasons; but I too am sick of the attacks, BS and general lack of quality here lately.
Now with that said, I do enjoy the good stuff here and there is some, but lately it is less and less.

without the volatility
it would be difficult to tell who the flakes are.
there are some fantastic people on this forum.
then there are a few that are just poor thinkers AND prodigious posters....which is a bad combo. i have most of the screen names memorized that fall at the edges of the spectrum.
when scanning a thread I tend to read the posts by the names I value, and tend to go out of my way to not read the posts by the known seriously misguided miscreants.
usually the first sentence or two of a post is telling.
thanks for saying it, sunny

It's an obvious Divide & Conquer strategy.
To tell you the truth, I figured the other poster who started the *other* thread was just jealous. I'm sure it wasn't easy (I don't know if I could have taken it) but Kevin stood there and reflected the hits.
Yes ... after all that heat ... the dude abides

Thanks.
I'm still here...and would be here after a thousand posts like that.
