ROTHSCHILD - On September 14, 2001 President Bush issued a "Declaration of National Emergency by Reason Of Certain Terrorist Attacks," and "the continuing and immediate threat of further attacks on the United States." The federal use of Wisconsin Guard soldiers in Iraq was allowed under the 2002 authorization of the use of force in Iraq. But, the justification for that permission—the threat from the state of Iraq and the need to enforce United Nations resolutions—has since expired, explains Jim Maas, Chair of the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin.

“Iraq was defeated. It was not and is not a threat to the United States. No matter what you might believe about the Iraq War, the occupation is not an ‘emergency,” contends Maas. Wisconsin legislation is in the works to bring our Guard. However, Libertarians believe Governor Doyle should be demanding the Guard stay to protect Wisconsin’s homeland, not waving goodbye.

Activating members of the Guard has many disruptive consequences, on individuals, families, communities, and businesses, not to mention local Guard units themselves. Libertarians are concerned for Guard members being snatched away from classes, jobs or families to serve halfway around the world and may result in undesirable consequences for Wisconsin.

The Secretary of Defense should go to war with the Army he has. Wisconsin National Guard units belong in Wisconsin, to protect our Homeland, insists Ed Thompson, former Libertarian candidate for governor. “The governor of Wisconsin has a responsibility to watch out for our citizens and the Guard members for which he is responsible. In the interests of Wisconsin’s ‘homeland security’, Governor Doyle should tell the Secretary of Defense that Wisconsin Guard members belong in Wisconsin.

Hooray for the Libertarian Party

Hooray for the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin. It is time that states start to really support their neighbors sent to fight in unwinnable wars. I am glad to read of Ed Thompson again. He was a great candidate for Governor.

How many really believe....

The National Guard of wisconsin would actually be on their side when the rubber meets the road? I suppose most of them could....then again Katrina showed otherwise.

Where are all the state's righters and defenders of the Articles of Confederation?

How come threads on state and local issues never go anywhere in this forum?

PS - Ed Thompson is the brother of Tommy Thompson. Ed is a potential presidential candidate in 2012.
