Looking for a Survivalist Book

Does anyone out there have any recommendations on a book, or books, that will give me ideas and tips to best prepare my family for the worst?

Backwoods Home Magazine

This is a fictional story but packed with all kinds of things you would need.
This book opens about what the current course this Country is on even though this was written awhile ago. A must read !!

I would also recommend Patriots:Surviving the Coming Collapse as well.

It is a great blueprint as to how and save, store, defend and sometimes destroy.

Books by Mel Tappan are great as well.

The subtitle is "everything you need to know to subsist in the wilderness" This book is pretty good. It talks about building shelters tracking animals, reading the weather, edible plants, fishing, trapping, knots, first aid, dangerous animals and poisonous snakes and cooking with recipes. its about 500 pages with 1,000 illustrations. it says "from the editors of Stackpole Books"

An all around good book with realistic survival plans for urban dwellers. Most of the information will transfer readily for folks in the country.

Bottom line on this thread is to educate yourselves and then pull your collective thoughts if the need arises.

but the Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery is an exhaustive do it yourself book. Everything from giving birth by yourself, building a mud oven, butchering, preserving food, beekeeping, making candles, keeping your house warm, etc. I'm constantly referring to it.

I was thinking of that one too.

If it teaches you to raise food, though, it definitely is a survival book!

Depending on how militant you are planning on getting there are thousands of books available on the net for expedient (and not so expedient but more refined) homemade firearms and explosives.

(I'm talking living like Native Americans did) I recommend Tom Brown. He has a few different books out and they are 'easy to carry along' paperbacks too.

He's just an actor with a whole crew following him around all the time. They even have an actual "survivalist" with them to tell him what to say and make sure he doesn't do anything too stupid.

Les Stroud (Survivorman) is much better. He goes out for 7 days with practically nothing but the clothes on his back all by himself. He even sets up the cameras by himself (making it that much more difficult to survive). And since the OP was asking for books, he has one of those out too. I think it's called Survive! Also of interest, there's a ducumentary with him setting up a homestead off the grid up in Northern Canada. Not sure what it's called, but it's probably a good resource too.

His survival techniques parallel those of Tom Brown that I mentioned above.. Many of the techniques he utilizes are taught in Tom Brown's guides. Often enough for me to bet that he has been influenced by Tom Brown's books on occasion.

The web is full of stuff. Also Alex Jones' many sites have some survivalist stuff, including links to storable food, how to get water from the air, and other items.

The recommendation of the Foxfire books is excellent also, if you want a book. There's a lot of stuff out there - you just have to look.
