Is Krav Maga the best fighting style?

0 votes

I'm going to start learning some form of disciplined self defense, and I think the best one to learn would be Krava Maga. Does anyone have any suggestions which fighting style would be better to learn?

I'm 24, strong, and I want to be able to put people on their backs if the time comes... :)

Get Prepared!

It is very clear, you have never seen real combat

perhaps a couple school fights, at a club, etc. Never life and death. Big difference. MMA does not prepare you for taking someone's life, eye, biting off their nose, etc. That's where you better be when fighting for your life, not scoring points, or tapping someone out. That mindset takes training. That's why soldiers train that way and not only MMA.

MMA is a sport

it's fun. It does not train people to survive real street attacks. That requires unique mental training. That's why real warriors drill combatives. Their training prepares them to react to the life and death situations they find themselves in. Again, the difference is more mental then physical. Take a look around and see how many REAL warriors use only MMA to prepare themselves for combat. NONE. They would die. Look fella, MMA is cool, it's fun, I like wearing tights once and awhile and rolling around with other guys, I get it. MMA does not prepare you correctly for life and death situations. The mental and physical state you are in under this kind of intense stress is much different. That is a fact. Period. Here is a great link to Tony Blauer training FRANK MIR before his big fight with Nog.

Krav Maga

Yes, krav maga will definitely let you do that. You do not even have to be big to do it. Besides Systema, Krav Maga is probably the best "non-ballet" self defense out there...on top of that, Krav Maga is the best work out I have ever done in my life.

left hook

Your best bet is going to your local mma gym. It will give you a very good introduction into the fighting arts. You should be able to put on some safty training gloves and do some boxing as well. It's a good place to see if you have the chin to move on to other striking disciplins.

I have started to call family and friends. I am asking them to donate $25 for my Christmas gift. If we can all do this we will raise a bunch more money.

I've studied several

I've studied several different martial arts and the one I liked the most was aikido. Really good self defense based on using the attackers force and motion against himself. Might not be for you, but at least check it out.

The best fighting style

would be the one that emphasizes good trigger control.......I don't plan on going hand to hand...I would put your "style" in this order rifle,pistol,knife....reload.

MUAY THAI

Dude you should check out Muay Thai [Thai Fist]. Its the sickest. Brutal stuff.

Focuses on the strikes using the strongest parts of the body.
Fists, feet, elbows, knees, forearms, shins.

Here's highlights of Tony Jaa, a true MASTER. The clips used in this compilation are from his movies "Ong Bak" and "Tom Yum Goong" a.k.a. "The Protector".

Tony Jaa doesn't use any wires for the stunts in his films, which sets him apart from other martial arts performers.

Enjoy!!

I highly recommend watching "Ong Bak" and "The Protector" in their entirety!

Tony Jaa

You won't be able to do what Tony Jaa does even if you took Muay Thai. In Thailand they kick trees to crack their bones and their bones then let them heal over and over to become as dense as a baseball bat. Like you know how you tear muscle to make it bigger? Its the same concept but with bones. To become as good as Tony you need to literally go through hell. Sure basic Muay Thai is great but you wont be flying through the air and breaking helmets unless you train the traditional way. Tony Jaa was a bad ass ring fighter before he was picked up for movies, because in rural Thailand to make money you either go into Muay Thai and fight for money (possibility of dying at least in Muay Boran) or you get your penis chopped off and become a transsexual show boy/girl. But yeah Muay Thai is fun I went to Thailand to mess around with it. I suggest grappling like Judo and some form of boxing that way you can hold your own on your feet and take your opponent down and man handle them on the ground.

Hell yeah

Instructor

1st question is really, what state are you in and what area? The main thing that matters is the instructor you have. Could be the best art in the world, and if the instructor blows, you're scrooged.

I'd recommend these points:

1. If you aren't getting hit, leave and go somewhere where you are. People freeze when they get hit if they aren't used to pain, and you need to learn to deal with it.
2. If they spend more time dissing Tae Kwon Do than teaching you techniques, it's time to leave. The same goes for the discussing the water theory.
3. The more time you spend active vs listening to theory, the better. Your body needs to learn this, for the most part your mind can shut up while your body works through it.

What area are you in? We've all here probably dealt with different instructors, and we may have someone to recommend in your area.

krav maga isnt the best

learning to box is number 1. wrestling.grappling number 2. boxing teaches you to take a punch as well as land. most street fights turn to the ground. forget arm bars and submissions.

That's a myth

Most street fights don't turn to the ground. Most street fights end up with the person who's just been knocked down being kicked a lot while they're on the ground. Not the same thing. Grappling is great for conditioning but the only techniques you need to learn for ground fighting are (a) how to avoid being taken down (b) how to defend yourself if you are on the ground and most importantly (c) how to quickly and effectively get back to your feet without eating a foot to the face while you're doing so.

Boxing is a good thing to learn, but more for mechanics than anything else. It teaches the bad habit of striking with a closed fist though. If you punch someone in the head with a closed fist you stand a really good chance of breaking your hand or cutting it really badly on their teeth. Strike to the body with a fist, strike to the head an open hand.

depending on the size of the city you live in...

it's quite possible there's a mixed martial arts gym near you that doesn't advertise. so you might want to ask around.

i've been training in mma for about 2 months now. i'm 5'9" and 214 lbs which is mostly muscle. now i'll admit i'm still getting my ass handed to me by guys that are only 160lbs, but they've been training for years. but i know that if i were to fight somebody on the street who had no training i'd be a handful for them. luckily i've always kept my mouth shut and haven't been in a fight in 14 years.

there are at least 3 guys who fight in the UFC that train there on a regular basis. it's just an old warehouse with mats from front to back and a cage in the corner. but unless i had a buddy who actually fights professionally on the local level i'd never know this place existed.

we don't focus on one area. one day we'll do either Muay Thai, jiu jitsu, boxing or some freestyle wrestling takedowns.

whatever martial art you choose i suggest making sure it includes some ground skills.

It's alway's good to learn a fighting skill.........

But it may be a good idea to mix different one's up....Like boxing , ground frighting, aikido,jujitsu....I train in Ninpo, aka Ninjutsu......Genbukan system is a form of Ninjutsu I study in, (links to this art below) ...My teacher is in the video with the "The twelve locks"....Enjoy and good luck.
