For the Pot Heads

Pot Head definition: "A Habitual user of Marijuana, usually to the point where it interferes with work, family, and school. Pot heads are known for their laid-back attitude, bad memory, encyclopedic knowledge of junkfood, and facination with shiny objects."

Did you ever wonder why you get high ? What smoking marijuana is doing to your little brain ? http://www.nida.nih.gov/infofacts/marijuana.html

"How Does Marijuana Affect the Brain?

Scientists have learned a great deal about how THC acts in the brain to produce its many effects. When someone smokes marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout the body.

THC acts upon specific sites in the brain, called cannabinoid receptors, kicking off a series of cellular reactions that ultimately lead to the “high” that users experience when they smoke marijuana. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors; others have few or none. The highest density of cannabinoid receptors are found in parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thoughts, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.1

Not surprisingly, marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Research has shown that marijuana’s adverse impact on learning and memory can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off.2 As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a suboptimal intellectual level all of the time.

Research on the long-term effects of marijuana abuse indicates some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term abuse of other major drugs. For example, cannabinoid withdrawal in chronically exposed animals leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system3 and changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine.4 Dopamine neurons are involved in the regulation of motivation and reward, and are directly or indirectly affected by all drugs of abuse."

Hey

What's the point in spewing propaganda? All this stuff is exaggerated or false.

I indulge in smoking cannabis every day, its a lot healthier than drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco. It never impaired my education, I got a degree in 4 years.

If you haven't tried it yet, you should. Nothing like burning one down and revising history via LRC, DP & Mises. :)

The so called "definition" of pot head is extremely lame

I have recreationally used pot for over 35 years.

I am not laid back, I do not have a bad memory, I do not eat junk food, and shiny objects do not fascinate me. I also have 3 normal kids.

Practically everything I do requires good physical and mental acuity. I ski, I ride a bicycle, I am a competetive runner, an engineer and a musician. I have produced 3 CDs of original music, I hold several patents, and I enjoy crossword puzzles.

The author of this article is an idiot.

Let potheads be pothead if they so choose.

Like Dr. Paul just reiterated the other day.. as long as they don't hurt anyone else or come around with their hand out after they f*ck up their lives.

Look down on them if you choose...truthfully, I'd think less of a habitual pot smoker just like I would of a habitual drunkard. It's not the product being abused I object to, it's their lack of sobriety I find disheartening.

Everyone likes to pull a cork every once in a while. Some, even more often. When it starts interfering with your daily life, then you've got a problem.

But only you.

Wow. The first paragraph is nothing but stereotypes and disprove statements. I don't even know where to begin.

First off, I'm honestly laughed out loud when you posted a NIDA study. How much research have you EVER done on NIDA? What do you know about NIDA? That link has about as much credibility as you posting a study from the drug companies saying why vitamins are bad for your health.

NIDA stipulations REQUIRE that the company RESIST REFORM EFFORTS AT ALL COSTS.

Additionally, NIDA and ONDCP have been given permission to lie to the public regarding the true health consequences of marijuana:
http://www.commondreams.org/news2004/0312-06.htm

A very well regarded medical organization determined that heavy marijuana use doesn't cause any form of damage to the brain, which, contradicts the government propaganda that you posted.
http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/news/20030701/heavy-marij...

Furthermore, marijuana use may actually prevent tumor growth:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,266715,00.html

But all of that is irrelevant and has been throughly debated before. It is very well established that marijuana use is much safer that alcohol use and has fewer medical side effects. This is old news.

What we should be debating is weather or not the drug war is effective. We have been fighting this drug war for 100 years now and the only thing we have to show for it is (1) more, harder drugs (2) increased potency (3) larger distribution across all of America (4) drug profits line the pockets of dealers who have no qualms with selling to your kid outside of his school (5) had done NOTHING to stem the flow of drugs.

Marijuana is now the nations LEADING cash crop over Corn and Wheat
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?id=2735017&page=1

Economists have predicted that repealing marijuana laws could save approximately 6 billion a year in enforcement and would create an additional 16 billion (with figures reaching as far as 30 billion) in tax revenue each year. Not to mention reduce the size of the prisons which are ALL over crowded, due to the drug war.

I can't imagine why you would spew your government laced 'reefer maddness' propaganda without having any REPUTABLE documentation to back up your claims on a site like this unless you are just trying to spark a heated debate.

Why don't you smoke some

Why don't you smoke some weed and find out for yourself if it's all that bad.

Marijuana is legal where I live

I'm going to address your forum topic by telling you that I live in California's Emerald Triangle, where medical marijuana is legal. Matter of fact, my county is famous for selling organic grapes, redwood timber, dungess crab, rock fish and salmon, (abalone) mushrooms, and all those industries do not add up to the $14 Billion in medical marijuana revenue. The state in illegal grows is worth $400 billion.

CA taxpayers pay $35K per prisioner annually, unless that prisoner is sick, and then taxpayers spend $125K per prisoner. Not only that, but the costs of courts, bail, the whole prison process is very expensive.. so when the state imprisons sick people at a 70% rate, then the prison system is breaking the taxpayers. Marijuana prohibition did not make us safer. It made a war zone, a prison state, and under policed service.

Here in the Emerald Triangle, not many people talk about our area to outsiders (they might want to come here, but I'm a Ron Paul junkie and welcome Ron Paul supporters because they get it better than the majority), we have more voters per capita in the state. Our town meetings, board of supervision meetings, council meetings are packed, our news paper letters to the editors are much like the Daily Paul, from FEMA camps to Barry Dunham AKA Obama, to Seed and Scion swaps, to ending the war to this subject, and it appears the local government and armed authorities are on the side of the farmers, doctors, caregivers, patients and activists, in there are much bigger badder crimes to address than sick people smoking pot at $125K per pop (actually it's $1,250,000.00 per, because of the ten year mandetory minimum!).

While I watch America crumble, that is not what is happening in the Emerald Triangle. In many ways it is as if we had seceded from the US long ago... in 1996 when CA passed proposition 215 Medical marijuana by 56%. In many ways it is like Mayberry RFD here. I don't lock my doors, trucks, or guns and my property value has increased.

Of course, we still have issues to work out, but honestly, if we can just get the USA to legalize ALL cannabis... all the new industries and opportunities is very exciting. To add todays technology to cannabis, that was banned because it beat the competition in the first place, oil, corn, tobacco, lumber (wood pulp), cotton, hemp CAN provide food, fiber, feed and fuel. This is a rEVOLution! I think we're going to need it.

What we don't need is white refined sugar, which is a drug, as it stimulates a "rush", has no nutritional value, is related to tooth decay, diabetes, obesity and is highly addictive. Thats what we need to make illegal based on your idea of how law should control we the people (which I do not agree with you.. Ron Paul doesn't want to be my dictator and I really really like that. Don't you? hint hint.

I make an effort to check out Daily Paul because I have allot of work to do doing the day, but I think you should also know, that healthy eating is so big here, organic produce and dairy is already cheaper than anything trucked in. We have allot of pot lucks, including raw food pot lucks, vegan, and game... I am into Chinese medicine and why I am not a vegan, but an omnivore, but we have all kinds of local treats from seaweed seaseme crunch, candy cap ice cream, huckleberrys and salmon berries We have one McDonalds and a Starbucks... that's it.. everything is independent owned and operated...So I don't know about your argument. My experience does not match your warnings.

It's a freedom issue, not a health issue.

I can't see why you're even a RP supporter Sov, if you favor drug prohibition. The facts you present are not facts at all, they are BS. But it's not about health, it about freedom. Until you infringe upon another's rights, you should be free to make your own decisions about what you do with your own life, even if they are bad decisions.

Shame on you for being one of the bad guys.

Demonizing Hemp

Who cares? What other people do is not important to me if it does not infringe upon me, and when it does, I can seek common law recourse.

If we just allowed hemp to grow sans government interference:

1. The potency would drop - it is government intervention which increases the potency.

2. Global warming is solved. Hemp processes CO2 into H2O 4 to 5 times faster than any other plant.

3. As hemp has the longest molecule, it would rival carbon nanotubes in production of ruggedized products.

4. Drug warriors south of the border would have nothing to fight for.

5. More people die from arms trade than by pot (almost 0 recorded deaths per 100 million people). Yet arms trade is legal. Suggest we change our morals.

6. The CIA would lose an "angle" to "exploit"

7. Prostitution would drop.

8. Millions of ruined lives would be unruined (word?).

There's nothing wrong with marijuana HOWEVER

......the junk food and the volume of consumption is toxic. What if the negative side effects are related to poor diet?

Some people talk about the potency increase of marijuana and how dangerous that is.

Well when you push a drug underground and the laws punish more harshly on higher quantities than less -- there is a need to make more potent drugs in smaller quantities -- it's mathematical.

The potency of marijuana hadn't changed - hardly at all since colonial times (up to the 60's). You might say it's a little stronger now, on average.

White Widow Indica is said to average 20% THC content -- whereas your garden variety green weed might be as low as 3 or 4%. G13 is bragged-up on most seed purchasing sites as 25% THC.

If there is anything "dangerous" about marijuana it would be burning (altering) natures oil chemisty configuration in the smoking process and worse if there is any significant mold.

Using a vaporizer and "knowledge" a person can avoid both of these significantly.

The last argument is productivity - innovaiton - entrepreneurialism. In a "truly" free-market those that can develop this capacity most will have the greatest liberty. What effects would regular use have on "innovative-thought"

Regardless the answer I'd rather have 40 plants growing next door than this Bailout or the Federal Reserve Bank.

Yogananda - Gandhi's Guru - advised that Kriya Yoga Meditation is infinitely more potent and develops no attachment to the physical body. I follow those words of wisdom as best I can.

I think, however, if I ever fell ill -- other than fasting and potent mineralization I'd probably manage pain with "vaporized" marijuana; but not for emotional, entertainment, or stress relief. Exercise, water, good diet, and meditation are the best.

To each his own :)

Effects on the Heart from your link...
One study found that an abuser’s risk of heart attack more than quadruples in the first hour after smoking marijuana.7 The researchers suggest that such an outcome might occur from marijuana’s effects on blood pressure and heart rate (it increases both) and reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.

If this had any basis in fact I would be living in a ghost town ( Santa Cruz,Ca.) pot smokers paradise...go preach your lame govt facts and unproven fantasy statistics at politico or huffinton or malkins site.
