New CG Animation Techniques Blur the Line of Reality

http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/ar...

I remember reading about this a while back when it was being developed, but I don't think anyone posted here.

Just think in a few years if they need CG a witness, Osama, Obama, Hitler, Jesus, Ron Paul or whatever they need to put on the News.

It's going to be difficult to know the difference.

She already looks more realistic than most Hollywood actresses.

No liposuction, personal trainer, breast implants, face lift by the age of 30, Angelina Jolie collagen lips.

i'll be back... virtually!

interesting that you say that. the new terminator movie coming out is going to have arnold in it. a totally CGI arnold!

actually, making a still model isn't that difficult. modeling, displacement mapping, good texture mapping and subsurface scattering are pretty well built in to modern high end video hardware and make for some very realistic objects.

the only trouble right now is animation, which doesn't hold up as well when the objects move.

i've been doing a lot of work in using cloth simulation for anatomical models, where you model the skeleton, then anchor cloth-like muscles to it, then wrap a big mesh cloth around the whole thing like skin and use anchor weights to simulate fat, fascia, and skin mobility.

it all works very well, so now i'm working on using the movement speed of limbs to drive the elasticity of the muscles. it's odd because the animation drives the muscles, and not vice versa like in real life; so far it looks really promising!

with software like maya, zbrush, softimage, or even the free open source blender, anything is possible.

i would bet any money in ten years time (provided society doesn't collapse first), that hardware will be fast enough to simulate and render this in real time.

throw in a bit of motion

throw in a bit of motion blur, some particles and with things like FaceRobot and syflex nobody'd know the difference except for those of us with an attuned eye.

You really don't even need all of that

All you need to do is put on web cam or a youtube video and let the compression and codec with some pre processing clean up the rest.

The news already shows tons of web cam and youtube footage, so this would be completely acceptable if say CG Osama surrendered on youtube.

here's a strange idea

or better yet, motion map obama's state of the union address to a CGI osama bin laden!

"yes we can! halalalalalalalalalaaaaa!"

oh, the sick possibilities....

Wow,

that was incredible and could be used to manipulate us. Geeesh!
