An URGENT email: Jonathan Bydlak Fundraising Director RP 2008 "They need money NOW!"

November 20, 2007

During the first few days of October, we announced our fundraising goal for the fourth quarter: $12 million raised by December 31.

But there's more: we need to have spent it by then, too.

If we were to raise the entire $12 million in the last week of December, we would meet our fundraising goal for the quarter. But Ron Paul would stand little chance of winning the Republican nomination, because that money would have come in too late.

Time is of the essence. You see, we need to raise money well before we plan to spend it. That's because most of the expenditures that we make need to be paid for weeks in advance. For example, we need to buy crucial airtime for the end of December right now.

The sooner we raise this money, the sooner that we can spread Dr. Paul's message - our message - in the early primary states. Time truly is money.

Fact is, we only have about two weeks to raise money for the early primaries.

If you wait a month from now to donate, your money will only be spent after Iowa caucus-goers and New Hampshire primary voters have made up their minds.

We are rapidly running out of time. The Iowa caucus is just 44 days away. New Hampshire is in 49 days. With so much ground to make up, we can't afford to waste a single day.

As a result, we are spending faster than the rate at which we are raising money. In October alone, we raised $2.8 million, but our campaign spent over $3.1 million.

We cannot afford to wait for bursts of press activity. What we need is sustained attention in the news. What better way to do this than by continuing to raise money at a rapid pace now? We need to keep our momentum going.

Help us win in New Hampshire, Iowa, South Carolina, and Nevada.

Make your most generous contribution as soon as you can: https://www.ronpaul2008.com/donate.

maybe it was his plan to beat huck's $ bomb

he couldn't send a letter to us saying "c'mon guys, we gotta beat the huckster today."

i didn't even know huckabee had a fundraising day until i got the email from jonathan, went to dailypaul to see what everyone was saying, and then found the ronpaulgraph with the green line cathing up to the red line.

seems smart and tactical to me. if anything, by reaching the goal before the 16th (which equals more media, more coverage), the tea party bomb will be even bigger.

Yes, we do need the spam filter.

You have no idea.

The spam filter is clogged in the morning with spam.

Without the filter, every single post on the active forum topics would be viagra or some other pharmaceutical drug, or some post in Russian.

It happened a couple of times, so I started shutting down new registrations at night. Then I started getting email - "How do I register for the site?"

Maybe you don't need the spam filter, but I do.

Calm... Go ahead & donate, but don't panic either way!

Several points:

1) Current 4Q donation totals at + $8M are "ahead of" the original schedule... but recent events HAVE probably changed the need and the schedule.

2) The totals are ahead MAINLY because of the Nov 5th + $4M total. (Otherwise "regular donation" projected totals were tracking below the goal.)

3) Even though the campaign set a goal of $12 Million by the end of the year, at the time they (and many of us) felt that it was an AMBITIOUS goal, possibly reachable, possibly not. Nov5th changed their perceptions of what IS possible.

4) Changes in primary dates HAVE moved the need for money forward by several weeks; this, plus the realization that totals for 4Q could "exceed" the $12M, have raised the "bar" in their planned expenditures, and increased the need for current cash.

5) Though JB says they spent more in October ($3.1M) than was raised in October ($2.8) this of course neglects the fact that Nov5th distorted those numbers. (He is being slightly "disingenuous" in saying it -- and he knows that [grin]).

6) While they "stepped up" on spending with the TV and Radio ads, I would be VERY surprised if the campaign were "broke" (keep in mind that at end of 3Q, they had $5.4M on hand, add the $8.5M raised so far in the 4Q and you have a grand total of $13.9M raised in 3Q & 4Q).

7) Expenses in 4Q: subtract the $3.1M spent in October and you still have $10.8M. Even if Nov was DOUBLE that $6.2M (expanded staff, additional airtime, etc), there would still be $4.6M on hand.

8) But, if they want to do an addition "big buy" of airtime, they would be committing a BIG portion of that remaining $4.6M -- which would make them nervous and desirous of some additional funds as a "cushion."

9) I find the line "We cannot afford to wait for bursts of press activity. What we need is sustained attention in the news. What better way to do this than by continuing to raise money at a rapid pace now?" to be borderline hilarious, or at least ironic -- first because it is the exact opposite to his own exact reasoning via phone to me at the end of September. Next it says that despite his excellent analysis, Jon either doesn't realize that the Nov5th phenom cannot be repeated on a daily, steady basis -- OR he does understand, but sent the email (complete with hyperbole) to get a small but significant "bump" prior to an anticipated "drop" during thanksgiving.

10) The rest of the $12M, say the last $4M or $5M is not (it better not be) planned for NH and IA campaigning. If it were, then the campaign is betting "everything" in NH and IA, (and subsequently money being spent on offices for SDT, aka SuperDuperTuesday states is potentially wasteful). So, since the last $4M (indeed maybe $8M) of the $12 has to be for use with the SDT state campaigning, the TeaParty in mid-December will actually be in plenty of time to generate the cash needed for that phase 2 of the campaign. (Plus the hoped for additional fund after NH and IA results.)

11) Finally, since Huckabee was doing his "money bomb" today (and by noon he'd reached $100K) -- they may have wanted to make certain that Ron Paul raised MORE on a "normal" day than Huck could on his special day.

Finally, me writing THIS here on DailyPaul doesn't affect much of anything. Only a small % of RP donors read here, and a tiny subset will read my post. (so chill!) Just as JB's email only went to PAST donors and thus will not affect the TeaParty07 numbers by too much. (If TP07 is like Nov5th, then 2/3 of the donors will be NEW people, hence they would NOT have gotten JB's email.)

good points...

Honestly it has been a slow week. There needed to be a bump in donations this week. I think JB might be toying with people, but it is a long election. Adevrtising costs money, so better to be on the safe side and give what you can, when you can. By the time the 16th rolls around people will be geeked up to give again.

I think some frustrated people want to see some results! Dr. Paul hasn't been on TV much this week, thus minimizing the return on investment in the short term.

Wish They Would Tell Us How Much and When

I wish Mr. Bydlak would have gave us a little more info to inspire us. How much and when would be nice. I think there would be a lot less discussion today if this was given. We supporters will come through but we are not just meaningless money machines. We deserve better. I gave a little today but will hold most back until the 16th. Without more info this is all I am going to do.

Where would the fun be then...

...in yanking on everyone's chain?

[sorry sarcasm was irresistible]

Well doing some math here,

Well doing some math here, Ron had 5.3 million on hand at the end of last quarter, he has 8.7 million for this quarter. That is 14million to spend in the 13 weeks of the quarter, over a million a week.

I don't think we should move up the teaparty. If what they raised isn't enough, the campaign should take out loans on based on the estimated earnings from 12/16. Right now we have 18000 signed up, so at least 1.8 million.

it's not about our opinion

They are requesting we do it now .... which means NOW....

Look at Huckabee's "Goal"

His "goal" for November is $2 million and he's not even broken $1 million 20 days into the month. Regardless of his fundraising efforts through tonight, I think this already speaks volumes of his "support" as well as support for his message.

Oh, and did I mention that we're at about $8.7 million ?

Ron is the ONLY candidate from the GOP raising any KIND of serious money from the people! Mitt is tapping his own personal resources and Rudy...well, we know where his money is coming from, and Mikey can showcase Chuck Norris all he wants but that's NOT going to fill his coffers as is being evidenced in realtime on his website.

Remember, Mike's goal is $2 million folks, and look where he's at!

rewarding bad behavior

We are rewarding very unwise behavior by Jonathan Bydlak. There will never be a media grabbing money bomb if Jonathan Bydlak gets rewarded for diffusing the grassroots commitment to collective action. He will do it again and again because it drives short term donations up. I am very very disgusted. I cannot express my disappointment sufficiently. I told him so in a reply to his spam alert. I wish people were wise enough to trust the grassroots and tell this guy where to stick it.

a lot of people are presently tapped out.

this is only 15 days after the bomb. Bydlak is shortsighted and unaware of the effect in donations by participating in collective action. Collective action can be very very powerful. This man is destroying the potential of collective action. Disgusting. Without the bomb donations overall will not be as much. This is a certainty. Jonathan is squandering millions and millions of Ron Paul dollars in his shortsightedness. This does not even include the dollar value of the event as a media opportunity. Face it. This was a big big mistake and Jonathan will continue to pull this crap because we are rewarding his efforts. He is payed to blow smoke and unfortunately it is working. Fewer dollars will flow into the campaign as a result and there will be no media event if this behavior is repeated by the campaign. I paid far more into the November 5th event than I otherwise would have donated to date. This is true for many people. Why? Because dollars on an event day are worth far more than on a non event day. So have fun I hope we win. This was a big mistake. The campaign is not automatically right. They are people. So are we.

While that IS one possibility... I think it is an unlikely one for several reasons (see my main analysis of his email above).

Jon is NOT a standard politico... (hint: he was an early Meetup organizer and assistant organizer, grassroots kind of guy... he GETS it.)

I think today's email (complete with hyperbole) is to generate a bit of cash to compensate for the downward trend as thanksgiving and the TeaParty approach. I doubt the results from this will pull in more than $1M, and a significant part of that will NOT be coming out of TP07.

Beside, as you yourself HAVE noted, two full weeks HAVE passed since Nov5th... and more than 3 weeks remain until Dec 16th. (And if Nov5th and personal anecdotes from people around here are any indication, 1/2 to 2/3 of donors will be entirely NEW donors -- people who are not yet receiving JB's emails. What I mean by that is that 21K of the 37K Nov5th donors had never donated previously; and I know from members around here, several who had NOT donated -- not even on Nov5th -- were CONVINCED by it to donate in the future, and they have now signed up for Dec16th.)

And yeah, this could be a *minor* mistake -- Jon and the rest ARE human (so is Ron Paul) -- it may "diminish" the TeaParty totals slightly, but it won't "destroy" them. They will still exceed Nov5th substantially.

So chill... it's all cool.
