President Barack Obama’s promise of change took on new force Thursday as the White House rolled out a 10-year spending plan that seeks to steer the nation away from today’s staggering deficits but risks new fights over taxes and defense spending.

The 134-page document paints in bold strokes but never escapes the sea of red ink facing the government, as Obama must navigate a course between fiscal discipline and not stifling efforts to turn around the collapsing economy.

The 2009 deficit, for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, is now projected at $1.75 trillion, after a final White House adjustment allowing $250 billion in more aid for failing banks. Even if Obama should succeed with all his proposals, the 2019 projected deficit is $712 billion and the national debt will have almost doubled again to $23.1 trillion.

Any plan projecting out more than 1 year is 100% BS

The only reason they included 10 years into the future is for BS spin purposes. No plan ever devised in Washington DC has accurately predicted the future beyond what is being voted on at that split second. Either Obama is cutting the deficit NOW or he's not. If the economy gets worse then this plan will be "adjusted" and the deficit reduction will fly out the window. All Obama is trying to do is to play clever so nothing can get pinned on him when the deficit explodes. They're thinking: it'll take a full year before they can refer back to this document and by then we'll be able to deflect any criticism by hyping the "danger" of whatever flavor-of-the-month "terror" the gov't wants us all to fear. The plan is either fiscally responsible now or it is not. Gee, this plan looks an awful lot like tax and spend business as usual.

Amen

The idiots are buying this 50% deficit reduction crap. Savings from Iraq and increased taxes on the rich will do it? Maybe we need the power of the rich in a revolt. Let the connected lead the way. People are soooooo stupid.

I'm confused

How can he reduce the deficit when he just had Congress appropriate almost $800B to stimulate the economy. Just because it's not a budget item doesn't make it any less an expenditure.

Boy, those in Washington are the true masters of creative accounting.

If our government were operating in the real world...they would have been out of business a long time ago
