Ron Paul in the Sunday NYT Magazine

Dear Everyone,

It is what we've all been waiting for - the big writeup in the Sunday New York Times Magazine. To read it requires a password, but signup is free.

Even though you've read it online, please be sure to go out and buy the paper tomorrow. As Phil put it elsewhere on the site:

A spike in sales of tomorrow's New York Times will send a clear message. Buy it even if you've read the article online already, and REGARDLESS of how you feel about it.

Agreed.

AWESOME!!!

THEY EVEN PUBLISHED THE WHOLE THING!!! YEAH!!!

Personal contacts are most effective

.
Despite the generally favorable tone of the New York Times piece (the comparison to "Mr. Smith" was catchy and correct) I doubt that the article will garner many converts to Ron Paul.

Those who read the Times, particularly residents of Manhattan, are pretty much solidly democrat. They will support either Hillary or Barack Obama, no matter how much they may admire Dr. Paul. This is also true of The Washington Post, the LA Times and the Boston Globe.

The best and most effective way to convince others is through a personal contact; someone you know. I don't badger anybody, but I make sure they get at least one email, with the link to the terrific Ron Paul: Stop Dreaming video. That packs more punch than any print piece, and everyone who has seen it has been moved to support Dr. Paul.

Please permalink, avoid login screen

(These are next to the story sidebar under "Share.")

Besides working in the future, apparently permalinks aren't hassled with the NYT login screen in the meantime.

However, you can still sign in afterwards, as the best way to promote the story within NYT is probably to use their built-in capabilities to re-mail the story.

Let me just reiterate - Wasn't printed in the paper...

Drop by your local convenience store or newsstand and check out the front page. It's Rudy on the front page. RP's article is buried in the 'magazine' which gets added in with all the coupon handouts that most people chuck anyways. Even though I eventually found it (I went through the paper twice with no luck and didn't diligently check the 'Magazine' because It's not even on the cover of THAT), I'm still pretty disappointed. I doubt this will reach the huge audience we all thought it would reach. I guess I shouldn't be so upset. It IS in there which is better than nothing.

-Phil Hemingway III

Don't be upset!

Phil,

I'm a nutty enough libertarian to subject myself to the NYTimes on a regular (daily) basis, and I think some info could make you feel better.

The New York Times Magazine *is* somewhat separate from the newspaper, but its readership is actually huge. I dug up the Times' own advertising department data, and here's what you're looking at:

- 1.6 million weekly circulation for the magazine
- average 2 readers per copy
- average time spent reading it: 1 hr, 42 minutes
(Sources cited at http://www.ronpaulhq.com/2007_07_01_archive.php#407078029415...)

Judging by the numbers, it's fair to guess that well over 2 million people saw that article, and, more than likely, read at least half of it (which is also great because anything I'd complain about was at the end). Anyway, the Magazine has a large and loyal readership--and the article was clearly designed to appeal to them: anti-war, opposed by Bush & Co., liked by Barney Franks...

Thanks Kate for Circulation

....I was wondering, but couldn't easily find the info. I am so glad you did and passed it on. That is huge.

This weekend I went to a dinner party in San Pedro for a newly wed couple. Most attendees were business people from southern Ca. At our table of 12 (& most of us had not met each other), all but two knew about Ron Paul and six of us were loyal supporters. Sunday I went to a newsstand in San Diego to purchase the NYT. They were out and the guy at the counter looked at me and said "Ron Paul?"...I grinned and said "Yes."

While there is nothing scientific about the above encounters; they are real and in settings other than meet-ups or rallies. I believe it's..haaaapppening! This is history, isn't it? Exciting.

If you won't buy it...

Overall, I think the piece was about as fair and in-depth an article as could be expected by someone trying to maintain their objectivity (i.e. not a fan, not a critic). If you agree, but don't want to buy a copy, just go to NYT and email the story (from their site) to someone you want to share it with. Currently, it's #8 on their list of Most Emailed stories. People often glance over at these Top 10 Lists and end up reading stories they would otherwise never see...and I don't need to tell you that a lot of people read NYTimes.com!

Peace be with y'all.

There is a great article on Ron Paul in The Economist magazine

There is a nice article on Ron Paul in The Economist magazine on page 32 of the July 21st-27th issue. Please spread the word.

It actually states in the article, "His supporters are diligent correspondents and, having published this article, The Economist expects to hear from them."

Spread the word to contact The Economist and thank them for the positive press!!!

Here is how to do it.

Please note, due to the volume of mail we receive, we cannot reply personally to all messages. Published letters will be edited for length and style.

Here is the letter I sent to the editor:

Thank you for writing such a fact filled, informative article on Dr. Ron Paul. If more Americans knew of his commitment to defend the Constitution, his refusal to “play politics” to garner votes, his service to his country, and his stand on taxes and the war; the Republican parties top candidate would certainly not be None of the Above. Thank you for taking a closer look at a real conservative Presidential Candidate and a true American Patriot.

Disappointment - HOLD YOUR MONEY...

To my dismay, Rudy Giuliani was front page news in the Sunday Times. The Ron Paul article we had hoped to see get published was nowhere to be found. At least they put a pic of a guy holding a "Giuliani = Police State" sign on the front page, too.

I wonder why this would be done? Possibly because the article was leaked online? Or were we duped? At any rate, I owe an apology to the guy who asked below "Why buy it?"
-Phil Hemingway III

I think I'm going to buy 10 copies...

and then give 'em away.

-Phil Hemingway III

Nevermind, it's $4.00 a pop...

I'll buy one and donate to the campaign instead.
-Phil Hemingway III

Why buy it?

I don't agree with the statement that a spike in sales will send a clear message.

First of all. As others have pointed out the article contained some fallacies, such as that the WTO and NAFTA promote free trade. Also the headline is rather direct, for example his "anti-medicare" stance isn't elaborated in the article. He has stated several times before his intent and campaign program for 2008 doesn't even include cutting spending for medicare, and if there are any funds left (from cutting foreign spending) they'll be redirected towards such programs.

Second of all, from what I hear the New York Times is rather biased. I haven't actually read that many NYT articles but I keep hearing that they were one of the newspapers who kept beating the drums going into the Iraq war. If so, this does not bode well for their journalistic integrity.

I'd personally wouldn't want to fund such a newspaper, not even on the basis that it might (though totally unproven) support Ron Paul by sending off some sort of a message.

In response to your comment...

It really shouldn't have been leaked online in the first place. And second, the message that's sent will mainly be to those in charge at the NYT... I can see them saying to themselves 'Hey we had X more sales than our typical Sunday sales. Hmm, I wonder why? Probably b/c of the Ron Paul article. Maybe, just maybe, we should include more Ron Paul articles b/c he sells a lot of newspapers."

I wasn't aware you could sign up online and read it. That's great too because from what Mr. Nystrom says it's free for you, and on top of that it will send the same message through a spike in their website's internet traffic, which will mean more $ from the banner ad companies that pay to put ads on their website.
