Why your doctor is just a drug pusher

I worked in health care for over 20 years. Even with the "anti-kickback" laws, the reps still show up with goodies for the doctor, dressed like prostitutes most of the time, and "studies" that are COMPLETELY bogus, but a way to get around the law. (Now, I am NOT defending the regulations, over regulation is what fear-mongered good hearted doctors, and made them run hire CFOs to run their practice.) I also worked on a couple of legitimate major "Clinical Trials." This began with a trip to the Caribbean for training... If you are taking any prescription medications, I urge you to research who founded the AMA and why, and then research ANY alternatives. Good people got indoctrinated by very, very bad people, and now they are the "experts" in healthcare, and they cannot see the lies they support. Even if you choose to continue taking your Rx, at least KNOW a natural alternative in case your supply becomes disrupted.

As one of the "drug pushers" I would like to comment.....

First, I am disappointed that DP would feature a video whose bottom line is essentially; "we need more regulation" and a stronger more aggressive FDA to fight those big bad drug companies. (Oh yeah, and "educate" doctors and medical students about the wily ways of pharmaceutical salesmen.)

Secondly, this video (and many of the comments) are fighting the last war.
The freebies/bribes that drug companies used to lavish on the rank and file doctor are a thing of the past. There are no more golfing junkets or fishing trips to the Bahamas. (Not that I ever went on one anyway.) I can't take my wife with me to one of their "drug dinners", so I have only attended one in the last four years. Heck, as of 2009 the drug salesmen aren't even allowed to hand out cheap pens or post-its to doctors.

By the way, this latest "reform" was instituted as a self-regulatory rule established by the PHARMA (Pharmaceutical Manufacturers of America) to maintain their high ethical standards. In fact, it was nothing but a cynical attempt to redirect all of their advertising resources to the PATIENT and away from the doctor who has less and less say about what he can or can not prescribe. (Drug formularies and insurance plans dictate that now.)

Finally, this video does not offer any truly libertarian solutions to the problem. It just leaves us with a vague sense that the system stinks and that "They" (big government?) need to do something about it.

I would offer my own solutions but I don't have time to make a video, and any post I would make would just get buried beneath a sea of apathy.

Sorry, doc, but the solution was there in my comments

Find natural alternatives. Grow them yourself if you can, it does not get any more libertarian than that.
Good folks like you (usually) cannot get past the indoctrination you were given in Med School. My comments also pointed out that more regulation is not the answer. This video is excellent for helping people who need HEALING search in a more fruitful location than allopathic medicine.
Western medicine, under the careful guidance of the Rockefellers, is designed to maintain a level of illness that the patient will tolerate and that will maximize profits.
I have a friend who is a brilliant person, and an attorney. I cannot even get them to read "Cracking the Code" because they were fully indoctrinated in Law School, and now are confident in their own expertise. There is a whole world of HEALING out there, doc. Try to let go of your training and embrace the truth of healing, the first thing to heal will be your inner healer. Physician, heal thyself...

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

Good points.

I did not mean to ignore your solutions.
Alternative/naturopathic medicine is certainly part of the answer.
I do however object to the simplistic view of medicine/healing as "traditional-bad,alternative-good".

A person with a cholesterol of 450 should know about it and treat it with more than fish oil and exercise. If you sincerely disagree with that then you are speaking either from prejudice or ignorance.

Since I did not go to medical school until I was 35, I had already formed some opinions about nutrition and "natural"/oriental healing through my martial arts training. I think I was fairly resistant to the medical school brain-washing. ( (BTW, I am an osteopathic not an allopathic physician and I contend that there is a difference in our training when it comes to alternative and/or holistic medicine.)

I was concerned because the VIDEO does not give a very balanced or realistic view of the problem OR give viable solutions.

In fact, the VIDEO does come dangerously close to advocating a statist/collectivist approach to solving a problem which should be very individual and personal.

That was and still is my problem with careless doctor-bashing in general, and this video in particular.

John D. Rockefeller started the current medical system

Allopathic medicine (aka conventional medicine) came about after the Civil War. John D. Rockefeller, whose philandering father hawked a cancer treatment made from oil (something refined from crude, I believe), quickly got into the cancer treatment racket himself.

That's why there will never be a cure for cancer as long as this system is in place. Cancer treatments today cost, on average, $350,000 per person. Never mind that the treatments are worse than the disease and then you die anyway. However, you will have left your doctors, technicians, hospitals and drug companies a little richer, though your relatives will be a whole lot poorer.

To make a long story short, Rockefeller and his billions had a heavy hand in shaping the current medical system. It was always about making money and never about healing people. As time passed, doctors who wouldn't become card carrying AMA members were vilified ... labeled quacks. Rockefeller money supported AMA style medical schools, where the curricula was tailor made to enrich doctors and drug companies. Likewise, the hospitals were converted to the allopathic system.

When people could no longer afford doctors or hospital stays, POOF! The insurance industry was born.

If you know someone with cancer, check out: www.cancerfungus.com. The best cancer killer is banking soda! Other advice: find an alternative doctor ... going for a regular annual checkup to a conventional MD is suicide.

My doctor isn't, I am happy

My doctor isn't, I am happy to say. He prescribed broccoli for my leg cramps. He said that he could give me a prescription with lots of potassium but that I would get more and better potassium out of big helping of broccoli every day. I love it and it worked! There are some good doctors out there.

Before I watched the video,

Before I watched the video, I had to read all of the comments. I too saw this problem firsthand. I was a server at a very nice restaurant known for steaks and good wines. The drug reps would rent out smaller rooms in the back and host 5-15 doctors with about 2-6 reps. They specifically told us that they would pay up to $100/head. They would tip very generously (20-25%).

I helped out a server one time, since they were all given their food at once and we were not allowed to carry food on a tray. I heard a doctor asking the reps "How do I get my patient to believe this is a disorder?". Immediately I glanced at the doctor and behind him was a rep staring me down. It was a very evil stare telling me to keep quiet. Well I'm not.

You're all right that the drug companies are evil. I didn't realize there would be this many RP supporters who knew about it from personal experience too. How should it be handled? I do agree with the previous comment that the video sounds like a message for government involvement. At the same time, you do have evil corporations which pretend they're god, yet act like the devil.

Really not that dumb.

I think you all are making the assumption that this big dinner will really influence the doctor. If a doctor gets proper information on the risks of a certain medication, then it is of benefit for the patient. Getting free lobster, is fine with the doctor! In the end, the reps are wasting their time! Any doctor, worth his salt, has a lot of things to consider in treating his patients. One of which is cost effectiveness. It is not practiced throughout medicine. But, for example, a doctor who treats ear infections can use the drug Augmentin, in a kid at the cost of $150 or the generic Amoxil, which is just slightly less effective, at $3.00. I came from a poor family, so I always was conscious of cost. Now if that kid was one of the three out of one hundred that got no better, then you could use the expensive drug. I used almost all generics in my practice and the local pharmacists knew it. I enjoyed my meals, knowing I was sticking it to the man just a little more. I would only use a drug if I knew from my research that it was better. And most of the time, the generics worked just fine! I liked Crestor for a statin. It was effective and much less costly. But the Mevacor rep gave great dinners! We are not that stupid. We did not get through our educational experience without learning something. Thing is, you can't trust any one selling you something! They are only it it for the money, not you, or your patient's welfare! Don't assume, all, doctor are that crooked, or stupid. It is condescending!

Fly On The Wall...

As a waiter working in some fancy hotels I heard the darndest things.... Once when the drug companies were in town a breakfast table full of doctors were talking about their patients. I'll NEVER forget one conversation I heard in passing by as one doctor coldly exclaimed "I had her on everything I could get her on" in reference to prescription drugs. If I had owned the restaurant I would have kicked her ass out the door for being plain evil.

Once a large group of golfers were having dinner in a very fancy restaurant on Hilton Head Island.. I asked them if they wanted water with their meal. One of the guys yells out to the extent everyone in the room couldn't help but hear: "HELL NO I don't want water.... fish f#%k in it...! The bar had a busy night needless to say.

My parents are both Family Practice M.D.s

and they happen to be very good at keeping people healthy and getting injured or sick people back to normal. They are well versed in side effects and prices of medication, and will only prescribe the cheapest and most effective and safest medications possible, or even no medication at all when not needed. They are on to the whole hot/hunky drug rep game.

Intention

I really don't think Drs start out with evil intentions. People pursue health careers to help people. I can only imagine what kind of brainwashing takes place in universities.

Thankfully, there still are a few who don't lose their principles along the way.

Oh The Money.... Oh the Food and Drink

Worked the banquet staff at several fancy Atlanta Hotels in the late 1990's and my oh my the money the drug companies paid out for their conventions.

I remember a table the size of a small pool table filled with lobster tails... 8 inches thick. We were paid in relation to how much they ate/drank so it was very obvious when the drug companies were in town everyone fought to get work that week.

Cocktail parties every day... free golf trips for the guys and shopping for the gals. Name brand entertainment at night. After seeing all the money thrown around I started to wonder and worry that something here was way different than when other business sectors would visit our hotels... drug companies were lavish lavish lavish.

Amish midwives with oxytocin - Oh, My!

Can anyone think of a good reason not to give Amish midwives oxytocin to carry with them to births? Quick background: If a woman hemorrhages after childbirth, oxytocin can save her life.

A woman in my state was sentenced to 2 years for refusing to rat out the doctor who gave her the oxytocin to carry to save people's lives.

The only reason doctors put so much pressure on the government to persecute out of hospital birthing is because they want the money for women to have babies in hospitals - with all the inherent risk of exposing themselves to the interventions of hospital birthing.

8 yrs ago I was cleaning a

8 yrs ago I was cleaning a new drug reps teeth . He worked for Eli Lily and they were just coming out with Evista. He had the drug rap down, he was able to give an in depth speech on the efficacy of this drug and he explained that MD's are so busy that his info that he passes on about his drugs is considered certified continuing education.
Once they released this drug to the public they gave their reps a huge party and had Huey Lewis and the News (all expense paid trip back to Atlanta GA). He also explained the he HAD to spent his allotted 10K a month on the MD's he made his rounds to. I asked him if spending this much $ was difficult. He said sometimes but if he found that he still had too much $ in his account by the end of the month he would just take a bunch of Docs out to an expensive restaurant and buy them booze. All this to train our Doctors to be drug pushers....

I used to work for a

Pharmacist when I was a kid.

What you said about the drug reps was RIGHT ON THE MONEY.

ALWAYS coming in with donuts, pens, pads, coffee mugs, and all kinds of other crap. I had instinctively decided to avoid them, and their "gifts".

That was 22 years ago. Some things never change...

Watch out that you don't

Watch out that you don't start bashing capitalism. After watching this video, I could be wrong, but I got the sense that whoever made this video would rather the government fully be in charge of our medications even more so than it appears due to government/private sector partnering.

I think there is a fine line. I just hope my doctor is smarter than the video is giving him/her credit for. And the beauty of our system currently is that if I don't like what my doctor is saying, I can leave and go elsewhere.

And by the way, the "goodies" have stopped. The industry itself was proactive and ceased passing out the branded trinkets at the beginning of the year. Every industry/business hands out things with their logo/company name on them.

If the mainstream media didn't report it, it doesn't exist!

They are drugpushers alright!

Had a very clear reminder of that only 10 days ago.

I needed to have blood pressure checked because of chronic high blood pressure (189/125), and asked for a test to have cholesterol levels checked as well.
His response was: No, that won't do any good because you won't let me treat you anyway.
On my query what he would suggest as treatment if cholesterol was also high, he responded: statins.
Thanks but no thank you.
If unaware of the serious side effects of statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) please have a browse around on this website http://www.thincs.org/discuss.Jan03.htm)

So if unwilling to take drugs, they won't 'waste' money on tests.

And your point is?

If you did not want to take statins, then it would be a waste of money to check your cholesterol, would it not? People need to consider a thing called the risk/benefit ratio. If you have no side effects from statins, then taking them would be of great benefit with no risk. If you have serious complications, including elevated liver enzymes of rhabdomylysis, then it would be just the opposite. There are not too many, in the general public, that can make this decision on their own. But, it is your right to refuse any treatment you want. Just be sure to make a wise decision. In this case, you are tying your doctor's hands. But he is not cooperating with you, either. It looks like he is trying to blackmail you into taking the statins. Both actions result in less than optimal care.

And, my personal opinion.... I think people run to the doctor for every little sniffle and that is part of the problem. Visit the doctor more, and you are at more risk for some form of complication.

There are way too many doctor that still want to play God and tell you what you have to do! They just kick you out of the practice if they don't like it! The doctor/patient relationship should be and adviser/client role and not a father /child role. If your doctor won't work with you, what good is he? Find a new one!

On the other hand, there is another problem The sad thing is, that if a person, say 30 dies from a heart attack, and that persons' family decides to sue the doctor for negligence, he has a problem! That doctor is going to have to have mighty good reasons, documented well, in his chart, why he let you decide to choose a course of treatment that put you at risk for that fatal MI. It is not all so simple as it may seem.

My point is.

that there are alternative ways to lower cholesterol.
Curcumin, B3, serrapeptase and there are others. With the last reading being 2 years old, I would have appreciated a current reading and know where I am at.
But, the message I was given: no drugs? no test. That is what I call no good patient care.

Statins have many side effects. Having a friend in a wheel chair now due to neuropathy in legs (side effect of statins). Another dear friend of mine just had eye trouble, turns out to be result of stroke, sight in eye is nearly gone. Side effect. Memory loss is a common side effect. Statins are not the no risk drugs they tell you they are.
Most side effects are irreversible.

Harvard Medical School in Ethics Quandary

BOSTON — In a first-year pharmacology class at Harvard Medical School, Matt Zerden grew wary as the professor promoted the benefits of cholesterol drugs and seemed to belittle a student who asked about side effects.'

Mr. Zerden later discovered something by searching online that he began sharing with his classmates. The professor was not only a full-time member of the Harvard Medical faculty, but a paid consultant to 10 drug companies, including five makers of cholesterol treatments.

“I felt really violated,” Mr. Zerden, now a fourth-year student, recently recalled. “Here we have 160 open minds trying to learn the basics in a protected space, and the information he was giving wasn’t as pure as I think it should be."

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/03/business/03medschool.html?...

It's So Sad....

I have two main comments about this terrible tragedy: 1) Be careful about speaking (and critically) about prescription drugs at any social gathering, as about half the people there will most certainly be using them; and 2) Never trust your doctor when it comes to prescription advice. Unfortunately for me - and on more than one occasion - I've had doctors "suggest" trying certain prescriptions. And I wasn't inquiring or asking for them in any way. In both instances, I mentioned that I was a bit stressed but that, in general, I was fine. You could almost see their fangs come out when I said that. So freakin' sad.

Natural food, regular exercise and a reasonable amount of sleep each night are almost always the best answers.

I always wondered

about that. Whenever I was at the Dr. or visiting my best friend who worked at a Dr. office, I'd notice that the drug reps. were always seductively dressed girls and if they were a guy, almost too good-looking and dressed to the 9's. It's like the only requirement for being a drug rep. was to be attractive & buy lunch. They all appeared to be bimbos.

And have you noticed all the paraphernalia?

And have you noticed all the paraphernalia? Pens, notepads, coffee mugs, clips ... all with the drug names, to keep them in front of the doctor's faces.

Not anymore

This stuff has ALL recently been banned. About the only thing left is the 'educational' dinner. It may seem like an amazingly good deal that some drug rep wants to buy you a $100 meal for 2-3 hours of your time. For a doctor, that's crap pay for time that they'd greatly prefer to spend with their family and friends.

All that marketing money has just shifted to commercials pushing the same drugs to people who aren't qualified to know if they need them or not. If you watch TV, you're being bought off by the drug companies with free episodes of Lost or whatever you watch. The stupid thing is that all those commericals cost WAY more than 'lavish' trips and freebies like pens and coffee mugs.

It's just another case of government regulation making things cost more unnecessarily.
