How did you convince your spouse of the collapse?
I've been aware of the fiscal and economic disaster course this nation has been set upon for quite some time. Having lived through the go-go days of the dotcom boom its been tough to explain to people that their degree of affluence is not permanent and in fact, seems destined to disappear.
The collapse I and others have seen coming for a while seems to be quite upon us and I'm feeling where it would now be rational to start storing up various items in case of "severe dislocations" that could occur... I'm talking about a couple of month's supply of meds, toilet paper, etc, etc.
Anyone have any stories to tell about how they were able to convince a spouse that wasn't totally on board with your vision of what will happen in the markets and what will happen domestically economically and, yes, militarily? We've only been together two years but I would think by now she has seen me make every single call on each step down this spiral. I just don't know if she's ready to commit to hoarding non-perishible foods.

Money as Debt.....
.. A girlfriend of mine who is upside down in her condo. mortage stopped by for a few drinks, the other day. She was feeling increadibly guilty about her situation. For over a year I have watched this girl fight to keep "up to date" with everything she had. Working 6-7 days weeks etc. Never, going out. Beating herself up for enjoying the smallest pleasures in life, like a $10 btl of wine. So, I asked if she knew how her mortage was created. She replied as I expected, "from others savings/deposits in the Banks, right?" Then I sat her down in my office with a fresh glass of "red", infront of the computer. 5 mins. into the film she started to become angry. Angry at herself for not knowing this information. Angry at the Banks for engaging in such a fraud against Society and most of all, Angry at the Government for not only allowing the fraud, but promoting it. To say the least, it has had a huge effect for the way she now views the world. "Money as Debt" on google video has all 47 mins w/o interuption and the most useful tool I have found to explain why we are where we are today, and why it's not the fault of millions of American homeowners. Hope it helps!
No it IS the fault of those homeowners
Because they VOTED for that government that royally screwed them.
Because they IGNORED the opportunity to LEARN about money and what it isn't.
Because that when anyone tried to warn them of evils of excess and the virtues of thrift - they though they KNEW BETTER, and were AFRAID, and INSECURE.
It IS their fault.
We are a nation founded on the principle of SELF government - not in electing our leaders, but in Governing OUR OWN SELVES. To the degree that we don't, others gladly step in to do it for us.
WE ARE AT FAULT.
The solution lies in GOVERNING our OWN behavior, attitudes, and actions.
Show her the
clips of Peter Shiff was right. Have her watch some current clips of Jim Rogers as well. These people speak the truth and are some of the few who have intuitive foresight in world markets. See if you can get a friend who has lost much of their wealth in a 401K to speak with her.
If you keep at it you will have her thinking out side of the box. We all have been misinformed, explain the intent of the Constitution, the difference between a democracy and a REPUBLIC.
Maybe when you're homeless and walking the streets,
and digging through garbage, she'll come around.

It took a year...
of always being almost perfectly correct in my predictions to her. Starting in the spring of 2007, all my predictions of "doom and gloom" have come to pass. In February of 2008, I convinced her to let me take all our money out of the market and 401's, she reluctantly agreed. At this point she thinks I'm a prophet. We were spared the 50% loss, where everyone else I told to do the same and didn't, lost 50 %. They're all coming around now too. I used to be called a pessimist, now they know I'm a realist. You know how many times I hear "I should have listened to you". There are still some who say this is just temporary, but I think they will soon come around too.

Hedge against inflation
She's got to understand that the bill will come due for all these bailouts at some point. I approached my wife on the subject by explaining the inevitable inflation on the way, and that we'd save money by stocking up. Over many months, I kept her up to date on certain aspects of the situation (economy, politics, etc.) and expanded the scope of what was hoarded. She's totally on board now.

buys gas, pays electric, buys food, knows anyone who is unemployed has been stopped at a check point, knows anything about history. If somebody is exposed to the truth and they still don't get it, it's time to realize they are probably an idiot. One sandwich short of a picnic, lights on nobody home, not the sharpest knife in the drawer, one beer short of a six pack. Tell brain trust never mind.
Have you tried reciting poetry to your spouse?
Gold! Gold! Gold! Gold!
The yellow metal has intrinsic value,
At least that’s what we are told.
Gary North says it’s so, and he would know.
He’s the investment guru of LewRockwell.com,
So it cannot – must not! – be a job of snow. No!
“A 50% drop in GDP during the first half of 2009.
Gloom! Doom!” cries Karl Denninger. But why,
Did he ban from Market Ticker this poem of mine?
“In coin shops all political truth can be found.”
So says Jeffrey Tucker. But how does he explain,
Why our golden investments have all run aground?
Zounds! $850, $250, $1000 and $700 in thirty years.
Gold prices are volatile, at least that much is clear,
I don’t get this dizzy after a whole case of beers!
Gold bugs claim: They’ve made millions since 1983.
But they’re living in plywood shacks in northern Idaho.
Should we believe what they tell us, or what we see?
In Moses’ time they danced around a golden calf,
Now Paulistas say, “Gold is money made by God.”
Not much has changed. What a laugh!

It can be thought of as "Investing in commodities"
Seriously, we stockpiled rice and beans last winter, and the price on those items has doubled.
Also, if you explain to most women that having extra food around means they can offer to feed hungry neighbors rather than shoot them, they can sometimes stockpile for the sake of helping others when it seems to silly to do it for themselves.
Good luck. I have often marvelled at how hard it would be to be in a relationship with someone who could not quite wake up.
Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.
Imagine how hard it is being a single guy when most women
are asleep?
The number one thing hindering me are my "deal breakers" concerning living "in the system" so to speak. Try to find a woman that understands it is perfectly okay NOT to have a bank account and credit cards when you own your house, car, have no debt, have savings, are well stocked and prepared for just about anything, AND know how to not only survive, but NOT panic when the SHTF. For some reason, they seem to prefer guys who are following the rest of the lemmings off the cliff.
I guess the upside is if they survive, those guys probably won't, and I'll still be here - and by comparison to starving to death, will look better and better each day. I think it would be analogous to 'beer goggles' in some weird way.
I just said
Its an insurance policy to protect our family (food gold silver water filters guns ammo) and Im going to do this, just picture our 4 year old crying because we cant feed him. After what happend last sept and seeing where the price of gold went she was very greatful.
I began..
my quest for knowledge when living next to the Mexico border and wanting to understand why our government was so lax on border security, yet so driven to stop "terrorism". I thought that the government must know what they are doing, but I just did not understand. So, I started taking Political Science courses and realized that the government was not doing the right thing and on more levels than just border security.
My husband felt a bit overwhelmed with the info I was relaying to him even in the beginning, so I laid off informing him. Eventually all the peices began fitting into place for me and the picture became clearer and clearer; not to mention more sinister. I felt so betrayed by our elected officials. It was at this point I started slowly telling my husband; slowly because I knew how overwhelmed I had felt even learning this info gradually. He understood completely and began informing everyone he knew; although he wasn't as gentle about it as I had been with him. My husband had always been one of those people that believed that one person could not make a difference, but he tried.
At one point he became so discouraged and stressed out with the whole thing, he asked me to stop telling him anything regarding the government, the economy, and the state of the nation. I stopped talking about it. It wasn't even a week later that he was doing research of his own and telling me about the latest unconstitutional act or market failure.
I think people need to swallow this stuff slowly, so they can process it. Eventually the puzzle will fit together.
As far as storing essentials...
I wouldn't start out with rice and beans...You could appeal to her by starting with storing her favorite things... Say she's a coffee person... Start out saying something like, "Just in case I am right, why don't you buy a stock of your favorite coffee honey. If I'm right, you'll always have your favorite coffee. If I'm wrong, you can always drink it and spend the money you'd usually spend on coffee for something nice for yourself like a pedicure" Then of course you'd need sugar for the coffee, and well you'd want to be sure you had water stored and a water filter to make the coffee, and so on.. If she's an organizational person, she may even "get into it" and take over the whole operation. If that doesn't work; and I know the picture this paints is not pretty, but have her imagine life without her feminine products, you know the kind you need when your monthly friend visits. That may just be a "just in case' she won't be willing to risk; I know I wasn't. Plus, in a worst case scenario, I bet feminine products will be valuable.
I Don't Have To
I marry naturally brilliant women.

When I told -
my spouse NOT to buy the house we live in because it was not (and never was) worth what the market said it was at the time.
These days, the house is worth less than 1/2 of what was paid and all equity that was built up over the years is lost. What I say is taken a little bit more seriously now. I wish I would've been wrong, but knew I wasn't.

he had listened. That was a few years ago and he listens now.
I actually present very
I actually present very little of this to my wife and kids.. I do the worrying for all of use.. My wife gives me the leadway to prepare.. I have told her some things and she can see the bad stuff going on so she knows I;m not misleading her.. but when you get to the riots/ martial law stuff etc or what could come I keep that to myself knowing that we are prepared.

ask her if she believes in car and house insurance
and health insurance, and life insurance, etc.
This is a different kind of insurance. Insurance against price fixing, and bank holidays, and urban & inner city volatility.
better to have it, and never need it
Use common sense and What If?
Common sense is to buy supplies when they are on sale to save money, and if it is non-perishable items, it makes good sense.
What if? we had a natural disaster and support systems were down for awhile? The supplies would be necessities then.
There is no 'down-side' to having a good stock of necessities.
If she won't try to understand economics
if she won't try to understand economics or read histories of ecomomic collapse, you're best bet would be impress upon her your intention of protecting your family. This should make her warm and fuzzy.
I'm a female and have friends just like her. Some women just aren't interested.
On the other hand, I just told my husband what we were gong to do.
Hahahaha!!!
~ Me too :)

Aww :(
~ Well a collapse may change that! You'll be snuggled up close by the fire sippin' moonshine and eating spam :) What else is there to do on a cold night?
Come to think about it, it would be a whole realignment of family values for a lot of people. Just what America needs!
