Most people alive today will NOT be alive when/if US recovers
Today, U.S. fundamentals are far worse than they were in 1929. . . . For such reasons, I believe that real recovery in the U.S. will take far longer than the quarter-century it took to finally shake off the effects of the Great Depression. Most people alive today will not be alive when (or rather, if) America returns to the level of prosperity this generation grew up taking for granted.
And that is what you get when you let government and a monopoly-chartered central bank control your nation's system of money.

As for WHY we're in this situation:
Why is Counterfeiting Illegal?
If printing up trillions of dollars to "stimulate spending" is going to save the economy, why do we ever put up with even the slightest recession? Just print that funky money, boys and girls! Give every citizen a high-speed color laser printer and require everyone to download the Official Dollar Jpeg Files and then print, print, PRINT those dollars nonstop, day and night! Every man, woman, and child would be a multi-billionaire, and economic activity would be red-hot forever!
Why stop at ten giant-screen TVs when you can have twenty? Heck, why not panel every wall in your mansion floor-to-ceiling with big-screen LCDs? You couldn't get them all home in your new Ferrari, but you could easily buy a fleet of vans for the job – and hire drivers for them, too. You could buy ANYTHING YOU WANTED, every day of the year!
See what I mean? How could the economic crisis withstand that? Problem solved! – at least if we believe the rationale for America 's current response to the financial crisis.

What's a fella to do ?
I closed out one bank in trouble, then deposited into another bank only to find out (news) it has been nationalized >> http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/27/business/worldbusiness/27r...
I'm going to start putting it under my mattress.

Freedom is another way to God...A corrupt government is a straight way to hell.
I believe in Hope & Change..I Hope the government will Change

This recession will only
This recession will only last as long as the government tries to fight it, since government intervention always slows recovery. That's why the Great Depression lasted so long...not because of how bad things got screwed up, but because the government was trying to fix it. If the government just got out of the way (let businesses fail, remove minimum wage, cut spending, cut taxes, etc), we'd be in good shape within a couple years, despite how bad things are screwed up currently.
So yes, as long as the government tries to fight it at least as much as it tried to fight the great depression, we will have a very long, painful time ahead of us. It doesn't have to be that way, but I don't think the government's going to get out of the way anytime soon.

So to spur on conversation regarding this...
What do you feel will happen to those that won't make it? Starvation? Murder during theft?
Preparation is the key.

I dread even thinking about it.
I talk to my adult children about preparing, and most are, but don't really take it seriously. As to neighbors, only a couple of mine are preparing, but we are feeling the pinch financially and are about to lose our vehicle, necessary for work, and other things, (thank God our land is paid for, and we built our house mortgage free, although still not done, probably won't be done.) We are trying to store food, and still have much to do for it. But we were given a thousand pounds of wheat, and I have a wood fired bread oven that will bake 50 loaves of bread at a time, and a wheat grinder, so at least we can give them bread to stay alive. It will be sad when they are hungry, (most have horses) and have to kill their horses to eat them.
I understand.
Our vehicles are in jeopardy as well and we have 13 days to get out of our home before it is auctioned. We are looking at a rental property that is nearly 3 acres so we will be able to have a garden and our chickens.
My situation is opposite of yours though. It is my parents that are not listening to me. My husband and I are in our early thirties and have been preparing for over a year now. I have five children to take care of and take this very seriously.
If you need anything let me know. I can't do much but I can make soap! lol

Thank you, that is kind of you.
I have been praying for your situation. I have been there before. That is why we bought land and built our home as we go along (was a bit uncomfortable for a long time, as we camped on it, and built only a little at a time). But, better than a mortgage. I know of land for next to nothing but in a state far away from you. If you are interested, email me. Might be something you would like. And my parents too, refuse to buy food, etc. drives me nuts, as they have money, and are watching it get eaten up on the stock market. sigh, there goes my inheritance. What are your soaps made from? I used to make soap from beef tallow, etc. I always do things that doesn't require buying stuff. Still trying to figure out how to make candles out of tallow.
