Op ed in Boston Globe refers to Ron Paul as "eccentric."
Dear Scot,
I enjoyed your op ed about the GOP today in the Globe.
However I am one of the 1.24 million who voted for Ron Paul for president in the primaries.
My wife and I watched both the R and the D debates among those seeking the nominations of the major parties. We were horrified by the treatment Ron Paul received by the media. Virtually no print articles appeared about Ron Paul leading the voters to believe he did not stand a chance.
Nevertheless Ron Paul did have a growing following of people who did discover who Ron Paul is and how he has operated in the Congress where he served ten terms. He is in his eleventh term now winning by 70%.
His popularity was increasing despite the media blackout and sidelining and got 24% of the vote in the very last primary in Idaho before he suspended his campaign. Then he started his Campaign For Liberty which continues to grow across the country, below the radar. He endorsed the Young Americans for Liberty which includes the campus Ron Paul supporters.
He has recommended his supporters read the works of the Austrian school of economics luminaries, Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard, F.A. Hayek, Bastiat and even Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.
I posted a link on the www.objectivistliving.com website to a speech Ron Paul gave on the floor of the Congress about Obama and the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. I had just read your op ed which my wife pointed out to me. I commented on your use of the word "eccentric" to describe our hero.
Here is the link to the speech Ron Paul gave on the floor of the Congress:

Ron Paul was mentioned in an op ed piece in the newspaper today (Who's steering this sinking GOP ship?ScotLehigh,lehigh@globe.com) with just one word before his name, "eccentric."
I suppose because Ron Paul has consistently read each bill before the Congress in his ten terms in office that makes him eccentric.
The implication is that it is natural, proper and acceptable for an elected representative to fail to take the time to read a bill before voting on it as is true of virtually all the other congressmen. That would make him eccentric.
I suppose that when Ron Paul struggles to understand whether a power being sought by a bill is authorized in the Constitution in Article 1 section 8, that makes him eccentric.
The implication is that in this day and age it is not necessary or reasonable to determine whether adherence to the Constitution is being practiced.
I suppose that when Ron Paul abides by his oath to uphold and defend the Constitution in his actions as a Congressman that makes him eccentric.
The implication is that the usual practice these days is to take the oath as a ritual exercise but then ignore it altogether when one decides what to vote for and what to vote against.
There are a growing number of citizens, especially among the young people, who have come to understand what Ron Paul is all about. They do realize he is unique and different than most other elected congressmen. They realize the media does characterize Ron Paul as eccentric but they know he is a man of integrity who has the courage to stand virtually alone against the powerlusters and party hacks. They are reading the books on Austrian economics and Atlas Shrugged which Ron Paul has recommended to them. They are the future and their numbers will continue to grow until they become the dominant force in this country.

Please read Ron Paul's best selling book, The Revolution: A Manifesto
If you must refer to Ron Paul as being eccentric please elaborate as I have above. You are correct, Ron Paul is eccentric in the manner I make explicit. He is not like the other politicians. Ron Paul takes ideas seriously and takes the Constitution and his oath of office seriously.
Sincerely,
Wm

Great Job, Thank You Patriot!

that was a beautifully written letter.
I hope the columnist bothers to read it and reflect on the strong points you make. Thanks for defending the good Dr.

"Eccentric" is not an insult.
Look it up: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/eccentric
I think Dr. Paul is an eccentric.
It appears you may have gone overboard.
This is why many people think Paul supporters are crazed and irrational loose cannons. You see something so minor as this, that you think is a slight against Dr. Paul and take it so personally, and start writing letters, phone calls, etc.
To your credit though, at least it not a death threat. I'm glad you were civil about it.

I disagree with your comment
Notwithstanding the dictionary definition which is not at all a positive reference, maybe not negative. However, it is often used to refer to someone who is not quite with it. So I think the reporter was trying to insult the good Doctor. I apprecitate this letter in his defense.

Doesn't sound very flattering....
odd/whimsical? I would have preferred "the Champion of the Constitution" or genius or tenacious. (Don't worry about the spelling, Roger). You know what I mean.
That's the problem..
You just ASSUME that the reporter was trying to insult him.
You shouldn't assume anything of the sort until there is evidence for it.
Do you know this writer? Has he written anything insulting to Dr. Paul before?

I kinda get your point but the fact is the word eccentric is not usually used as a positive adjective.
Odd or whimsical ways
is ok? Deviating in odd or whimsical ways is a positive adjective? I don't think so and the majority of Americans don't think so. I think of some eccentric old uncle; not original and unique in a positive way but a real kook. So, no, I don't think he went overboard taking the term personally. Why do you insist on going out of your way to insult people here? You do not provide any positive contributions at all to the forum; you just belittle and deride. I don't agree with everyone here and I think some of the people here are, well, eccentric but I don't insult them. What kind of influence do you really want to have in the world? It seems like it is one of contention and division. I wouldn't be surprised if that is your intent all along. Pretty sad existence.

An eccentric is
just someone that stands out from the norm - a non-conformist. If you've ever studied psychology, eccentrics are very intelligent people. Studies show they make up about 1 out of 10,000 of the population. These people stay individualistic, standing conspicuously outside the crowd, and unique all their life, never succumbing the pressure to conform.
Dr. Paul is VERY unique, and very non-conformist. He's most certainly an eccentric.
The first assumption from so many Paul supporters, including yourself, is that a writer is using a term in a derogatory way. Why not just grant the principle of charity?
"Eccentric" is the PERFECT word to describe him, for anyone educated in the English language.

and educated in the English language. The term is not an endearing one. If you believe it is, that's fine, but I do not think the majority of Americans do.
