In Defense of FRANK LUNTZ
I am defending Frank Luntz, who apparently many Paul supporters see as Satan incarnate. They've even attacked him in person by hurling insults and expletives at him. They think he manipulates polls. And, they think he has manipulated them to be tailored against Dr. Paul.
There is no evidence for any of this. The hate for Luntz appears to have started with Penn Jillete released a video trashing Luntz. Exhibit A: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If9EWDB_zK4&feature=related
If you watch the video, Jillete twists what Luntz is saying. All Luntz is doing is explaining that a pollster has to be careful how he asks a question, because depending on how it's asked he can get two different answers. There is nothing wrong with pointing this out. This is something a pollster has to take into account if he wants his poll to be reliable. Jillete takes this and distorts it into claiming that Luntz is saying that he tailors his questions in order to get the answer he wants whether it reflects reality or not. That's not what Luntz said. So rather than Luntz being the manipulator, Penn Jillete is the manipulator of Paul supporters by making Luntz appear to saying things that he's not. I don't think this was malicious, but just stupidity on Jilette's part, and it's naivete on the part of those who continue to fall for this. I challenge you to watch this video against, and listen closer to what Luntz is saying, without listening to Jillete's editorial, and you'll see that it's totally benign and makes sense. In addition, why on Earth would a pollster agree to appear on video to reveal to the public that he manipulates polls? That's absurd.
I've also seen some Paul supporters point out that they saw the same guy in two different focus groups that were televised on Fox News. They think they've discovered a secret plot, as if Luntz was trying to hide this guy. These people don't realize that it's normal practice to have the same members of a focus group participate in multiple surveys. There is nothing in opposition to the rules of statistics. This is normal practice if a person is a good fit representative of the population they're trying to measure. Moreover, why would Luntz make it obvious? He could just hire two different people to say they same things, and you would have have never detected this alleged "manipulation." Instead, it was in plain on television as if there was nothing to hide. So, again, this is another case of naivete - unfamiliarity with focus group studies, as well as the burning desire to think that everything on television is part of an anti-Paul conspiracy.
Finally, Luntz has said good things about Ron Paul, which appears to contradict the belief from many Paul supporters that he has something against Dr. Paul. For example, Exhibit B starting at 4:20: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0mS35mqnRE . In that video, Luntz says Paul "deserves to be heard" and that he should be included in debates, that he's outpolling some top-teir candidates. Note he then goes on criticize Paul's SUPPORTERS for being irrational, not Dr. Paul. I agree with his criticism of many Paul supporters.

In conclusion, Luntz has never shown any bias against Ron Paul and has never been shown to manipulate polls. Morever, there has never been reliable evidenced presented to indicate that he has any predisposition to do so.
My overarching point is that this creation of strawmen to attack continues to a problem in "the movement." We imagine enemies and conspiracies where none exist and attack them, instead of focusing in REAL issues.
Frank Luntz is a good guy. We owe him an apology.

He is really tight with John Kasich - former congressman.
He mentioned in 1996 that he was in Kasich's home when Clinton was re-elected when Luntz was a nobody. Kasich is a fill-in for that blowhard Bill O'reilly.

Frank Luntz has no place working for an allegedly-unbiased media outlet.
You argue that there is no evidence that he manipulates polls. Look, I've taken classes in political methodology.
I don't resent Luntz for what was said about him on Penn Gillette's program. I'm well aware of the power these people have to present information in whatever light they choose, and him confirming it doesn't affect my opinion of him.
But when he uses that power to control the message FOR A MEDIA OUTLET, he crosses a line. If I had time, I'd read a few of the reports about Luntz and watch a few YouTube videos, and I could list dozens of instances of bias that flies in the face of balanced, objective analysis.
