Best Plan for Keeping Food on Your Table

0 votes

I recently purchased a Rabbit Hutch / Cage. With only three New Zealand Rabbits (1 Buck and 2 Does), you can breed enough to eat one six pound rabbit per day in nine weeks. Most bakerys and bread stores will sell a full buggy of out of date bread for about three dollars. This book, The Encyclopedia of Country Living, gives extremely detailed information about raising and care. I have included links below for excerpts and the best place I have found the book for sale. God Bless, Hacksaw.

This Link on Daily Kos about NAIS and other bills

coming up is very important to read, and I am posting it on top so it won't get overlooked!
http://www.dailykos.com:80/story/2009/2/14/212359/702/1004/6...
There are also some good comments posted below about the upcoming bills.

I mentioned this before...

But for new readers and to add to the discussion.

If railroads don't run for three days in America, there will be no food on store grocery shelfs.

You may ask, "What about the trucking industry?" Well, 70 % of that is intermodal container transport from trains. Also, trucks do not bring the coal to electrical plants for 50 % of America's electricity. That means 50 % less electricity for pumping fuel into trucks, refrigeration, and you know the rest.

Now you know why, The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 was put down by federal troops.

Bump for discussion.

Or

just eat raw vegetables and fruits - nuts and seeds.....

(sorry, old bread and bunnies didn't appeal)

Rabbit Starvation. Look it up.

Buying rabbits as an ongoing primary food source is not a good idea. You could die from eating nothing but rabbit.

The reason you can't live on rabbit,

alone, is because there is no fat in them. So, be sure to stock up on lots of fats! It is hard to get fats if living off the land/wild. These are the good fats to stock up on:
Lard
Butter (you can can it when it goes on sale)
Olive oil
Coconut oil

Yeah! We need more fat!

As we all know, the one thing most Americans need more of is fat in their diet.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist saying that. ;)

Actually, fat may be very hard to get

We bought a hand cranked oil press, we can squeeze oil out of wood chips now (OK, it is not quite that good!)

If you have no cow, and no store, you have no butter. If you don't butcher animals yourself, you have no lard. And while the CURRENT American has plenty on board, fat will be a serious nutrition problem if the electric door breaks at WalMart...

What are you going to cook without fat?

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

No, I agree.

I was just kidding. Starvation in America is a very real possibility if the logistical supply train breaks down.

What sort of press did you get? Do you have a link?

We hope to get one hooked to a bike this spring, so I can lose fat while I make fat - lol!

Do you have a farm?

Have you considered growing canola? You can burn it in diesel engines with little modification.

sure...

but its an AWESOME idea.

i had rabbit stew once. omg. YUMMY!!!

besides... ideally, you'll have a garden, know how to can and have chickens! :)

Good luck if HR814 and S425 pass and become law

These bills in Congress would require onerous red tape tracking of all food animals. Even people who keep a few rabbits or chickens will have to (to comply with the proposed law) tattle on themselves to the government every time they slaughter, or sell, or even move an animal from a fixed location. Electronic ear tags will be required for all animals. If these bills pass and become law, the result will be the end of family farms, with only giant agribusinesses remaining. Those who try to raise their own food animals without complying will be taking a huge risk. If a neighbor rats you out to the government, you'll be in big trouble as well as hungry.

Anyway, people who try to survive on rabbit end up starving. Something in the meat.

I just found that there are

I just found that there are four bills in Congress pushing NAIS:

Federal Registry on NAIS:

Time is running out to make comments on the Federal Register regarding the official animal numbering system. The White House said that rules and rulemaking would be put on hold, but it appears to be a very subjective thing, and it does not look this these rules are going to be subject to that. So, please, speak up, speak out.

Additionally there are four bills currently in varying phases of the legislative process, but all introduced, and would mandate NAIS irrespective of this rule.

HR 875: Creates the Food Safety Administration, contains mandates for NAIS, considers it already law. Fines of $1M and up to 10 years in jail, not exclusive. Allows the new Food Safety Administrator to set fees for annual registration of “establishments” (anyplace that comes into contact with food or its ingredients - and does NOT exclude private residences!!), issue orders and rules with the weight of law. This bill also cites executive order 12988, and so claims to pre-empt local and state laws to the contrary.

HR814: is NAIS.

S425: NAIS - for all food from seeds to fork.

HR 1105 is the Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009. This provides more than $14M for NAIS, including over $9M specifically for traceability.

Yes, and HR875. The NAIS has been a long time coming,

and it's almost here. It's hard to keep up with all the related stuff percolating in Congress. Thanks for the reminder,Nwind.

This is really serious, folks. I doubt we can deter our congress-critters from their folly, but we have to try.

Only if people are dumb

Only if people are dumb enough to comply with the law. We are not bound to obey illegal laws and animal identification and the theft of property that whole scheme entails is very, very illegal. I urge everyone to write, call and fax Congress about those bills, especially if you have someone on the House Ag Committee, as they are due to be discussed on March 11th. Best to cut the head off the monster as soon as possible.
