Imagine
by Ron Paul | Texas Straight Talk

Imagine for a moment that somewhere in the middle of Texas there was a large foreign military base, say Chinese or Russian. Imagine that thousands of armed foreign troops were constantly patrolling American streets in military vehicles. Imagine they were here under the auspices of “keeping us safe” or “promoting democracy” or “protecting their strategic interests.”

Imagine that they operated outside of US law, and that the Constitution did not apply to them. Imagine that every now and then they made mistakes or acted on bad information and accidentally killed or terrorized innocent Americans, including women and children, most of the time with little to no repercussions or consequences. Imagine that they set up check points on our soil and routinely searched and ransacked entire neighborhoods of homes. Imagine if Americans were fearful of these foreign troops, and overwhelmingly thought America would be better off without their presence.

Imagine if some Americans were so angry about them being in Texas that they actually joined together to fight them off, in defense of our soil and sovereignty, because leadership in government refused or were unable to do so. Imagine that those Americans were labeled terrorists or insurgents for their defensive actions, and routinely killed, or captured and tortured by the foreign troops on our land. Imagine that the occupiers’ attitude was that if they just killed enough Americans, the resistance would stop, but instead, for every American killed, ten more would take up arms against them, resulting in perpetual bloodshed. Imagine if most of the citizens of the foreign land also wanted these troops to return home. Imagine if they elected a leader who promised to bring them home and put an end to this horror.

Imagine if that leader changed his mind once he took office.

The reality is that our military presence on foreign soil is as offensive to the people that live there as armed Chinese troops would be if they were stationed in Texas. We would not stand for it here, but we have had a globe straddling empire and a very intrusive foreign policy for decades that incites a lot of hatred and resentment towards us.

According to our own CIA, our meddling in the Middle East was the prime motivation for the horrific attacks on 9/11. But instead of re-evaluating our foreign policy, we have simply escalated it. We had a right to go after those responsible for 9/11, to be sure, but why do so many Americans feel as if we have a right to a military presence in some 160 countries when we wouldn’t stand for even one foreign base on our soil, for any reason? These are not embassies, mind you, these are military installations. The new administration is not materially changing anything about this. Shuffling troops around and playing with semantics does not accomplish the goals of the American people, who simply want our men and women to come home. 50,000 troops left behind in Iraq is not conducive to peace any more than 50,000 Russian soldiers would be in the United States.

Shutting down military bases and ceasing to deal with other nations with threats and violence is not isolationism. It is the opposite. Opening ourselves up to friendship, honest trade and diplomacy is the foreign policy of peace and prosperity. It is the only foreign policy that will not bankrupt us in short order, as our current actions most definitely will. I share the disappointment of the American people in the foreign policy rhetoric coming from the administration. The sad thing is, our foreign policy WILL change eventually, as Rome’s did, when all budgetary and monetary tricks to fund it are exhausted.

"How can we justify to the unemployed and underemployed in the United States the incredible cost of maintaining a global empire?" - Dr. Ron Paul

Is it really so hard to immagine???

I completely agree with you Dr Paul!

The only thing I worry about is when our own ARMY and military is rolled out onto American Soil, how will I react?

Would I fund myself plotting against these very same solders if they were raiding entire neighborhoods, killing innocent people and taking them away for torture and incarceration for non-compliance??

I fear the horror you spoke of will soon be coming to a city near you as soon as our over bloated system comes to a grinding halt.

I fear the decisions I / we will have to make then just like the people of Iraq are having to make today.

I never thought it would have been possible in my country...I love America and cannot believe where our corrupt and failed leadership has brought us to.

My prayer is that these wonderful men and women of Third ARMY who make up our military will not be willing to follow orders...that they will act not like sheep but like American patriots when they are ordered to move against their fellow American brothers and sisters.

Why, Why, WHY

Why, Why, WHY is Dr. Paul the only one in Washington able to see the obvious? It is his sunglasses?

This brings back a scary memory,,,

Perhaps this story is a bit too personal, but I believe I know what it feels like to live in a country with an American military presence. I spent my junior year abroad in a town in Bavaria, Germany with a smallish American military base located just outside the college's campus. As I was not really part of any organized American exchange program, I lived at the campus mostly as a regular student, with a few friends from other countries, and many friends who were German. I dressed, spoke, and acted as German as possible...maybe even was a bit overly proud of the fact that I had successfully assimilated.

This was a small town and it was the early 80s...Ronald Reagan had just been elected...and a pretty safe place for a girl to walk alone, even late at night. So I thought nothing of it when I walked home from the town center from the local bar back to my dorm, just across the street from the military base, in the rain.

A tall and partially toothless American soldier approached me from behind. He kept asking me to "share my umbrella," and made many lewd gestures with his tongue, and said other things which frankly I don't remember. But I had the distinct impression that he felt that I was German, and I didn't understand him. I was very scared, and to this day do not know what he had in mind to do to me. I was a girl raised in the country and certainly not raised to be rude, but somehow I managed to scream at him that "I know why the Germans hate you in their country, and I wish you would go home too!" His response: "Where did you learn English?" I screamed back, "In OHIO!" Hard to forget the shock on his face...

I lived in this town for a year, and frankly had no clue why it was so important for the Americans to be there. All I could see was the resentment it bred among the people. A few months later, someone set off a bomb in the officers' club, which did a couple thousand dollars' worth of damage. It barely made the news, so who knows what else is going on out there in American occupation-land?

Still, for all these years, I've felt guilty about getting in the face of an American soldier and screaming at him. Thank you Dr. Paul...I don't need to imagine anymore. I realize I lived a little piece of it.

I can only imagine

what a scarey experience that was! Thanks for sharing.

Imagine...

Imagine that those responsible for 9/11 and the horrific police state tactics which followed were and in many cases still are in our government...

You don't need to convince people the US govt did 9/11.

There's plenty of other stuff pretty much everybody agrees they did or are working on to get them thrown out.

So it doesn't matter whether they did 9/11 or not and whether you could convince the people or not. What matters is getting the government fixed, not whether people agree on the reasons.

(Unless it's more important to you to convince everybody that 9/11 was a US government conspiracy than for us all to live in freedom.)
