421 guests on right now. Are you scared away by the content on DP ?

There has been some discussion about certain subjects scaring new people away from the Daily Paul.

I would like to hear from some of the newer guests. Do you like the variety of subjects here, or should it be censored to just Ron Paul related subjects?

I personally like the variety of content AND opinions.

What say you?

It's been my observation...

that sometimes we humans give to much power to things that probably don't need so much. Maybe this is an area that doesn't need to have so much energy/resources attributed to it. (although, if someone could find a way to harness the energy of fear, worry, regret, invalidation, revenge, pride, etc., that would be some renewable source!)
ps I love DailyPaul, warts and all

Big boys and girls

can make up their own minds about what they read and what they want to click on.
They don't get "scared" by content of posts.

And the idea that gets floated around here from time to time, that we should avoid certain subject matter, just so it doesn't "scare away" people who are uninformed about the real goings-on in this nation is ludicrous, IMO.
They come here to get the info about what's going on.
If they wanted the official sanitized media pap, they'd tune in to Fox News or CNN.
The fact that the come here means that they want to get the info that comes from outside the brainwashing channels.

You know what BigT ...

I agree ....

And I bet most that have issues with certain topics would probably let it go except for one thing ...

With regards to the controversial topics like CTs and the like ...

99% of the proponents of these conspiracies ...

deflect criticism with personal attacks instead of logical statements.

I have no problem with inside job posts as long as they are not on the front page ...

I do have a problem when a subject is being debated and then it devolves into "Shill" calling or worse. And most of the time it is initiated by the CT proponents.

Rhino,

what page the posts appear on is related to how many people are reading them.
Relegating posts "you don't like" to the 2nd page, is like trying to come off as "reasonable" because you only approve of "censorship LITE".
It seems to me that once we establish who's a hooker, then it just comes down to discussing what price.

Personal attacks are against code of conduct, and the mods are responsible for moderating that. I don't like personal atttacks, but I get angry occasionally and fall prey to it myself. I do try to restrain myself for the most part.

And the truth is that there ARE shills on here, and Michael is VERY TOLERANT of them too, because he doesn't want to censor people. It's the responsibility of each reader to determine "who's who in the zoo".

In the past I was not a blogger.

But I learned here at the Daily Paul, what is a "troll". Actually took me over a month, but it was fun learning from the "pros" in how to identify trolls and shills.
I need this site for health!

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

CHA-CHING!

The whole trolls/shills

The whole trolls/shills nonsense has driven this site into a ditch. It used to be fun here, now bullies seem to have way too much influence over what is allowed. It's sad. Thank goodness RP doesn't bother coming here.

i agree. so many bullies shouting troll. the cliques are ...

embarrassing. they wield their power of belonging to a group and use it to pound individuals into the ground.

thank goodness dr paul doesnt come here.

You said ...

"what page the posts appear on is related to how many people are reading them."

That is not true ... I have seen articles on the front that never got a single response. And when it goes onto the front there is an implied endorsement.

Because I disagree with this endorsement does not mean I believe in censorship lite, I just want a level playing field.

Mr. Nystrom was very clear that no non RP related subjects should get posted there, but they still do.

For example; the complete fabrication made by AJ is on the front page. This is an implied endorsement. I have no problem with it being posted, but I do have a problem that Mr. Nystrom endorses the validity of this post, because it harms the cred of dp.

Rhino, when you say "complete fabrication"...

...please do not state it as in implied truth when you do not know it to be.

As far as I know

All new posts appear on the front page, until they drop off if they get no responses. If they get put back to the top without responses, then somebody at the website is doing that. As far as I know.

You might want to check that thread which you call "fabrication".
Mike Lawson has verified it with the outfit that released the brochure.
It's not fabrication. AJ was right. At least, according to Mike Lawson, who I have no reason to believe he's lying about it. He called them.

Sorry ...

I was talking about the AJ comments that the FBI was calling his office.

And ...

I am talking about the articles to the left that get stickied to the page when you first come to the site.

I would guess the reason they are even on this site is because

they are interested in the content.

In order to participate in free speech you must be willing to grant it to others as well.

That's the point

I'm not new here, but I did

I'm not new here, but I did stop checking in for a while because 1) the tone changed after the election, and a lot of people on here were just acting childish trying to pick fights here in the great anonymous web; 2) the content seemed to get just silly there for a while; 3) the tone of the commenting began to rub off on me, and I found myself wanting to vociferously defend myself and others. So, I stayed away for a while.

I came back about a week ago to see what kind of stuff Republicae and Kevin Tuma had been posting and to see what Rhino had to say about the markets.

True, I don't care for a few people here, some of whom have already commented whinily on this thread, but I can overlook that if they present good content and good debate. But I don't like it when I or others get mocked by anonymous screenname personages simply because we do not share all the same views. Those people don't seem to really be interested in personal liberty, at least not for anyone but themselves. Supporting personal liberty for one's own self, in order not to be simply a solipsist, ideologically requires acceptance of the liberty of others. Some people here seem too puerile to evidence that type of commitment to liberty.

I also don't really care for some of the content that seems to constantly get brought up here. Some of the most active forums are ones that make DPers, from my perspective on the more moderate side of things, seem like a bunch of fringe kooks. Not that the DP needs to be censored or moderated more heavily, etc. - I just think it would helpful if people didn't use the DP exclusively as their own little soapbox for their pet views. And I KNOW it would be helpful if those people didn't assign me or others seeking moderation in pursuit of liberty the title of "troll" or "neocon infiltrator" or some other such foolishness.

I wish people here the best, even those whom I don't really like. And I hope people keep posting content, even the stuff I don't agree with. I hope the DP can be a healthy forum for the responsible pursuit of liberty for all people.

I think there are still problems, as you do.

I'm not sure if there's a solution, however.

We started moderating the site in January, and I think it improved the quality of the posts to some degree. But only to a certain degree. After three months, the system abusers know what our real moderating guidelines are, and they know how to push buttons, bully others, and participate in endless flame wars without getting nailed. This may go on forever, because I think Michael feels heavy-handed moderating would destroy his site, and I think he's correct. We have to have freedom of expression here, within reason.

What has happened is that, through no fault of Michael Nystrom's, this has become a 'political site in name only'. It is now almost 100% off topic.

Last year, I thought it was almost too political--too 'on topic'--without enough discussion of what's really going on with the establishment and the CFR, and way too much false optimism in general. I knew after the New Hampshire primary that Ron Paul would lose the GOP nomination, but I had to bite my tongue for eight months, even after Super Tuesday made it super obvious, because huge numbers of posters were promoting the idea that Ron Paul would still win, on the theory that his followers would seize control of the GOP convention. Does anyone remember all that stuff? The 'politics posse' was firmly in control, and people were massively overconfident in our ability to effect change through the political system.

But we've spun an entire 180 degrees since the election.

Not only is the political crowd no longer in control of the Forum, most posters have given up all hopes of effecting ANY change whatsoever through the political system. We went from "we're winning--we have them where we want them!" to "see ya at FEMA camp." We don't even talk about the economy collapsing as much as we did last year--because last year, it was a theory rejected by the mainstream--but now it's come true, and our side has been largely proven right. And the talking heads have Ron Paul on all their shows, and people all over the spectrum are acknowledging him. How boring. It must all be a trick.

At this point, I wish the Forum would become more political again. But I think people are too discouraged. It's not just this Forum. It's all over the movement.

Self moderation aka the digg +/- would go a long way

Digg does is, youtube does it, slashdot does it, why not DailyPaul?? The more informed your audience, the better it works. I would expect it to work exceedingly well here.
There are many plug in modules to do this in Drupal (the software running this site).

Here is one that is interesting and might make for a nice modernization of the DailyPaul:
http://www.drigg-code.org/pages/what_is_drigg

That is interesting.

There would probably be some abuse of the feature as well, from people using multiple screennames. But it sounds like an intriguing idea.

WE had something like that

in the old days with the "Flag" feature.

The people who believed in free speech never used it.
The trolls who wanted to control site content used it in coordinated efforts to kill threads and posts.
Then others retaliated.

It was a disaster.

It might be better if anyone

It might be better if anyone posting under multiple aliases had all accounts closed save one. This might be discovered by sifting through the IP information.

I've been wanting

that for a long time.

I think that would be a very good thing for this site to do.

I suggested it a few times over the summer, when the troll wars were in full force, and the same morons were coming back the day after they were banned, under a different screen name.

Doing the IP thing would really clean up this site.

Please suggest it to

Please suggest it to Michael. I think everyone would benefit.

You should rephrase the question

Of course they are not scared away by the content on DP, if they are visiting DP. I think they are intimidated from commenting by people like you Jefferson and your Truther Bully Brigade. You and your cronies have created a hostile environment where anyone who disagrees with your ilk is attacked and harassed. People see your behavior, Jefferson, and decide it is not worth the trouble of posting here.

Ahh FelatioTheGate has shown his face...
