Opinions on the new cigarette tax?

I went in today expecting to pay my $3 to $4 for a pack as usual.
Cashier: "your total comes to $6.18"
Me: Odd facial expression, eh.....Nevermind then and I walked out.
I knew there was going to be a .70 cents or so addition to the cost but not that much. Ridiculous in my opinion.
And you self rolling tobacco smokers, you're not off the hook.
April first tobacco, rolling papers, filters are being doubled and even tripled in some cases.
Average price for 1lb of tobacco is usually $15-25, expect to add a $24 tax for each pound.

$6.18? We were paying that YEARS ago in NJ! Currently, I am "quit".
Been researching, apparently cigarettes are usually made of a blend of different tobaccos and you need to learn how to cure it. Hurry, I expect seeds will become illegal, heavily taxed and/or regulated by the FDA as soon as the idea occurs to them!

Also, regarding e-cigarettes: I heard something about the FDA taking control of that too (nicotine = drug), so if your considering them, you better hurry.

If the tax were based on the actual costs due to second hand smoking and insurance related claims and solely for offsetting these costs, then I'm not opposed. However, these taxes are generally used for other purposes, and I'm completely opposed to taxing smokers to pay for things like education, roads, things like that. Then, it becomes discriminatory.
Also, if the state is so intent on taxing "sin," then why not tax the Smithfield foods that dumps tons of pig excrement into rivers, for the purposes of cleaning up that environmental hazard. Why not tax coal power plants for belching mercury emissions? Why not tax antibiotic hand sanitizers for the health related costs of treating MRSA?
End result is that these cigarette taxes almost always are unfairly designed to go after an undesirable element of society. In other words, let's protect the minority interests that we like (handicapped people, hispanics, african americans, seniors, and then discriminate against the minority interests we don't like (smokers, white males, etc).
Time to flush the "Tobacco NAZIs" ...
down the commode of history. I've been planning a video for two months now, demonstrating the effect of such a tax rate on the cost of cell phone usage, since cell phone usage is MORE hazardous than smoking. Just not enough hours in the day.

I've rolled my own cigs for years and I paid 9 dollars for a tin of tobacco. Now they are 24 dollars. How can you tax something more than 100%. I was so Pissed I quit for 3 months now of course I've fallen off the wagon but I do plan to quit again very soon.

just make them illegal. Or I should say they should make it illegal to make a billion dollar business off of an addictive substance. But the government makes to much from the taxes to ever do that.

This is a ass backward mentality. If the plan works to make people quit, then what happens when the revenue stream of the funding for poor people's health insurance starts to decrease. That's right- everyone gets taxed to makeup the shortfall. ????????????????????????????????????????

To fund the plan they needed over 20 million new smokers
by April to begin with as I recall from reading a month or so ago. It can't be paid for by smokers entirely right from the start. Michigan is trying to fund its budget shortfalls via smoking tax increases in addition to the Federal increase which is why a carton is now $90

Hi..Im Misfit4Peace And Im A Smoker
Im 45..been smoking more years than not...just had a check up...my lungs are healthy...the rest of me isnt but they are. I am a 5 time cancer surviver..and my cancer was NOT caused by smoking.
I have tried..really really tried to quit....The gum makes me want to throw up...the patches swell up..really big..whatever part of the body I put it on and after a week..effect my heart....the pills..nope cant take them..they have an anti depression medicie in them which sends me into depression so bad...well..lets say Im not ready to die yet....I tried cold turkey and can do great for about 4 hours...the longest Ive gone is 3 months...but instead of it getting easier..it got harder..I couldnt eat or sleep and got the shakes so bad I couldnt hold on to things..I went back to smoking..and it cleared up that problem.
This tax is suppose to help children get insurance..well..Im a mom..but my kid is grown up..married..and has a child..she doesnt smoke..neither does her husband...and they pay for my g/son to have insurance.
I love my g/son dearly...and would do anything for him...
But this is unfair..to me..and every single smoker and non smoker out there.
I might start looking into getting my cigs from the indians...they dont pay federal tax...but right now..I have switched to Tahoe..not the best but not the worst out there...yesterday they was 2.24pk while Basic and Winston was 4.25.......
As this tax took effect...one thing crossed my mind..is Oposer (obama) smoking in the Whitehouse?

carton runs out. Anyway, the new self-extinguishing cigarettes suck. They hurt my chest and dry up my nose fluids.
These scumbags even ruined the relaxation and enjoyment a periodic cigarette would bring.

Some people that i have known have had better luck quitting when they had less than a pack left. Leave your final pack sitting out in the sun so that they go stale. That way, when you 'slip', you end up smoking a very harsh and nasty taking cig. For many people, the security of knowing that they still have a small cig stash 'just in case' provides the security necessary to be able to successfull quit. If you try to quit after you have smoked all of your cigs and realize that you are constantly thinking about runningt the gas station to get a 'security' pack, this may be a helpful approach.

With the increase in tobacco tax there is also the added sales tax on the tax. Here in Michigan 6% sales tax means almost 4 cents on the new tobacco tax.
I am quitting when I smoke the rest of what I already have on hand. I refuse to give the government anymore money.

Its the final pinch before they go bankrupt IMO. It is a way to separate the haves from the have-nots as well. If you cant afford medical insurance yet still spend $400/month on cigs, then you are playing a valuable role in the population issue*

Our government will give the cig industry a bailout!! with our tax money. :o( I can see it now, million's of smoker's with nicotine withdrawl marching with there pitchforks and cigarette lighters on washington. It wont be a pretty sight.
well part of the TV story was that shop keepers now want police
protection. "The price is so high in an environment where everyone has hardly any money that we now fear being robbed for a pack of smokes" I thought as I watched the story....Unintended Consequences....now they need more police. How about a nice booze tax to pay for the additional police requirements?

Run a Google search for tobbaco seed. It should pull up 4-5 companies. One of them sell a 100% herbal cigarett. 4.00 a pack with out tobacco tax, as it is not tobbaco. The idea is that you can smoke all of these you want, without getting the nicotine and other chemicals. You can keep up the "habit" while detoxing your body, quiting after a few weeks should be much easier as you will no longer "need" the nicotine, ect. I have ordered mine, however, I also ordered 1000 tobacco seed and papers with filters and a 'filling'/rolling machine. I see tobbaco becoming the biggest black maret opportunity in some time (of course for bartering and not saling...RIGHT?).

everybody is capable of doing it
after about 3 weeks it becomes a lot easier

and you can find the seeds for sale all over the net. You just can't sell it. Of course barter is an idea.
