I am running for my town election.

0 votes

I support a lot about what Ron Paul says and i am running for selectman in my town. I can honestly say that if it were not for the good doctor that i would have never found my passion for politics 2 years ago, damn that youtube video. :) but, This is my first step towards changing this country. This will be a long road but i will meet all the Ron Paul Republicans at the end. Please leave positive comments and let me know what you think! :P

EDIT: I am only 19 years old and i am in the process of getting a degree. For my age this is something that is unheard of in my town and i think this is the first step in my path to changing this country, Today is my town, tomorrow is my county, then states, and possibly national. I may not get there when the doctor is in office but the impression he has made on the young people in this country leaves me optimistic about the future.

Spell/Grammar check on your campaign site

Good luck! I hope you win.

I found some grammar errors on your campaign site. Please check it thoroughly and revise. BIG impression sinker, IMO.

My advice to people on this

My advice to people on this forum:

I am only a little bit older than Mr. Touhey...I wish I could do something as courageous and bold as he has done, alas I have not the opportunity to do so.

I would like to help though, and I'm sure many among you would like to help as well. I do not have money to give, but I do have a voice. I'll be commenting on your local stories in your support. Thank you for doing this. I'd encourage others here on DP to do the same.

I live in Edmonton, Canada

I live in Edmonton, Canada and I know of one fellow, age nineteen, who also ran for office a number of years back. Unless I'm mistaken, he was running for a seat in the local Legislative Assembly. While he didn't win, he did come a strong second; a result that floored a significant number of people, myself included.

What I realized from his bid was just how crucial getting involved, getting name/media recognition, and soliciting house to house all are. He made trips to my school, had plenty of media interviews and ran a highly professional campaign. If you're going to win this race, you're going to need to go above and beyond your competitors- that means going hardcore.

Best of luck.

James

Congrats - Let me suggest, if you hold Ron Paul's ideals, you talk about freedom and liberty. What did Ron Paul say that got you hooked? That's what you use to hook others on freedom.

About your site-you say:
"To put it bluntly,James's career goal is to serve the public to the best of his ability and in the most ethical way possible. "
To me, this is rhetorical. What sets you apart from any other politician? Your "career goal" is touted by most politicians. Jame's career goal is to put freedom and liberty back in American families by following the constitution.

Your comment about ethics - most ethical way as possible I would not say. Character counts sounds much better and implies others have none.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Have no idea what a town selectman does and if it is constitutional.

Thats kind of where i am at.

Thats kind of where i am at. Not sure how i want to tote my ron paul ideals in a town selectman race... its like a conflicting idea. I really think town government is the only legitimate body that is worth paying taxes to. I really want to get in unscathed but don't want to sound preachy, Right now im the only one with any type of support base and i am worlds ahead of my competitors. But i will update with these suggestions. Thanks alot!

www.jamestouhey2009.com

Just a update, i have a campaign site up and running. donations are appreciated :P

www.jamestouhey2009.com

does anyone know how i can

does anyone know how i can raise campaign funds? I only need a small amount for lawn signs, but i am a poor college kid and have no money. I really want to be competitive but ive already started to see opposition yard signs.

So anyone have any fund raising ideas?

Seriously, pick up the phone.

Call your whole family, then your friends, then every business you go to. Once you've done that, go door to door introducing yourself and asking if folks would like to make a donation (if they like you). Clarification---go door to door with a republican voter list (available at your local board of elections). Keep track of who you visit, rate them 1's, 2's and 3's (1=Definite vote for you 2=maybe vote for you 3=definitely not voting for you)
Send 1's a letter the next day and ask them to volunteer, donate, poll watch, whole bit. Send 2's a letter the next day thabking them for meeting with you and that you hope you'll win their confidence. Leave 3's alone.
Your organization will grow quickly this way and you'll have a great contact list to keep working through.
This works real nice for a county race too ;)

Yard signs

Make Homemade signs. They are much more effective. Make a couple stencils and just add paint.

Good luck! We are all pulling for you.

Suggestion

Have someone as your "scheduler" that handles the calendar. It's very handy to say get with my scheduler than saying no to an appearance. They can be the bad guy and give you some time to decide.

Wonderful!

I hope you win, hon...

Municipal politicians eat their own

I'd highly recommend starting at the state legislature or county level rather than nit-picky small town politics. You can agree with Dr Paul all day long but he's in congress and doesn't have to worry much about things that effect people directly on a day to day basis. Aim higher.

any level you seek is where you should be

the principles of liberty, personal freedom and respect for individual rights apply to EVERY elected official down to dog catcher. Local governments need to be influenced and lead by people willing to risk unpopular stands to protect us from the smaller version of the nanny state.
Go for it, take it as far as you can and stay free of outside influences/power as much as possible.
By filing and running you have already WON.
People will listen to you, so speak your mind and promote all those ideas that have been awakened in you.

I have every intention at

I have every intention at moving up to state level as soon as my rep retires (he is 63). At the moment i feel that being 19 and still in the process of getting a degree that this would be manageable to my schedule and a step in the right direction. Trust me, i see the potential and i have the fullest expectation to reach out and take greatness. But i have often found that change comes from the bottom and if you don't have money to fill the gap (college students) this is where you begin. I suppose i may be so bold to say that i am getting a 4 year head start.

He’s starting at the right level.

Just like writing a paper… You want to start at the beginning; not somewhere near the middle. If we have any chance of taking back our nation, the job has to be done right. That’s the ONLY way. Got it?

Politics is not a company that you move up in

Starting at the county level is certainly not the middle and far less trying than municipal politics. Trust the former mayor on this one. My friend who started as a delegate at the state house is still in office and lives in relative peace. I'm not saying nobody should run for town office, I'm just trying to look out for one of my brothers here. Municipal politics is the worst kind in the world and I wish it on no one.

I'd be happy to have someone like him in my town

Our city of 80,000 residents is in debt to the tune of 50 million. (chico,ca)

It's ridiculous.

County employees on average make 2x of what citizens make working for small business. This is usery on the public.

I should mention you can buy a nice affordable house here for $250k.
Principals all make 110k + at the local level
Cops make $80+k
Office staff make $60-75k
Retirement plans for all this stuff too...

There is a huge local opposition to this stuff while most people who are more educated are lucky to make $50-60k with a college degree.

I'm so sick of out of control government. This problem starts with the local city councils not putting their foot down. This is where these people should have automatic 25% salary reductions across the board for anyone making more than $60k.

He can control property

He can control property taxes, protect private property, control spending, set the budget, oversee the police department......this is small government at it's finest. Go for it.

County, County, County, County

And then there's a court system, a board of elections, business licensing, and a whole host of very important things that really effect people. In general, municipal governments are about like condo associations; they are basically property managers. I'm telling you, this guy would be so much better off starting at the county or state level.

Obama was vetted in The New Party as an organizer

Sarah Palin started at the PTA... geesh.

He's a a perfect age and a great place to start to learn Robert's Rules of Order, and whos who, and he'll get experience. He might spend two years doing this and then move to another state and run for a state job...

Like Obama and Palin and Bush and Clinton...Ron Paul!!!

If he reads this I would like to impress on him that he VOLUNTEER to work at organizations pancake breakfasts and events. That is a very good way to meet very solid people of the community and gain support.
