Presidential candidates will do almost anything for publicity. But Ron Paul's appearance in Sacha Baron Cohen's upcoming Bruno movie suggests he draws the line at making sex tapes with gay Austrian TV hosts.

In a five-minute scene, comedian Cohen tries—and fails—to seduce the Texas congressman and former Republican presidential candidate in a Washington hotel room. A spokeswoman for Paul confirmed the appearance but declined to discuss details, which were provided by two people who attended a test screening last week.

They Spelled The Name Right

The statements attributed to the campaign spokespeople seemed to be making the best of a clumsy situation. I'm proud of them.

I've never really enjoyed much of the most uncomfortable aspects of Cohen's humor ... the empathy factor is too intense for my taste ... I never liked Alan Funt much either. But at this point I think we need to be empathetic ... laughing with others helps keep them from laughing at us and ours.

We should understand how to avoid taking ourselves so seriously so others can better relate when we are being serious.

Even a bad gag doesn't mean we become bad sports ... He caught us with his pants down ... smile ... you're on candid camera.

Please, have a sense of humor

Cohen has lampooned just about everybody under the sun. First he's called a racist for making fun of white rapper wanabees in Britian, then he's called a sexist for punking that group of feminists in New York, then he's called a wacky liberal for making fun of some social conservatives, and then liberals freak out when he attacks Chomsky and Nader. Now these orthodex Jews are angry at being chased by his gay character.

But the fact is, he never really denigrates any of these people. He merely plays a part, and the audience generally has enough sense to know that the camera can make anyone look like a bit of a fool. Cohen's characters themselves look foolish, so in some ways you get to see very serious minded people react to an unbalanced lunatic.

Ron Paul is my favorite politician of all time, He's honest, true to his principles, true to the Constitution, and even tempered. He's also very tough and can take a hit. Cohen takng away his dignity? Give me a break. Sure, Cohen probably leans left, but he's skewered plenty of well intentioned liberals. It's called HUMOR.

Hey, If Paul is a prominent figure in this film

Doesn't that mean that they would have to pay him money?

The good doctor makes a cameo in the trailer (well, just barely a sec as he is storming out of a bedroom):

Oh god, I can already see the pieces falling into place, where the reaction to the prank is going to be more embarrassing than the prank itself.

So, they played a practical joke on Dr. Paul, so what? Let's not take it personal. When people overreact, it makes us look insecure. And I think that hurts our image far more that any joke could. Didn't your mothers teach you this shit? ;)

"sticks and stones"....

Have a cheap laugh at our hero, and move on. It's not that big a deal.

kinda misleading

Just read a post from lew rockwell's blog, which describes the scene from the premier. It says that paul tried to leave the room as bruno exposed himself but was blocked, paul hollered get out of here and pushed him aside, mentioning that he was queerer than blazes, (paraprase of the post). of course Ron can not be viewed as insensitive or rude, bruno on the other hand...

Contrary to Jesse Bentons' statement in the article link,

I don't think it is funny at all!

Benton should have done everything he could to prevent such a degrading situation from happening like that.

Whoever this creep (Sacha whatever) is, that makes those degrading films which are not funny in the least, and I am sure that is not his real name, should have been banned from having anything to do with the good Doctor.

It is pretty clear this was a zionist hit on Dr. Paul for advocating no financial support to Israel or any other country for that matter.

Its nothing short of repulsive!

I've seen a couple of Cohen's previous

works, they're outrageously irreverent and he loves to skewer narrow-minded bigots. Maybe his people hoped they could entrap a stereotypical religious zealot/conservative, not at all understanding Dr. Paul's principles and humanitarian vision. I don't see this as anything to do with Zionism.

If Paul said "queer" rather than "weird" or "let me out of here", as some seem to have heard, enemies of Campaign for Liberty may try to spin the episode as anti-gay; but I expect most people wouldn't think it too damning for someone of Dr. Paul's generation to use an un-PC word in a sudden, startling event.

There are so many

And there are so many narrow-minded bigots to make fun of.

I agree Anisha

Dr. Paul did'nt know the script he's was about to encounter and if he was told what was going to happen, surely Dr Paul would have said No Thanks! Pretty sick of them to do that to him.

People worldwide support Dr. Paul too :-)

Every year is a year for Ron Paul!

Did you ever watch candid camera?

Same thing.

First article slate hs done on Ron Paul

Slate HATES Ron Paul. Forst time I was banned from Slate I had changed my nick name to RonPaul08.. the senond and final time is because I talked about Ron Paul. I have never been banned from a site, and I know Slate banned me for Ron Paul, and then I hear the last editor quit.. whatever. Slate LOVES Obama.. rad it... its all excuses for Obama and HATE Ron Paul

Wish he had picked on someone else.

I think by the time this movie comes out everyone will be too broke to go and see it. If it attracts gays to the freedom movement it will be worth the embarassment.
