Self Defense Firearm
I own a 12 gauge that I use to deer hunt with and presently purchased #00 and #4 buckshot for home self defense.
Even though, who knows what the lawmakers will get away with concerning ammo, I still have to make some choices.
I have no problem knocking down deer with a lower priced bow and shotgun so I find I do not need to have the best nor can I afford it. But, pointing out pro's and con's of lower versus higher priced firearms is helpful in case I can pick up a higher priced one as second hand.
I read much about firearms that are dependable in less than clean environments, if that came to be. And, abundance of ammo for a particular model.
Assault rifles do not seem to be a recommended choice.
It seems .308 rifle is the most common recommended.
A .38 revolver and .9mm pistol seem to be about an even split. The revolver being more dependable than a pistol that has more parts, seems to be mentioned often.
Can we have a discussion concerning these choices, recommend a make and model, or other model recommendations?
One site that helped out based on ammo supply is below. Scroll down the page about 1/4 way. Guns to Grab New Ammo Section. It goes over different calibers and comments on which ones to go with.

I live in the suburbs (New York State) and have access to steep hill country of the Appalachia's near the Pennsylvania border.
It seems the, 'handgun for the bedroom, shotgun above the door, and rife for hunt/and long range', makes sense. So my needs are a handgun and rifle.
Thank you.

Romy AK's for $600.
Too bad there was hardly any 7.62x 39 ammo to be found there.
Much info here
been reading and digesting.
It's too bad that shotgun shells are $1 a piece.

The topic is self defense
and I like the old saying about having a rifle is basically going on the offensive. You become the hunter. You have a self defense gun already with the 12 gauge so long as the barrel isn't like a goose gun. Short barrels and stocks work well for home defense (remember 18.5"). I recommend buckshot only. Your walls will need to be fixed regardless of what you hit them with. Use bird shot for.....well.....birds.
Secondly for home defense is the trusty sidearm and my rec is to echo the others talking about either an auto in 9 mil or .45 or a revolver in .38 or .357 used law enforcement trade ins can still be had for decent prices. S&W, Taurus, Ruger even Rossi I've shot very with pleasant results.
As for a semi-auto, get a 9mm or .45acp. I personally don't like the .40 cal just because in my opinion it tries to compromise too much getting a high cap mag with just a bit more power than a 9mm and ammo is more expensive and less common. Pretty much all special forces and private guys I know shoot .45acp. I love a 9mm for cheaper ammo, shooting fun, and the fact that it gets the job done too. S&W and Ruger I've had most experience with and you get a solid gun for a decent price.
is the view
that a rifle is considered an offensive type firearm, generally categorized as such?

Get a glock
I love my Glock 17 (9mm). It just works. I'm thinking of getting a more compact model in .45.
I also like the Smith & Wesson M&P line of pistols. They are more ergonomic than the Glock. I don't like how they don't fire without a magazine inserted though.
I have some AR15's. These guns are a lot of fun to shoot and customize, however they are complex machines with many moving parts.
My advice: Get a semi-auto pistol that can hold at least 10 rounds in the magazine and doesn't have an exposed hammer or safety.
Just recently
I just recently purchased a Springfield Armory XDm in a .40 caliber. I'm extremely happy with it. The durability tests done on them have put them through everything including being fired with no oil, freezing, filled with sand, thrown underwater, run over by a truck, not cleaned for 10k rounds, etc.
I've put about 1000 rounds through it so far, and I'm definitely happy with my purchase.

Here is another shotgun and based on the AK, you can get drum clips for it too and 30 round clips....pure sweetness. http://www.saiga-12.com/

I know most of you will not like my comment..
I have posted previously in regards to weapons and guns, but now that Ron Paul Supporters have been labeled "Terrorists" in MO, honestly I would not be so proud to display the type of weapons you have in your homes. Who knows who trolls this forum. Just a word to the wise, thats all folks. Just call me a party pooper, and let this thread die.
There are
gun clubs, the NRA and even 4h clubs that talk guns all the time. We are not talking about forming malitias or any other sort of armed group or event. Calm down. We are talking hunting and self defense. I guess we should be careful not to mention the c word (constitution)
I love gun threads
I'm probably on so many lists already, I just don't care anymore if some little coward hiding in some little cubicle is jotting down my DP user name.
That being said, my portfolio is heavily weighted in 9mm, .223 and .22WRM, and I round it out with .45 ACP and 12ga.
I love to shoot the Taurus 92/99 in 9mm, metallic and relatively heavy frame so the recoil from the slide is minimal, and very reasonably priced at around $565 (I got a new one for $450 total, ordered through a pawn shop/dealer). The .45ACP is my favorite to shoot, but it can be expensive if you don't reload.
I really like the .22 Winchester rimfire magnum (WRM) because it is relatively cheap to shoot and delivers so much more energy than the .22 long rifle (LR). Great round for rifle or pistol, but the pistol should have at least a 4-inch barrel to take full advantage of the available energy.
My shotgun choice is tactical pump action 12ga. Just the sound of a round being chambered in that weapon can cause an intruder to suddenly lose bowel control.
My .223 choice is the Ruger Mini 14. It will chamber hundreds of rounds of the worst Russian ammo like Wolf and Brown Bear without mishandling. Getting difficult to find brass-cased .223 ammo. All ammo is getting harder to find.
I don't mind your comment, but don't agree with it.
We're just talking about survival and self-defense guns. That's very mainstream. It's a matter of self-reliance.
Don't worry, if anyone goes off advocating violence, it will be moderated. Talking about guns is harmless. We fear too much here already, IMHO.

Remember there is some wisdom in the old saying...
Fear the man who only owns one gun, for that man knows how to use it.
I couldn’t find a definitive author of the original statement, but it speaks to the man that only shoots one gun. When you only shoot one gun and learn exactly how to aim it, how to hold it, you become extremely sharp with that specific weapon...
In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.

Just got my Lancaster Ak-47
Just got my Lancaster Ak-47 today. Only got to run 40 rounds through it, but so far excellent. Ammo is hard to find, Ive been stocking up in advance.
Love my Glock 19 9mm. VERY reliable firearm and 9mm is easy to find and cheap.
Love my Mossberg 500 12 Gauge. Got plenty of 00 and slugs.
Got a 45 auto for short
Got a 45 auto for short range knock downs. AK-47 Underfolder for mid range firepower and a Mosin Nagant 91-30 for the long range heavy hitters.

Well, since everyone else has an opinion:
Maybe I can throw my hat in the ring. I have a little of everything.
A nice 12 gauge shotgun that is loaded with the first shot coming out as bird shot to either stop, slow them down, or inflict serious injury. The next two coming out are # 00 buck and the last two are rifle slugs. That's if I have to grab the shot gun. I also have two 44 magnum revolvers if needed and a 357 magnum. Also a 44 magnum rifle if I have to reach out a little ways to finish the job. Now, upstairs is a single shot 12 gauge as a last grab. But for the night stand is a double action 38 special. I prefer something like that because if you are awoken and feel you should grab something, there is nothing to fiddle with and it will work without failure, jamming, or much of any thought at all where an auto pistol may hang up or jam. Plus you may be groggy and you don't need to be fooling with something too much.
But there is a 45 auto near by just in case you run out of ammo in the 38. I would suggest that if you have a 357, not using 38 ammo in it unless you have no 357 ammo. Reason being is that there is a thing called coning that happens if you do it too much. Since the 38 is shorter, powder can build up on the inside of the cylinder where the 357 shell bottoms out and that has been shown to cause cracking in it over a period of time. I have actually experienced this once myself with shooting allot of 44 specials through a 44magnum. I believe though, that you should get what you are very comfortable with and TRAIN with it as much as possible. Experience is the key. Good luck.
Take a look at this website also. A friend sent it to me today and it looks pretty interesting. This guy wants to give away handguns.

Revolvers are definitely BACK.
They seem to outsell semi-autos at gun shows nowadays. It's hard to find a snubby .38 at a gun table--they sell like hotcakes.
I'm like you--I prefer magnum revolvers--especially the big N frame Smith & Wesson magnums. I don't have large hands, but I have enough red meat on my frame to handle the recoil.
My favorite firearm--and I was monumentally stupid enough to sell one once, so I'm now shopping for a replacement---is the old venerable Smith & Wesson Highway Patrolman, with a six-inch barrel. This gun is simply a work of art. With its tapered barrel, it has perfect ergonomics. (I think bull barrels are only good on four-inch barrels.)

Sounds like you've thought through different scenarios and have
a plan. That's just as important as having a weapon for defense.

Absolutely:
I have been in a few situations that have taken some serious thought on how to handle them properly. The one situation I didn't count on though was my 14 year old (who has been shooting since he was five) getting in to my night stand shooting a hole in his leg. I will be seeing an attorney tomorrow. Never in my wildest imagination did I ever think he would do something so dumb. But it happened and now we deal with it. I lock it up when I get up and get it back out when I go to bed.

In my opinion...
Since the threat of our own police and soldiers may be what we have to defend against, I would purchase whatever they are carrying. 9mm, 5.56 etc.
That way you can just lift the ammo and weapons from them and I'm sure that there will be an abundance that you can recover.
Personally; however, I prefer a simple .380 because I'm good with it (as is my wife), low recoil and decent stopping power after a couple rounds on target.
my girl can't handle the recoil
from the 12 gauge. She is being positive about a handgun and low recoil.

You might also consider putting a good pair of Pachmayr
rubberized grips on a handgun. It can really cut the recoil effect.

You hunt deer with a shotgun?
That's manly man if I ever heard of it. Personally, I would love a Springfield M1A1 while that assault weapon ban still remains sunsetted. We're talking .308 NATO rounds, which are somewhat ubiquitous.
As far as handguns are concerned, I am preferential to .40 S & W rounds--Beretta 96. However, in your situation a 9mm Beretta 92 would be a good, solid choice. Furthermore, the 92 is also issued to the U.S. military.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to buy either in New York.

Most shots on deer are pretty close. I can see where out west or in the plains a rifle would be preferable. I use both depending on which stand I go to the day I hunt. I killed one of my best deer with a .410 slug, from about 30 feet away.
Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.
