I believe
You can get pop with real sugar just about anywhere outside the U,S. The reason is everyone's favorite imperial government has high tariffs on imported sugar, with the result that manufacturers find it more economical to use high-fructose ass syrup than pay the artificially higher domestic price for sugar.

All those years...
...Diet soda and plenty of Crystal Light, too, like sunshine in the comment below.
I don't hardly drink soda at all anymore. Mostly juice, water, milk.
After seeing Donald Rumsfeld's name connected with aspartame, I wouldn't care if someone said it was the cure for the common cold. I'm not touchin' it anymore.
Funny though, I thought I was doing a good thing all those years.
I guess the joke was on me, right Rumsfeld?

recovering pop-aholic
I used to drink 6 cans per day of diet pop. I read somewhere that nutrasweet affects short-term memory and I wondered about this because of the programming I was doing at the time and how I kept needing to scroll back up to the top of my programs to remind myself of the names I had used for my variables. First I switched to sugar pop but immediately dropped to 3 cans per day out of fear of diabetes and weight gain. I initially got migraine headaches and used Tylenol to manage the couple days it took to adjust to the caffeine withdrawal. At least I assume that was the cause. I eventually got down to 1/2 can per day which I actually kept up for probably 8 years. One day I finally dropped that and switched to drinking Lipton tea. I missed the cold, bubbly sweetness but liked the 5 cents per tea bag. Now I drink Organic Peppermint tea. It almost totally knocks out the tiredness I often feel after lunch, sometimes after breakfast. I do buy a regular pop now and then. Once I do, I really crave another one the following day. Having a tea takes away the craving if I give it a chance.
Wow, 6 cans per day. Good for you for breaking away.
I wish I could acquire the taste for tea. Many of the flavors sound good. Peppermint tea sounds delicious...it's just that tea part I struggle with, heh.
I had a few instances of temporary blind spots. Never made a connection at all with the diet soda.
About the time I started reading about aspartame, a coworker and I were talking and she mentioned that very same thing about the blind spots, not knowing that it had happened to me.
It happened a few times. If you've ever had it happen, it is quite startling. Glad it never happened while I was driving.
It hasn't happened in years. I haven't drank things with nutrasweet in years.
I might have to break down and try some of that peppermint tea.
In the meantime, mint ice cream is calling me from the kitchen... :)
since early 80,s......Thank you for diggs!
when a child living under communism in Poland I knew not to drink pop.........anyone wants to commit suicide drink popular drinks.

Yes, it is nasty stuff!
I hate that I ingested the stuff for so long. I started drinking Crystal Light in Junior High and drank Diet Coke up until about 7-8 years ago. But then I thought it was healthier to drink regular Coke so drank that for a while until I learned how awful HFCS is. Now I just drink water. (and beer and wine of course).
(and beer and wine of course).
Thank heavens, Sunhine, I was a bit worried there for a while. Red wine is the very best for you and drink "heavy" beers....
My early poision was diet-pepsi and diet-DP...yikes, not good.

What is HFCS?
Just wondering-recently stopped aspartame myself
HFCS
High Fructose Corn Syrup
Ah Thanks I heard the tiny cans of soda produced
largely for the Hispanic market are still made from good ole fashioned cane sugar?
Coke with sugar
I don't know about tiny cans, but
a Mexican restaurant by me sells Coke in glass bottles...
They are made with sugar (not high fructose corn syrup).
I'm not familiar with those
but you can find soda made with cane sugar at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's I think but they are expensive. I treat myself and buy them once in a while.
